Some Cubs fans suggested a Buchholz for Baez swap last week. Sign me up. The Cubs would probably be a good match if the Red Sox decided to trade Buchholz. Theo and his troops likely know what he can do, and reuniting Lester/Ross and Buchholz could be a good match. Also, it is unlikely that CIN/MIL will trade within the division or that CWS will trade within city limits, thereby taking Cueto, Leake, Samardzjia, etc. off the table. The Cubs need upgrades in LF, the bullpen and need one more starter. Currently, they would be the 2nd wild card if the season were to end today. Schwarber could be the answer in LF for the Cubs, so I wouldn't expect him to be traded. Alternatively, there's been some buzz about trading for Zobrist to fill the spot. There's also been some buzz about trading Baez to the Mets for Steven Matz, and it does seem like Baez, Starlin Castro and Billy McKinney are the most likely trade bait for the Cubs to use. Baez is currently hurt and not expected back until sometime in July (broken finger), and I'm not sure we need to be trading for a middle infielder with a lot of swing-and-miss in his game and questions about his ability to handle premium velocity, albeit one who may eventually move to 3B.

The Dodgers might be able to use Clay and Koji. I know we won't get Seager or Urias. Not familiar with the rest of their system. m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=laTeach a man to fish ...

Greenville wins and Savannah loses. Drive lead by one game, with six games left in the first half. (FYI, I believe Savannah wins in the event of a tie)

Napoli and Victorino won't get anything. But, could be sweeteners in a deal. Buchholz + Vic to a team like the Cubbies. Or, Koji + Nap to Pittsburgh. We'd have to pay all of Vic or Nap's salary. So, what's the point of trading them if we're getting no tax relief? Napoli isn't blocking anyone and Shane isn't healthy. Both are gone when the season is over. I don't see how this fixes anything.

We also have access to O-Swing/Contact % and Z-Swing/Contact %. For the minors? Where? That one's news to me. Knew we had access to the other stuff you mentioned. Fangraphs

We have access to wRC+, wOBA and BB/K ratio. Top seven wOBA in the system with 100+ PAs (wRC+ and BB/K ratio in parentheses):
.419 - JBJ (167, 0.56) - age 25, Pawtucket .392 - Witte (148, 0.97) - age 25, Portland .379 - Craig (139, 0.79) - age 30, Pawtucket .378 - Travis (137, 0.59) - age 21, Salem .376 - Mesa (136, 0.20) - age 27, Greenville .375 - Tavarez (135, 0.61) - age 23, Salem .374 - Guerra (134, 0.26) - age 19, Greenville

Greenville is tied in the bottom of the 10th with runners at 1st and 3rd and two outs for Longhi.
Savannah lost, so a win would put Greenville one game ahead with seven to go.
EDIT: On to the 11th.

I would give Moncada a complete pass until next year. Whatever he does this year is gravy. He needs a year to acclimate to US pro ball, a full offseason of training and spring training. Then we can start judging. My guess is that he'll be fine.

Of the players who I think are legitimate trade candidates on the current roster: Guys who I would be comfortable moving for reasonable value: - Koji Uehara
- Mike Napoli
- Shane Victorino
- Ryan Hanigan
- Alejandro De Aza
Guys I'm only moving if I get a knockout offer: - Junichi Tazawa
- Clay Buchholz
- Daniel Nava
- Brock Holt
- Alexi Ogando
It may be heresy, but the Red Sox will have to ask Ortiz if he's willing to be moved to a playoff contender (assuming they guarantee the 2016 option, of course). Ortiz then frees up DH for Hanley and allows for a Castillo/Betts/Bradley OF. If they trade Ortiz, then the Red Sox also have to trade Victorino and Koji. Not sure what spot you are looking to open up by trading Napoli - Holt? Shaw? Also, I don't see the point of trading Hanigan; he takes over for Leon and he and Swihart split time. De Aza becomes your 4th OF, unless you somehow believe that Nava will be able to bounce back fully (I don't). I'm still on the fence with Buchholz, Ogando and Tazawa. My guess is that I'd keep Tazawa for now, unless blown away. I don't think we'll get value for Buchholz or Ogando, so my guess is that they stay under this scenario.

If MIA wins (and they are leading early), BOS will find itself in the #4 spot, due to the tiebreaker. Still in the #4 spot, tied with MIA. 98 games to go.

Other than the liner by Encarnacion, these have been cheap hits by the Jays. Some REALLY cheap hits. Not that one.

I think we may need to find a way to move Ortiz. Hanley still has a good bat but is just unplayable in the field and needs to be our DH now. Then beginning next year we will have a very expensive albeit very good DH, and we can field Jackie, Rusney and Mookie in the OF. We can leave Pablo at third for the rest of the season (might as well at this point) to see if he improves. If he doesn't, we may be stuck with him until Moncada is ready. He's a 5-and-10 guy so it's impossible unless he wants to leave. So it would require a contending AL team that he wants to go to that wants to take on a questionable DH-only bat. In other words it's technically not impossible... with emphasis on the "technically". Also keep in mind that he has an option for next year that kicks in with 425 PAs. He had 231 PAs coming into today, so unless he's hurt for a significant period of time, he'll make at least $10mm next year. Given that Ben signed his buddies Hanley and Pedro, and given that he is very concerned about his place in the game and in Boston folk lore, I see no way he agrees to go elsewhere. I do think there would be a huge market for Ortiz if he were made available (Houston, Minnesota, Kansas City, Anaheim and Toronto, off the top of my head).

The general consensus now (12 months before the draft) is that there are eight premium prospects (in alphabetical order):
Nick Banks, RF, Texas A&M Austin Bergner, RHP, Windemere Prep HS (FL) (UNC commitment) Jason Groome, RHP, IMG Academy (FL) (Vanderbilt commitment) Alec Hansen, RHP, Oklahoma Riley Pint, RHP, St. Thomas Aquinas HS (KS) (LSU commitment) A.J. Puk, LHP, Florida Blake Rutherford, CF, Chaminade Prep HS (CA) (UCLA commitment) Robert Tyler, RHP, Georgia
Obviously, this will change. Lots of pitchers, not a lot of hitters (especially HS hitters).
Other names to be aware of: Ryan Boldt (2013 draftee, Nebraska), Jordan Sheffield (2013 draftee, Vandy, injured), Matt Thaiss (2013 draftee, UVA)

Why was Bianchi still batting for us in this situation? Surely either Betts or Napoli pinch-hitting would have been a better option. Scott Lauber @scottlauber 5m5 minutes ago Any thought to hitting Napoli for, say, Bianchi in 10th? "No," Farrell said. "He needed the day off" #RedSox

I'm honestly curious as to what the (rational) non-button posters think happens between Chili Davis, John Farrell, and Ben Cherington. I haven't called for the firing of anyone just yet (though I brought up the idea with Chili). If Boston continues to play this way, who gets canned and when should we expect it to happen? After the season, if at all. Ben is the owners' guy, John is Ben's guy and Chili is in his first year in the organization. It's not Chili's fault that Panda cannot play defense, It's not Chili's fault that Hanley injured his shoulder, It's not Chili's fault that Ortiz can't catch up to premium fastballs anymore, Whatever fix Dustin found for Nap hasn't stuck. This is on the players and on ownership/GM for picking the players. It is not on the manager or the pitching/hitting coaches IMO. There are no quick fixes. There is no Punto trade to bail out the Red Sox this time. This team is not going to start playing .600 ball for the next 100 games. At best, we were an 85-90 win team going into the season and it appears that we are nowhere near the best-case scenario.
