The Sox currently have a HR/FB of 3.8% Last year the lowest value was 8.8% by the Giants. Going back 10 years the worst was the 2009 Mets with 6.3%
This team will hit more homers. It's pretty much impossible to run that HR/FB rate for a full season The worst teams in the past 10 years hit them about 2x more frequently than the Sox right now

You would like the Sox to lay of when he's pounding the strike zone all game? He was in his last inning! Not as much earlier. Anyway im not happy with the way this offense is loooking. They got 8 runs on Baltimore but their defense wss terrible. Eh they've been missing a bunch of people and Mookie hasn't started hitting yet. They've also faced a lot of good starting pitching so far (besides the O's guys) The offense will be fine.

Basically everyone except Moreland, Leon and Vazquez is hitting much worse right now than they will be the rest of the season. Should be more 5+ run games coming up.

Okay I'll start the kvetching. The Red Sox traded at least 40 top-100 prospects this offseason to produce a team that has Mitch Moreland batting fifth on opening day. Commence. Or perhaps the problem is that the worst or 2nd worst hitter in the lineup is hitting 5th. It's been done! A JF complaint before the season has even started! lol

Conditional Extensions: Exum(5) - 4yrs/$64Mn but no extension if George Hill stays. Yikes. I know there's a lot more money in the sport and the dude's got potential, but he plays 18 minutes a game as a 3rd year player coming off an injury year. Then again I almost never watch Jazz games so I don't know if he's actually good. As a whole, I don't think they can really go wrong here. This team has a legit chance of getting to the finals (Cavs implosion / injury...) and is guaranteed one of: Fultz, Ball, Jackson or Tatum and that's my order right now. I feel like Fultz is getting underrated cause he gets dumped on for being on a terrible team (maybe not here but elsewhere), but I just watched this and I'm convinced he's an incredible offensive player: I know this is a highlight video, but it seems like there's a defender literally in his face on like 80% of his shots, yet he's still efficient. He's got range and can get to the rim and finish. I think he'd be a perfect player to run the dribble hand-off play they run for Avery all the time.

I think the Bullpen is an issue all year. I think Thornburg is a bust due to injury & he doesn't make it through June. I think Rutledge is returned to Colorado. I think Swihart & Travis are both on the team by the all star break. I think Moreland is a bust. Honestly all of these things could happen and they could still win the division. In other news, Benintendi looks pretty big now. Anyone else think 20 HRs is a realistic possibility out of him?

Pretty sure I said the same thing you did other than trading Smart for Noels and then picking another guard at the top of the draft. Yeah I agree with what you said other than the Noel trade. But I was more commenting on the "Noels" spelling after the Cousin's debacle lol

Not sure if this was on purpose or not but either way it's hilarious with the way this thread has been going lol. With the C's and Raptors upcoming schedules Boston could be playing for the 2 spot in the east on Tuesday. That considered I think as currently constructed the Celtics and Raptors will be pretty close for the 2/3 all season. This would put them in a good place to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. With the Korver trade, there's basically nothing that will stop the Cavs from winning that series outside of injury. I think if Danny sees a chance to make cheap upgrades to the roster he will do so. But, I don't think there's any one player they could acquire this season that would make them the favorite in a series with the Cavs especially since they will likely have to give up players that are currently contributing to the team (Smart, Bradley, Crowder...). So, I think they should stand pat, wait for the offseason and make the pick. From there Danny and Brad can assess what they have in that player. Plus, the value of those picks always increases around the time of the draft. All that being said the team is in a great position. Overall they're a good team with a pretty young, cheap core and a very high likelihood of the 1 or 2 pick in the draft. That's amazing. If I'm one of those guys at the top of the draft I hope the Celtics pick me cause otherwise the teams are dumpster fires.

What I don't get is why people act sure that his weight and performance are even correlated. He never played markedly better after weight loss, however temporary. There's a very real chance he's just not good at baseball anymore. I don't think it's necessarily the weight loss itself that correlates with performance, but rather the dedication, work ethic and practice that comes with it. If he comes in again huge, do you have much confidence that he's ready to hit and field at a high level? Then again, he supposedly works out like crazy but just can't control his eating. So maybe I don't know what I'm talking about lol

My thoughts so far from preseason: - Horford is a really good all-around player and fits very well with the team
- Avery seems to be getting better every year
- At times Marcus Smart can just take over defensively
- Rozier looks great and can actually shoot
- Brown is more NBA ready than I thought; attacks the rim like crazy and gets to the line
- The Nets suck

Overall it was a fun season with spots of frustration. It's just too bad the end was one of those times. Plenty of good young players looking forward to next year, and hopefully this totally new, never seen before phrase isn't true: This team is nothing without Big Papi

I pray that someone from the F.O. explains to JF that fixing the R/L imbalance in the lineup by hitting Holt 2nd literally makes as much sense as doing so by hitting Ortiz 9th. The analytic Internet will explode in deserved mockery if the manager of one of the two best offenses of the last 20 or so years bats the team's one below-average hitter in the spot where the best hitter is supposed to hit. Pedroia Betts Ortiz Ramirez Benintendi / Bogaerts (vs L) Bogaerts / Young (vs L) Bradley Catcher Holt / Shaw Or you could put Bogaerts back to 2 and have Benintendi / Bradley 6 & 7. If they bring in a LHR for Benny, they get Young. I like that lineup a lot actually. If JF insists on putting a lefty in that 2 spot why not JBJ or Benintendi? Even though I like Brock a lot, they're just better hitters than him and you can't really debate it. They are also good baserunners so it's not like you can make that argument for Holt either.

He'll probably walk more, for one. Add 50 points of OBP and he looks a lot like a poor man's Mike Trout. 50 more point of OBP and he literally is Mike Trout. That would give him (of course walking more would mess with his BA and SLG, but for purposes of my argument: .311/.402/.540 And Mike Trout's career line: .306/.403/.559 Honestly that top line with 30 homers and 23 SBs is pretty much what you expect from Trout and Mookie's better defensively Edit: If you were to double Mookie's walk rate, at this point he would have 82 BBs, and we have 41 PAs of normal production replaced by walks. If we take those 41 PAs of average production it's about 8 singles, 3 doubles and 2 HR. Subtracting the 41 PA, 8 singles, 3 doubles and 2 HR, while adding 41 BBs gives him a final line of: .311/.405/.540

CY has been pretty good this year when healthy, and is apparently a great clubhouse guy. When Benintendi's back he'll be a great 4th LF to spell both AB and JBJ, and he shouldn't need to play CF either.

Please Sox, sit Xander for the final game of the series. Give him a full couple days off before the final sprint. He SO looks like he needs it. I think Bogaerts needs more than rest. His swing needs work. His follow through is awkward and it seems like his bat has way too much whip coming through the zone. He taps into very little of his raw power. It's a project for the offseason. I don't know that may be part of the problem. It also seems like he's checking his swing on like 50% of pitches. I know this is usually a joke but, does he need contacts or something?

Face it, folks, this bullpen is terrible. The question is, if the Sox don't score in the 8th, do you leave Tarawa in for the 9th? I ask because they have already used Ross, Barnes, Abad, and Tarawa. Buchholz is gassed and should not be available today. Ziegler is sick. That leaves Kimbrel and the only pen pitcher left standing. In a tie ballgame you have to think differently. The Sox need to score this half inning in the WORST way. If Tazawa faces Longoria I might die They should bring in Kimbrel anyway, and if they don't score here they get a second chance in the bottom of the 9th
