Archer and Odorizzi up next, no big deal
lol. How many games under .500 do they have to be before DD pulls the ol' ripcord?

Travis Shaw looks great, but Gammons is nuts lol All he said was that, like Tulo and a few above average fielders, one of Shaw's strongest points is a unique ability to throw hard from different angles, with accuracy; that Shaw takes great pride in that ability and practices hard to do so; and that he has been learning to do so since kindergarten while working with his dad who had the same skill. That DDo and coaches are impressed with this skill enhances the narrative. So does the eyeball test of watching him make hard, accurate throws on balls up the line, in the hole, across shortstop, or on swinging bunts. iMO, this is merely heads up connecting the dots concerning this rookie. We should all be so nuts. no we shouldn't. it's asinine hyperbole.

Also will be interesting to hear if Koji is okay. Velo all over the place. Did shake his arm a few times.

Well, that sucked.
Hanley being fired up is pretty awesome to see.
Mookie stung some balls today but saw his average drop to .222. Xander looks a bit lost at .220.

The bullpen and defense look to have cost us here. For the most part both have been solid this season so I am going to view this as an outlier. In no way would I pin this on Kimbrel. Bringing in the closer with 1 out in the 8th and the bases juiced usually does not end up well no matter how good the closer is...
But the bottom of the 9th is coming up so this isn't over quite yet. This site is nuts lol. Kimbrel has two rough outings and he's a bum. Manuel Margot can't hit righties above A ball and he's the second coming of Christ

.416 ops thus far, .619 ops vs. righties last year. Another lefty hitting above average defensive outfielder is about near useless to this 40 man roster.

With how much Taz Koji and Kimbrel have already been used, I doubt they hang onto Layne for much longer

If you only throw sixty innings a year, they better be pretty damn pristine to be worth both a sizable contract and a sizable trade cost. So far, Kimbrel's haven't been. Just hilarious to see you this reactionary and overemotional lol.

Other than Ortiz, no one is really hitting. Betts has been horrific ==> 14K, 1BB he's looked bad in RF too sadly

Luckily not every batter is Josh Donaldson or Jose Bautista. I think Price will be fine. Those are actually the guys that you're paying him to get out.

I've posted this before but David Price typically starts the season slowly. His splits by month show it pretty clearly. Is his velocity usually way down in April? 2015 he averaged 94 on his fastball, at 91.4 thus far this season.

Didn't Price used to throw 95?

Any chance he grows into his body a bit more and gets another tick or two on his fastball? He's young so yeah he's gonna put on some weight, but he's not a guy with a whole lot of physical projection left.

Pitch framing is for the most part a measurable skill. On the other hand Manfred brought up a point the other day when asked about automated systems that the technology isn't there yet. What he said is that the up and down limits on the display boxes are a fixed size but batter heights and stances vary to the point that there are significant differences batter to batter. He said that in studies where the zones were manually adjusted, the umpires were much closer than the statistics are showing. I am a believer in pitch framing value but that throws a giant monkey wrench into the equation. How well can they measure it though? A human calls the balls and strikes and they are in no way consistent. I understand they look at umpires history of calling strikes and compare. For me that only works if the umpires are very consistent and I don't think they are. A guy like Vazquez understands the game so well that he gets pitchers to adjust to Umpires balls/strikes calls on a daily basis. Umpire is calling the low outside corner pitches strikes today when he normally doesn't. Vazquez talks with pitcher and they attack this spot all game long. This would increase his pitch framing stats, when in reality it had nothing to do with pitch framing. It's always going to be a sketchy thing to evaluate. Like last night, everyone went bonkers about Vazquez. But Ted Barrett also had an idiotic strikezone. Vazquez was able to steal strikes outside the zone, but there were also 3-4 pitches at the top of the zone that were actual strikes, or closer to being strikes than some of the outside pitches he got called, that he couldn't get called.

Am I crazy to think he could be an Eric Hosmer type 1B? I think the Goldy comp was nuts but looking around MLB Hosmer is a type with a high BA, doubles power and 15ish+ HR. I don't think a Eric Hosmer offensive prediction is anything crazy, but Travis would have to go a long way to be considered on the same plane as Hosmer defensively.

This is about the best case scenario for Pablo. Lengthy DL stint and long rehab gives him time and ability to stay out of the limelight.
The best outcome of him needing surgery is that we'll finally get to stop reading Nick Cafardo talking about the Padres trading for him despite getting better production from Solarte for 17 million less.

Is that really any less "humiliating," though? I mean, his defensive shortcomings have been obvious to everyone, and by all accounts, he'll still get substantially all of his playing time behind the plate in Pawtucket. Plus, the really scary thing is that if Holt has to fill in at 2B/SS due to an injury, Swihart might actually be one of the better major-league-ready outfielders in the system versus RHP. His long-term future is not at OF, but in the short-term... I think this is definitely about Swihart being the best OF option versus RHP. The move to get him work in left is pretty much a move solely based on him helping the club THIS year. Not sure that's the best thing for the prospect, but if you take a look at Pawtucket, you have a whole mess of righty bats outside Boesch (who can only hit fastballs). Farrell and DD probably really value the familiarity that Swihart gives them as well, as opposed to someone like Sam Travis (who can hit righties) but hasn't had the ML experience. So it makes sense in that regard. But from a player development aspect, I'm not a huge fan. Hopefully this is a big non issue later and Vazquez and Swihart both get reps at catcher and Swihart plays a few games elsewhere.
