We seem to be looking for the next great Italian ballplayer with Benintendi and Rusconi. Don't forget this guy Darn.....I did forget him. Hoping for someone named Guido next from Sicily.

Good for Pat Light. Hopefully he keeps dominating at AAA and we may well have another power arm in our pen by the end of the year. Exactly what I'm thinking/hoping for! Hopefully his stuff is still dominating in Pawtucket and we give him a chance in August.

VERY pleased with Benintendi as our pick. Lots of tools, only 20, potential power, and runs well. The only outfielder I liked somewhat better was Tucker. We certainly could use another good prospect in the outfield. After Margot it is a lot of unknowns. Wouldn't be surprised if he is ready in 2 to 3 years. I mentioned earlier about a Jim Edmonds comp. The only downsize for me is he probably can add another solid 10 lbs of muscle, but no more. He is close to being maxed out. Love the swing and love the glove.

Where is he going to get better coaching and thus better development, the DSL or the GCL? I think you have a point there.....also better facilities. If he is dominating the DSL, why not start getting him acclimated to baseball in the USA right now. His career is going to be here eventually. If he isn't challenged after another month, why not make the move (so I can watch him) ?

What became of the competitive balance pick the Sox got from the A's? Sandoval ate it. Love It!! That explains the range.

I for one will be watching the draft.....but also keeping my eye on Brian Johnson's start at the same time. It is nice to see our staff become somewhat stabilized, but Johnson is real close to competing for a spot in our rotation.

I'd prefer one of the top 3 college pitchers, Tucker, or Aiken depending on his medicals. There's no chance Rodgers or Swanson get to us and a sliver of a chance Bregman is there. Like your thinking! Tucker and Aiken (if OK medical) have some great upside. Hope they don't just take someone to re-allocate money later. This draft is not that strong or deep.

Figuring Rodgers and Swanson are gone before we pick, this is my favorites for the Sox at #7: 1) Tucker 2) Benintendi 3) Fulmer 4) Tate 5) Aiken 6) Allard 7) Bregman Tucker has as good upside as anyone in the draft, and I can't shake Brady Aiken as an under-slot signing

I think it is definitely Andrew Benantanendi. Nice job on the draft podcast Chris and Ian. Informative for us guys that might not follow this stuff as much. Thanks. I have, over the last 2 days, come over to choosing Benindenti. We really could use a young lefty outfielder in the system with some potential power. He seems to have few weaknesses and he looks like someone who could not only stay in center, but be above average. I've been searching all my life for the next Freddy Lynn. I know.....it is big reach, but the way he plays center reminds me somewhat of a Jim Edmonds (or a Lynn). Not sure if his power is for real, but he does have a great swing. I acknowledge you never pick for need, especially in the 1st several rounds.....but he could be just about ready when the next great Sox team is mature and ready to take off. I could see Betts in right in this scenario. Anyway, the way it seems to be playing out, Andrew Benindenti could be a real nice get for us.

I'm as excited as everyone else about Monday. I have a serious question. Why is Bregman so intriguing to so many? I want to "jump on" the wagon, but I really see a decent 2nd baseman....and not much more. Is it because the draft is poor and he looks like a surer thing? Not trying to be negative, I just want to hear reasons for me to be excited about him. I'm from New Mexico so I was already on board with Bregman, but this article from the Hardball Times sold me on him being a very good pick at 7. That was outstanding!! Thanks so much. As an ex-math major, I feel much better about the choice.

Looking forward to seeing what Alejandro De Aza will do tonight. I thought last year when we played the O's he was one tough out. Here's to him.......being one tough out!!

I was looking at baseball america's top 10 prospects for the sox and as of today 5 of the top ten are playing in Boston. It will be 6 when the sox bring up Brian Johnson. You know Larry I was thinking about the make-up the team last night, and what needs to be understood and played-up is that we have SIX YOUNG-INS on the team currently trying to establish their careers. That is a lot! ERod, Mookie, Xander, Swihart, Barnes, and Rusney. I love these "kids" but it does play with consistency somewhat. But to be honest, I want another (Brian Johnson) to be added over the next month or two into the rotation. These players are our future. And let me take the time to do some dreaming. Four of those guys (in the best scenario) may be the equivalent of the Yankee's BIG 4 starting in the late 90's. Oh please make it so!! Xander is our Jeter. Betts is our Bernie Williams. Swihart is our Jorge. And Eduardo Rodriguez is our Andy Petitte. Now if we can just find our Mariano! Wouldn't be sweet if this group had the success of the MFY group? Oh well, a fellow can dream.....especially when the parent club sort of sucks right now.

I think it's insane that someone with his lack of size could sit mid 90s at 17 years old. It's a natural reaction to underestimate what's called intra-species variability for both plants and animals. Turns out the gene pool for most organisms is deep and wide. Here's one example. In forest stands here in the West, trees that are of the same species will react quite differently to drought stress and insect predation. Some try to grow their way through it, other genotypes place their resource bets into root development after spring growth, with subsequent defoliation. That probably reflects what has been a lot of evolutionary pressure due to climatic variability since the end of the last glaciation, 50,000 years ago. It's no different for animals, with wide variations in size, shape, musculature, lung capacity, and on and on... One of my earliest baseball memories, when I was barely in grade school, was of this guy from the great White Sox team of the late 50s. By modern standards, he wouldn't have been let near a starting rotation. That would have been a mistake. The issue for Espinoza will revolve around his durability, and his ability to keep his stuff deep into games. But there's no question that even compact pitchers can carry the water if they've got the stuff. The "Go Go Sox" were probably my earliest recollection also. The World Series between the Bums and the White Sox is still a positive memory. Early Wynn, Nellie Fox, and my favorite player for quite a while.....Luis Aparicio. Miinie Minoso was on that team if I remember. Yeah Billy was a very good little lefty.

Love to get a chance to see him in Fort Myers this summer. I was surprised somewhat when they brought up a 17 year old kid last year at mid-season from the DL to the GCL. I think is name is Devers. Not sure how often they promoted from one to the other in past seasons. Basabe was another. Would be interesting.

He is obviously struggling in Greenville. He has struck out 57 of 150 at bats. I think we should consider moving him down to Lowell where he will be playing against guys his own age. Agreed, but mostly for him to have the opportunity to play everyday at 3rd. He really does have great bat speed, but being in the line-up 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 days is not helping him get his timing down. He struggled some last year in the GCL, but he is a smart kid and a hard worker who made the adjustments so he had a very good 2nd half. He needs at bats....consistent at bats. With Devers in Greenville, he wouldn't get that opportunity.

I'm planning g a trip to be in Greenville for two games weekend after next. Second visit to that beautiful city and to Flour Field. Also will swing by Salem to catch a game and wind up in Charlotte to see the PawSox vs Charlotte Knights at the new downtown stadium. My son lives in Charlotte and is a big a Sox fan as I. That does sound great! Flour Field is a great place to watch a game. I still haven't had the opportunity of seeing the new ball park in Charlotte. My ex-partner tells me it is beautiful, and I can see by photos it is a humdinger (is that still a word?). I was planning on doing it this summer, but with my wife doing chemo....it will have to wait. No traveling for us until her immune system improves. That backdrop in Charlotte is gorgeous. Have a wonderful time.
