There's nothing crueler in baseball than the line-drive double play. The non-assisted triple play maybe?

You lost me... Every single other bench player played extensively at 1st last year. I lost you.
1. In prior years, if Salty were catching and Ross the only guy on the bench ... an unexpected injury would bring Ross into the game and move Salty to 1B. 2. If Leon is the only guy on the bench, and he comes in for the injured player ... now they've got 2 catchers in the field and both are "catcher only." 3. I suppose Ortiz is normally DH and he goes to 1B if there is an injury and Napoli moves somewhere else. 4. Often, a catcher would pinch-hit for Ortiz in a blowout. But if Leon does that and he cannot play a position, you need somebody else available on the bench. Bottom line, this roster is not ideal for an empty bench scenario.
Maybe this is meaningless because Hanigan could play 1B in a blowout game for a couple of innings. He's not a cripple.
Isn't the nice thing about blowouts that it is very unlikely a scenario like that is about to hurt you?

Have been reading this debate for a while now. Aside from the fact that both of you make convincing claims, I have to disagree with the final statement of you, moonstone. Eric may be the most optimistic about wright (although mgoetze might like to have a word with you about that assumption), but he is by no means the only one who sees potential.
I think we should at least try him out as long as he's having success. Given gis sss stats in the majors, so far he seems to be doing just fine, doesn't he?

I'm so bleeping done with the Hamels talk. At this point I hope they trade for him just to make it stop. This. Words can't describe how sick I am of hearing about Hamels, the Phillies, and everything to do with them. Really? I almost completely ignored it from the beginning and will continue to do so as long as our best prospects are involved. And that includes Owens for me, as I think that he can be a Hamels pitcher as early as late 2015 without costing nearly as much.

Might that be a potential factor (one of more obviously, not the sole explanation) for the struggles of Xander and JBJ?

Well, if we think of the range of possible performance as a normal distribution, which I think we probably should, a pitcher with a higher median projection should also have a higher floor (i.e., a high chance of being a serviceable starting pitcher). It seems like you're implying that Weiland and Owens would have the same bust rate, which I don't think is true. If the pitcher with the better projection doesn't meet his expectations, he might still be a fine back-end starter. If the pitcher who projects to be a back-end starter doesn't meet his expectations, he's a sub-replacement-level scrub. [ The ultimate floor of a prospect especially a pitcher is always overestimated. The game of baseball is so competitive from both a mental and physical standpoint that it mandates that many talented pitchers will fail. In short there is no floor for a pitching prospect. They all have a material and under appreciated chance of failure. I don't think that the bust rate is equal for every pitcher but it's a lot closer than you think it is. Further, it's not just the ultimate bust rate that should be considered but the initial bust rate. A more talented pitcher like Owens maybe more likely to recover from a bad start, to have a good career, but that won't help in September. Regardless of what SP thought of Weiland at the time there were plenty of people who thought he could start in the majors. There was no indication that he would completely collapse as he did. To say that can't possibly happen to Henry Owens or Edwin Rodriguez is naieve. That's why it's silly to project a rotation with Wright, Rodriguez, and Owens. They aren't going to put a rotation out there full of inexperienced pitchers no matter how good they are assuming they are in a pennant race. They will make a trade for a veteran starter. Young pitching breaks your heart. That's always been true. Counterargument: Cardinals 2013?

If I remember right, he gave uo some Homeruns and therefore inflated the ERA a little bit. Aside from those he had good periphals if I recall right. It will be interesting to see if the Homeruns were an aberration or become a pattern...

Let's wait for spring training games before we pencil in where we put each player. That goes to you, too, Mr. Farrell... Uhm... why? It's not like spring training performance translates well to regular season performance. You're totally right. But to debate about that now seems like it's even more hilarious/stupid...

65: Eduardo Rodriguez: Smooth, repeatable delivery, but inconsistent with command and velocity. Mid-rotation ceiling. 90: Rafael Devers: Physically maxed out and needs to improve defense at third. But the bat has the potential to be good enough to provide elite value even with no defensive contribution. It's ok to be disappointed with the Owens rating, but it's important to note that the BPro team has certainly seen him more than the staffs of any other national publication. So "I disagree" is fair, but "they don't know what they are talking about" is whining. I'm much more disappointed with the Erod ranking, as the bp staff has been sceptical about Owens ceiling for a long time now. I still disagree but it's as you wrote. What I don't understand: how can our young Devers already be 'physically maxed out'?? I mean he's one of our youngest prospects???
