Idk, I see guys challenging the follow through, and even the footwork. Even starring right now for the Bosox we have guys who finish every pitch with a "pull of the cord from the ground", and it works! Can you believe it?! I can. Fernando Rodney has done it, in a much more exaggerated and painful-looking way, for like two decades and over 800 appearances. If Scherff had Rodney's career I'd be thrilled. But it is not ideal, especially for a starter. Tbh I thought the Bosox would turn Sherff into some sort of reliever with his lack of consistent pitches, and release point. I can believe it too. CS has changed the way I think about power pitching. Much like young skinny Pedro did. However ive been wrong plenty of times before. Just today Brian Johnson is sitting low 90s when before I said he was never to be better than a good AAA pitcher bc he topped out at 86. Sigh. Edit: Stanton would have caught that De Jesus HR. Hopefully that trend continues as NY continues to overrate Judges defense.

Is that what you'd call arm side run? I see his fastballs continually tailing towards the inside for RHH. It could also be a bit of the camera sitting on the left handed side of the box by just a bit. Very minor, but I think watching baseball on tv, and every angle exaggerates so much compared to sitting on the field, when its just kind of a quick "point a-point-b type thing" Im guessing even that is changed when guys consistently see +90 mph pitches.

I wish success for pretty much every guy. Here's to hoping he carries his success from college into his long professional career

Ppl here ar mentioning JDMs ability to take advantage of what they call a right field in Yankee Stadium. It seems as though the Red Sox hitters who had success and utilized it like David Ortiz or even Johnny Damon are few and far between. Of course I'm just picking the popular names off that list, and last year guys like Mitch Moreland and even AB we're the only guys who took consistent advantage. While I wasnt for JDs signing bc of the original dollar figures being thrown out, and mentions even on this site of getting rid of Jackie and moving JD into right field, I have to say I'm excited about his bat playing there. We all saw how he hit in Arizona lacing line drives all over the field. I was most impressed with how he was able to get fooled on breaking balls or high velocity, outside fastballs and line or flip them over the right field fence. Thin air or not. For him to produce the kind of Ops he did without taking walks and relying on slugging percentage was pretty impressive. Here's to hoping it's not a two-year 50 million dollar deal. If it isn't a 2 year 50 million dollar deal then that means he under performs or gets injured. Shouldn't we be rooting for him to mash and opt out? Then hopefully resign him because he likes it here and they have won a WS. I see where your head's at, but I don't wish injury on anybody. Except for LeBron James.

His fastball went significantly down from May 27th to July 18th and this ST it is still down from his May 27th outing? Or was his May 27th start and his July 18th start - both - there are stats showing he was ripped? I had earlier replied with the long post without checking at the numbers so I just deleted it and I'm retyping it now in a more condensed fashion. You brought up his complete game which I did not see so I can't comment really. Also brought up his last start which was average-ish with a lot of baserunners. I may have misplaced in my mind the early starts he had last year with the ones he had a couple years ago in regards to losing velocity. A guy with terrible numbers brought to below average with that complete game (which I give him credit for) combined with his low velocity I think is a bad combination for the Five Spot in our rotation. That was an extremely roundabout way through my three uninformed posts that Hector Velazquez better deserves that five Spot than Brian Johnson. And Elias may deserve a chance before BJ as well

Just a question, but I never see Jalen Beeks mentioned in any of the major baseball sites or Prospect lists. I realize he's 24 and just completed double A, but he's had a good couple years and he is a lefty, with good strikeout rates and apparently good stuff from what I read Is it only an age thing? I believe shohei Otani is 23. I've even seen and I believe it was on fangraphs, Brian Johnson rated ahead of beeks in regards to prospect status. I understand he has AAA and Major League experience but the stuff is obviously gone Southward and anything he throws near the plate gets hit a country mile. Edited for I R gud at grammar I have no idea who will breakout. But as far as Johnson, for a number 5 starter you think he stinks? I was thinking he can be a decent 5. I wouldn't call that "breakout." His starts didn't look too bad below, did they? What would you expect from a 5? And no one mentioned Elias. Is he "done?" www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=johnsbr02&t=p&year=2017 My opinion on BJ is based on his results before the velocity went down, and the results he got after when he made it through a ML lineup a couple times with only 2 or 3 runs- as opposed to what his blowups looked like. People sitting on the curve and slow cutters. Maybe it was just me but it felt like he was eeking through teams with lineouts and a well placed curveball. Also the control didn't seem to be there for a guy whose stuff looks like 30 yo Jamie Moyers. I do realize stuff isn't everything, but how many guys that are successful are like that? Buehrle (rarely walked people), Moyer I suppose. I liked BJ when he was 89 mph, I dont think he belongs in an AL East lineup at 83 mph cutters Elias could be a serious arm though, and with some SP success he could see 15 starts much like last year's Velasquez/Fister and to a lesser degree Kendrick. Hes proven at AAA and even in Seattle a bit. I like Elias too, hell for 5th spot guys I'm fine with a strike-thrower who doesn't rattle.

People are hating on Romanski, while working with the Potomac Nationals there was rampant use of some form of amphetamine or uppers or protein powder with that extra "kick". Didn't the baseball world let Votto and his apparent need for adderal slide? Adderal being amphetamine salts. Those are the ingredients? Edit: I don't mean to come off as crash, but after watching a couple documentaries including the no no on Doc, where players said upwards of 95% of guys were using some form of amphetamines and they believe it still goes on today. Some of those pirates are still involved in Major League teams in 2017/18 None of those players are getting suspended multiple times though. You do make a good point - Monster and Rockstar energy drinks are the unofficial official drink of minor league baseball - but the key point here is the multiple suspensions, and the comments above all relate to that, as I read them. Everyone that takes a drug, and knows they may be tested, also knows how to not fail a test, or pass. Personally I don't think Romanski was going to amount to much for the Sawx. But reading comments condemning him as some sort of druggie, doper, or otherwise standard language we the public use when we catch somebody and get to Point our finger and criticize.... it just made me cringe. I hate to say it, but do we really think Jake romanski, minor league catcher is the only guy in the entirety of baseball using amphetamines? Amphetamines that have been used widely for years upon decades? Smh. It reminds me of the people that still jump all over people for popping for weed. Of course one is a much more dangerous drug than the other, but the point still stands that they are still very common in regards to baseball. As far as getting caught, multiple suspensions, etc. I would think out of the hundreds of times he likely has used amphetamines he's been caught twice. That was my point is that in the grand scheme of things getting caught a couple times doesn't skim the surface of how much this stuff is actually being used. I could comment on college ball as well, but I wouldn't want to condemn my school or conference. Edit: I was referring to comments here and elsewhere that Ive read. I would venture to guess others have seen those types of things too where people pile on somebody who gets suspended a couple times

5 year 137 million dollar deal for Jimmy G. Wow. That's a ton for a guy with limited games under his belt. Well,- he was the first guy to shred apart the Jaguars defense with a bunch of limited receiving options mostly rookies Edit: I don't have the numbers for the Patriots game but Ramsey gave up 24 completions for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns, and boy they gave up 11 completions for a hundred and forty seven and one touchdown against the Steelers in the playoffs. Maybe Jimmy G gave guys the blueprint to hush up the Jags D

Please don't pile on me for this, but I am so giddy that no deal has been reached even though the current 5 for 125 is reasonable.
He wants to play an outfield position and take away from one of our strengths, and sure he'll hit 35 Plus home runs the first couple years while providing on-base percentage and other extra-base hits.( at 900k per HR) However, the player he was in Arizona, prime weathwr 365, during the fireworks show where the ball flew like Mickelson off the tee. Hitting in the same lineup as Goldschmidt and Lamb with a little bit of AJ Pollock.
Does any reasonable fan think he's a guy that's going to slug 690 for 5 years? Or even 600? I would venture it's between 490 and 530 declining as he gets towards 35. If you think about the hitters he's had around him the last 6 years, nobody in our lineup has that kind of power to protect him. We just aren't built like that, and lo and behold! We won the AL East!(with a hurt ace, a tired one, and losy to the eventual champions nonetheless)
Let somebody else pay him exorbitant amounts of money and let us look at more reasonable choices for power. Preferably not any represented by Scott boras.
Trader Dave has won me over by not falling for Mr. Boras' voodoo hypno- black magic where we all believe home runs are impossible to hit and he's got the only player with the ability to do so. Once again, I won't mention the writers names but I've seen a couple articles that had basically s**t on players we have since signed for arbitration. People wonder why guys don't want to come here. I know I'm biased, but an average offensive player with Premier defense gets basically no love and is in false trade rumors everyday with his name being dragged through the mud, all the while being paid peanuts and not complaining.
I went to class with Justin bour at Mason, I really love Mitch Moreland butt in another reality I wish we had gotten Justin.

Love the thread, however don't believe he'll be MVP next year or the year after likely.
He doesn't play a prime defensive position (hes not gold glove caliber anyway), and the offensive output although above-average isn't enough. In our awesome defensive outfield hed be the "weak link" with above-average defense of course
In his prime before his speed wanes, we can hope for 8-10 more homeruns, of course more doubles and his contact and walk profile suggest possibly 315 hitter. Soxprospects completely got it right when projecting him.
Now if he slashes 310/400/530 with bunches of doubles and triples while topping that arbitrary 30 HR mark and still nabbing 25 bases at a high clip maybe he gets consideration----
-----food for thought. Mike Trout broke his thumb and ended up with two thirds of a season and still hit 33 (28 doubles?)home runs and stole 22 bases closing in on 100 runs scored and RBIs in about 109 ganes. Posting his best walk rate ever. He became a better hitter after compromising his hand. There is no shame in finishing second to Mike Trout though during this hypothetical career year we hope for Beni.
I for one am perfectly happy with his projections on fangraphs, and of course the natural maturation process that will come with it, combined with better offensive production from the members of the lineup that were hurt or slumping.
I think him being left-handed with, ability to play all three Outfield positions, and speed is quite valuable to the Red Sox as he is.
Christian Vazquez for MVP!

Now that we know JD will hold out until the season thus creating an even bigger distance as far as camaraderie goes between him and his teammates included in his Primadonna actions. I suppose Neil Walker would be a good Lefty stopgap until Dustin is fully healthy
Sure JD will hit 35 next year and possibly the year after but the last couple years will be paying for basically Hanley Ramirez without the humor

First of all YAY on thornburh throwing since Oct 2nd. Also YAY on Erod throwing at 90 feet.
I'm looking at some comments claiming JDM would have the best offensive season ever, or the best defensive season he's ever had just based on Outfield dimensions. I think we need to take into account the different pitching style in the AL, and the different pitchers. As well as it's hot all the time in Arizona, and the balls fly like golf balls off aluminum bats all the time in Arizona. Somehow we forgotten his production in Detroit in the AL which yes, was quite productive but I would not say in the realm of best offensive output in the league by far. Age and playing in Boston might have something to do with it, but I'm not as optimistic as best offensive production of his career.
It seems like it's the same narrative as the Hosmer signing was heating up. These threads contained all of his positives and how much they could be better (reminds anyone of Pablo Sandoval eh)
Maybe it's just hard to convince this fan that inserting JDM into last year's lineup would have equalled World Series appearance.
Yes, we could have benefited from some more fly balls and homeruns. I just really hope this isn't the consensus among the people with money is signing JDM for 5 or 6 years at 25 per.
If he takes 20, maybe <20 million to agree and DH 75% of the time I'm all for it. There is a decent portion of the reason why our pitching has looked good at times, and that's the Outfield defense and to an extent the infield defense. Man it would be nice if the Brass recognized why guys like Porcello had a career year and sale as well at some points. As well as the bullpen with names that aren't top tier having great years. I suppose Vasquez and his framing has something to do with it, but so does our Outfield catching all manner of flying things which tend to end up being extra-base hits.
Edit: I hope this doesn't come across as hating on JDM the player as much as gratitude for the club that got us to the postseason last year

When it comes to J D Martinez sometimes I look back on the 04 and 07 teams and their success, and think people think the answer is just power no matter the cost, or ramifications in the field.
There's a reason we won so many games last year, there's a reason we won the division title.
I think you can chalk that up to young position players playing great defense and dominant pitching from a couple guys.
As somebody who watched JD Martinez hit laser beams 330 ft to right field every other day in Arizona, I can also tell you he did his fair share of banana routes, missing cut off men, and overall moping around back to the Dugout whenever he didn't run a ball out or hit pop flies.
I love how the Boston media wants a guy so badly, and then when they get him, within games they start judging his character because he didn't Sprint on a 12 Hopper to shortstop in late April.
So hopefully when the market dissolves, he settles for the hundred million at DH, because otherwise I'm vote to bring back in Kevin Millar to patrol our Outfield

Whew, six years JDM at 180 million total?. So soon after the Hanley signing(and his incredible last healthy year in LA) and Pablo (after actually hitting)?
Not so sure if DD should break up the band and stick JD out there on this one. Can we hope he brings the Arizona climate to Boston with him, and doesn't turn into the guy he was in Detroit for 30 per with even worse defense?
I understand there is a need for power. I really don't understand some fans want for the guy, for anything over 4 maybe 5 years at anything over 20 a year. We all understand Boras is throwing out the ceiling, even me. I'd need a little more than some good offensive production in Detroit and one amazing half in AZ to make that commitment, but my name isnt trader Dave for nothing.
Anyways, here's to hoping we find a good lefty for the bullpen. One that isnt David Price (although it really was encouraging to see him so dominant in that role when we needed it the most).

I would say that the premium defensive positions, especially when averaging around 1.8 chances a game, it really is about half the game. Ive heard the argument that its pitching AND defense. Ive heard that one can go all nine innings without seeing the ball hit to him (at any position let alone a tough Fenway CF). We also know you can go 0-4 flailing terribly, and make one spectacular, or just plain clutch, catch/throw to change/impact/save/end a game. I know you aren't arguing that it isn't half the game, but players like Jackie Bradley sure as heck make it feel like that at times. Whether it be for better or for worse. you must have an odd definition of the word “half” Like I said in the point. It's somewhere between "eh not really" and "about half". But hey you're right, next time ill include decimal points and a pie chart including wind factors.

This seems precisely designed not to make the Sandoval/Ramirez mistake of overpaying players who are not really good but simply the best when the music stops in the offseason. Sox’s need of 1B doesn’t mean they have to pay the best free agent as if he is a great option (as they did with Pablo). I say sign JD (maybe), wait until next offseason for a prize (*cough* Harper *cough*). Ill just say this. Watching Bryce on Masn everyday for the last 5 years hasnt shown him to me, to be a 40 mil a year guy. That is just my opinion. I understand that swing can hypnotize people. The screaming at umpires for calls (that dont appear to be bad) and pulling a hammy or two every year. If the goal is to get th offense, id say just break the bank for Trout in a couple years.

We know that his wife consented within a day to the fact that he did not "lift a hand" towards her. I'm not sure we do know that. The statement was provided by Wright's lawyer and attributed to and phrased to read like it came from "the Wright family," but it's unclear whether his wife (or other members of his family) had a meaningful, uncoerced opportunity to review and sign off on that statement. Again, I'd ask that folks refrain from speculation on this specific incident or discussion of domestic violence issues more broadly. This is a very sensitive issue for folks and I'd like to steer clear of topics including, but not limited to, what constitutes domestic violence and what victims of domestic violence should or should not do in the aftermath thereof. If you feel the need to discuss such topics, the throwdown subforum is a few forums down. Thanks. Im a big fan of yours and totally understand why you asked what you have asked here. It probably doesn't belong in this forum, apart from what may happen with his ML/MILB career with the Sawx. It just seems like refraining from discussing the topic and the consequences of life before/after an accusation is counterproductive. However, I hope that did not come across as telling you how to run the site etc. or approaching the situation in a broad fashion like you have asked we not. Just a thought. Anyways, in Winthrop to see family, glad to be back. Happy Holidays!

Yay!!! I might have come off a little rude to people begging to fork over 200 mil to Eric Hosmer bc he had a career year and is Jeter-esque overrated on defense. Mitch again, played gold glove defense with average offense from the left side with broken bones in his foot. And we're getting these things for about 16 million less a year than would be for Hosmer.
Now comes the unfortunate period where im wondering if we jeapordize having elite day in, day out defense with offensive surges in Center from JBJ for 2 years of JDM being worth his money.

He shouldn't have yelled with her. Jail, everytime. Especially if there was any attempt for him to disconnect a 9-11 call
Once she says she's calling 9-11 Steve all you can do is lock yourself in a room, and call your lawyer until the police get there

In that same Fangraphs article someone actually said Jackies defense is already declining, and he cant hit anyway. Do they expect 2011 Jacoby Ellsbury every year? Or can they just appreciate a cost controlled incredible Defender for the next 3 years minimum. I really wish MLB Network would stop having the Nick cafardo on to give the baseball community "legit" Bosox news
