And that's why you never intentionally walk anyone before Ortiz.

I will never complain about a team intentionally walking someone because they would rather face David Ortiz.

Oritz did not start toward first until the ball landed in the bullpen. He is so going to get drilled at some point. I think people just kind of expect it from him now.

I get all that, and in general I tend to agree with it. But beyond the stats and his projections, BBIP not withstanding, I just don't believe he will do better. I've seen nothing in his recent performances to tell me he's getting on track or working his way back toward his mean or median production rates. If anything I've seen a guy more often than not who appears lost at the plate. Which is exactly why I don't want him to get any extra at bats by hitting second. If anything I'd move Pedroia to the 2, move everyone up one and drop Gomes to 8 or 9. ADDED: I hope I'm wrong, that I've been "seeing" all the wrong things in his at bats and he goes 4-4 tonight with 2 jacks, a double and a walk. FURTHER ADDED: I curse whomever invented iPhone autocorrection and vow to banish it. Awesome blast by Papi!! And yeah, I was wrong about Gomes tonight. He failed to. get the two Jacks. jk. Then again Then again Iglesias had 3 BB so it could've just been outlier aberrant sample bobble head night.

Jason Mastrodonato ?@jmastrodonato 17m Washington: "If Ortiz beat us I could live with that. If Pedroia beat us I couldn't have lived with that."

June --unlike May-- is tough and the series win gets things started well even with the inj's
Ortiz just seems to have learned so much in the last two seasons (no PED jokes please) even the lhp didn't seem to cause him much concern. He seemed to know the release point and was dead on that pitch all the way.

And that's why you never intentionally walk anyone before Ortiz. More importantly, you don't have a guy with an ERA of about 7.00 intentionally walk someone to pitch to Ortiz in the ninth inning of a tie game when you have Joe Nathan sitting in the bullpen.

But Kirkman is a lefty, Ortiz is a lefty... One the other hand, Nathan is the closer and it was not a save situation. Obviously, walking Pedroia and having a lefty pitch to Ortiz was the correct tactical decision...

I'm putting in a right-handed batter." "Pinch-hitting for me?" "Yes. You're a left-hander and so is the pitcher. If I send up a right-handed batter it's called playing the percentages. It's what smart managers do to win ball games." "I've got nine home runs." "You should be very proud. Sit down. Simpson! You're batting for Strawberry."
