But I don't see 266 HRs. Probably 200 - 215 might be a more realistic projection. They were on pace for 219 last season and hit 245 in 2019. Given the additions to the roster, I think they'll be a lot closer to 266 than 215. How about 1 HR

It won't be long until Houck has Perez/Pivetta's rotation spot. He's just better than them. I’ll be quite content if Perez starts 30 games as the 5th starter. Unlike last year when he was 1/2 all year. The Sox finally (looks like at least) have some SP depth. It has been a while.

Your starters will be 70-51 with every ERA under 5.00. I hope this indeed happens! 266 HRs would be a dream come true. I hope you are correct on your predictions! More important than the HRs is the 90-95 wins this would result in. GOOOO SOXXXX

I’d much rather not have a high pick. That is probably a sign that a lot of things went wrong. Sure the pick is nice but not compared to sucking. There is no dout that this team has a lot of questions, and players that could go either way. Odds are some will work out, others will not and we will be right around .500. The bigger question will be if the FO become sellers or buyers.

Is there any rational justification for Brewer to make the roster? His phenomenal spin rate has never translated into the ability to be a reliable pitcher. Time to end the experiment. Right now he and Valdez are the 8th and 9th guys out of the pen. It would be nice to fill those spots with guys who are actually good, and right now it's unclear whether either one is. But they will pitch almost exclusively in low leverage.
Once Barnes comes off the C19 list, Brewer could take the last spot just because he can give you three crappy innings with the team down 5 runs, rather than just two. But they'll get a look at both of them in circumstances that count.
If they decide they need a good 13th pitcher, they have Houck. And should Brewer earn the DFA many of us have been lobbying for, there's Walden, who actually breezed through his last few appearances, and has an option left. Bazardo could get a shot as well.
When you include Brasier, Barnes, and Houck, they do have 15 guys who are legit, and Sale will make it 16. It's unreasonable to expect a team to have guys that are not iffy once you get to pitchers 17 and 18 on the depth chart.
For the most part last year had 4. Evo perez Barnes and workman. And I would t call any of those guys tier 1 I also wouldn’t discount other pitchers emerging at some point. Most likely seabold or Ward

How many players who had contact will be out (for at least ST) games? I was just thinking the same thing. Bad timing as well they start the season with a pretty favorable schedule for April. Hopefully its not too many BP arms, there going to need alot of innings out of them this season. Matt Andreise for one. 7 inning game with Politi starting and still in. This could be very bad. Hopefully by Thursday it’s figured out. On the good side Barnes is asymtomatic so hopefully he is not held up to much

View AttachmentThe above is one of the most interesting parts of the spring training game notes. Seeing where guys have played, and how much, can tell us some of the club's thoughts, I think. In no particular order: - Dalbec has gotten a lot of run at 3B, and nearly nobody else has. I think he's the backup 3B, with either Chavis or Gonzalez serving as Devers' actual backup in that they'd play first while Dalbec moves over. I think it's smart not to take that position out of his toolbox yet. - I am not surprised to hear the comments about Arroyo - they are clearly auditioning him to back up short based on IP there. - Kiké Hernandez has only played up the middle still. Looks like they're likely to use him primarily in CF and 2B (I can't see him at SS). - Marwin Gonzalez has played no 3B or CF, but everywhere else. I think he's going to be more of a true utility guy than Hernandez, which makes sense given that one will be starting and the other in a truer bench role. The lack of a true backup SS is still striking. If something were to happen to Bogaerts more than a month in, I think they'd think very hard about just giving Downs a shot unless he's struggling at the ATS/in AAA. I also think they'll have their eyes out for SS's coming available now with cuts, etc., but again, that player would be taking Arroyo's roster spot, which again explains why seeing if he can play short in a backup capacity makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't they look more at Arauz if X were to miss a month? I would think they'd let Downs continue his development as a 2b? Isn't Arauz a better defensive SS anyways? Xander has been as durable as anybody in baseball and is 28 years old. Have to plan on him being out there 150 times. I agree Arauz is probably added if X to miss more than a couple days.

I am among those who do not worry about one game performances. But my worry antenna is beginning to act up over poor games from three of our five likely starting pitchers this week. We have just lived through a year in which the Sox trailed early in games so it is not surprising that the most recent outings of Eovaldi, Perez and Pivetta bring back unhappy memories. I was thinking the same thing. Add Richards in there aswell

I hope the FO finally takes a chance and commits to a guy early. Would Erod take 4/90 right now?? I have this feeling he is going to be a top 5 pitcher this year.

I really would like Kiki in CF, Verdugo in RF and Arroyo at 2nd base.Renfroe is a 1 year rental he shouldn’t be taking time from anyone. Just fill in when he’s needed. If Arroyo busts then move Kiki to 2nd but Arroyo has way more potential then Renfroe. I don't know if I'd go that far. Arroyo could blossom into an everyday 2b with some pop, but the odds are against it. Renfroe, if he could hold his own against righties, would be a guy capable of whacking 35 or more homers while playing solid defense, so I don't know that Arroyo's ceiling is much higher. That said, I don't expect Renfroe to hold his own against righties either. Most likely at some point during the season Renfroe will probably be relegated to being the short end of a platoon and most likely Arroyo winds up with a tenuous hold on a roster spot. I would guess at some point in the second half that Cora is platooning two of the outfield spots. I can see an outfield alignment of Cordero/Duran/Verdugo against righties and an outfield alignment of Renfroe/Hernandez/Verdugo against lefties. In the latter scenario, Arroyo could get some action at 2b. I would anticipate Hernandez would get the majority of the action against righties at 2b, but then again if Arroyo plays better than expected he could cut into some of that time and maintain that if Hernandez winds up being needed more for CF than 2b, especially if Duran's defense takes awhile and his bat doesn't light up AAA pitching. And like I said, there's also the possibility of Renfroe getting regular ABs and getting to earn more time against righties, although he doesn't have the track record to maintain that. And at some point Santana probably factors in somewhere and the Sox are going to get Marwin Gonzalez some ABs (I can see him starting out the season in LF and being the primary backup to Dalbec and getting some time at 2b as well. It'll be interesting to see how Cora balances playing time and who earns more time. There are a lot of potential moving parts and possibilities. Of those I don’t see to many that have Arroyo having much success. It is possible, but a very big question. Less of a question but still a question is Renfroe. This is not a rental. Still has 2 years of service. He ha averaged close to 30 HRs a year. Much greater chance of success than Arroyo.

If Arroyo is cut, which I think is a real possibility, who gets the majority of reps at 2B. The choices are Hernandez, Gonzalez, Chavis, (to a lesser degree Arauz and Munoz). Does Santana play much if any 2B? KIKI is going to be the everyday 2B. Mark my word. If Xman is out short term it will be Arauz/marwin at SS. As a footnote I can’t see Arroyo contributing much at all. Be shocked if he was in this roster come may.

Give him one more inning and if he walks anyone, release him. Even if he dosnt improve he is better than 10 guys that started last season.

Bcs we are not talking about rounds 2,3,4,5. We are talking about the first round where the safest pick is a college arm. The conclusion is the same for first-rounders: college pitchers underperform college position players. I think taking a position player like House or Fabian is much safer than taking a chance on a pitcher. I going with do t worry about position or age. Take best position player available.

Winckowski looked decent in that inning. Richards has no command in his first two outings.. Absolutely no command. I wouldn’t read to much into it yet. If he is still like this 3 starts from now then it’s maybe meaningful.

CF Hernandez RF Verdugo SS Bogaerts 3B Devers DH Martinez LF Cordero / Renfore 1B Dalbec C Vazquez 2B Gonzalez / Arroyo I would agree with this. It also separates the left handed hitters as the Red Sox have so few. I like the lineup and I know some of you disagree but I honestly think it’s going to be Verdugo in CF and Kiki at 2B. Most everyday. And as a sub note I’d say Arroyo is a long shot to be on this team by May

I’m not taking a pitcher with pick 4 unless you feel he is a sure fire #1. Otherwise the hitter is just more valuable. I don’t care about position. Pick best hitter on your board.

Fwiw it's worth it's not that Duran has "issues" in the outfield. He needs reps - he's only been in the outfield for like 2 full seasons that actually happened. This isn't like, say, whether Downs is or isn't going to be good enough to play short. I read one scouting report that has his arm a 45. Not terrible, Not great. That said arm is equal important in CF or RF. I don’t think it’s arm but overall fielding that would force him to a position change from CF. For what it’s worth fangraphs ranks his defence 35/40. Obviously defence is something that can definaty improve with reps. And his speed definaty plays.

For anyone watching, those two runs were due to Duran's bad read on the fly ball to center. He's not quite ready (defensively) for prime time. Let’s say Duran hits but continues to have issues in the field. Does he start the year/ or when he gets his chance is it in LF. Obviously a lot has to do with the health and success of Cordero, Renfroe Santana and Munoz. I think we can assume Duran starts at AAA and in CF but that time will come when he gets a chance and at this point I don’t think his defence plays CF in MLB.

Am i the only one who thinks it should be Verdugo Vazquez Devers Bogaerts JD that should be out top 5 every game. Bogaerts batting 2nd would be a waste. He’s one of the best hitters in baseball with runners in scoring position. I don’t like catcher 2nd at all. I’d say Vazquez 6-8. We are also all anticipating variations. But for optimal I would say Verdugo Kiki Bogaerts JD Devers Renfroe Dalbec Vazquez Gonzalez This is assuming JD is back. Obviously Dalbec and Renfroe are on a bit of a leash. Keep in mind Cora stated he wants the athletic guys on the top.

Plawecki as the back up catcher, Santana starts in AAA and you go with 14 Pitchers to start. Can Santana opt out if he is sent to minors?? Or is there an opt out date??
