Matuella doesn't have a lot of choices, right? Weird that he has fallen this far. He's a junior and can build back some value next year at Duke if he can come back healthy (not sure he will be ready to pitch before next April).

Lots of good players left for day two. Top Available (BA) 19. Michael Matuella, RHP, Duke 34. Dakota Chalmers, RHP 35. Jalen Miller 37. Jacob Nix 39. Justin Hooper 41. Demi Orimoloye 44. David Hill 46. Joe McCarthy 53. Kyle Molnar 58. Luken Baker 59. Riley Ferrell Don't be surprised to see the Red Sox pick one of these guys. Also, Donnie Everett (21). I'd be surprised to see them pick a signability guy in the 3rd round unless they have some idea if they will sign. Hooper tweeted that he's going to school (UCLA). Schools/Commitments: Everett - Vandy (Boras) Matuella - Duke Jr. (TJ), would rather go pro if the $ is right Chalmers - Georgia Miller - Clemson Nix - uncommitted Hooper - UCLA (Boras) Orimoloye - Oregon Hill - San Diego Jr. McCarthy - Virginia Jr. (injured most of year) Molnar - UCLA (Boras) Baker - TCU Ferrell - TCU Jr.

And if he translates well to wood bats we got the best college bat in the draft probably. And that's what I don't like about the pick. Lack of record, lack of wood bat experience, mostly maxed-out body. In Ben we trust, I guess. Welcome to the nation.

Jeff Passan @jeffpassan 11s12 seconds ago When Astros passed on Arkansas CF Andrew Benintendi at No. 5, Red Sox were thrilled. Sources say he's Boston's guy at No. 7.

Swanson just homered off Jay. Teed off on an elevated slider.

Jay is pitching right now on ESPN2. So far, 2IP, H, R, 2K (solo HR to Wiel). EDIT: 1st home run allowed all year. 3IP, H, R, 3K, HBP Sitting 92-93, touching 94 FB, wicked back-foot slider to RHB (K'ed Swanson)

FWIW, Vitek had been heavily reported elsewhere (Epstein was sighted at his games), and as far as Barnes, Gammons LOVES linking the Sox to local kids - see his suggesting they could take Shaw (who won't be there) or Wiseman (who'd be a bit of a reach) with the third-round pick. Let me throw a counter-opinion out there, I think there's a 50-50 shot that Shaw could slip that far, and I don't think Wiseman would be a reach at all. I'd be surprised if Shaw fell that far, but I agree on Wiseman (although I am not a big fan - too much swing-and-miss for me).

Is it unfair to judge Happ by Kolbrin Vitek? mid-west (Ball State/Cinn) infielder/outfielder, supposed mature bat. Above-average hit tool, position questions. If he was 100% sure to stay in the infield (2B or 3B), he'd be a top five pick. But he may end up in LF, and he won't have the power desired for the position, or as a utility bat. Best comp I've seen for Happ is Kole Calhoun. If drafted, he'd probably start in Salem next year and be knocking on the door two years after that.

My draft board: 1. Swanson 2. Rodgers 3. Tate 4. Bregman 5. Fulmer 6. Whitley 7. Tucker 8. Clark 9. Jay 10. Benintendi What's up, Adam? You don't do the first round mock draft any longer? Or is this one waaayy too unpredicable? Both. Also, the Red Sox pick #7 and then not again until #81, so it didn't seem worthwhile.

I also can't see the point in trying to sign either Hayes or Naylor for a below slot deal and hoping that another talent player drops to the 3rd round due to signability issues. Hayes and Naylor are ranked 57 and 61, respectively by BA. That is a huge talent drop to use with the #7 pick, particularly when you are gambling that someone else that you like will be there in the 3rd round. The Aiken rumors also are little concerning after listening to draft podcast and hearing that he may need additional arm surgery. The thinking would be as follows (and I have no inside knowledge): There are no superstars in this draft, and the Red Sox draft pool is heavily (57%) weighted to the #7 pick. If the Red Sox believe the draft values run similar from #4 to #60, there could be additional value to the Red Sox to sign a 2nd round talent to a favorable deal (let's say $2mm, which is $1.6mm under slot), which frees approx. $1.9mm (including the 5% overage) to sign 3-4 additional 3rd-5th round talents later in the draft. Frankly, one of the lessons from the Trey Ball pick is that perhaps they misplayed it by not getting enough of a discount off the pick (he was signed for $500k below slot) and not spreading the additional monies (and risk) among more prospects. EDIT: It should be noted that while their BA rankings are low, both Hayes and Naylor are late risers and both are now likely to be picked in the top 35-40 picks (or perhaps at 7?). Callis has both going in the late first round.
