Houck with a strong start so far. 3 innings, 0 H, 0 BB, 4 Ks. But 2 WPs? Still, a good start. Wonder how short of a leash he has Edit add: Evidently a wicked short leash. That was it. 40 pitches. Lots of recent college pitchers are on pretty strict pitch counts, so it's not too surprising.

I look at trading Bautista the way I looked at Espinosa: great arms that aren't close are worth selling for arms that are here. Callahan wasn't going to be on the team this year, is Rule 5 (with other similar arms). Nogosek might end up being a decent reliever, but, well, might. The other question to me is, does this trade hurt the Sox making an impact trade now or in the next year? I don't think so. They kept any centerpiece, and they have other secondary pieces (Buttrey types) they could package in a similar way. I hear what you're saying. My main problem of your last sentence is that while we in theory have some pieces for a trade in the offseason, we continue to trade away future trade bait and depth for marginal upgrades. Having a few low-cost arms in AAA who can give some positive innings in the bigs is important, and you never know if one of these guys can become gems.

In order to build a team to "win now," the Red Sox have traded Shaun Anderson, Gregory Santos, Yeison Coca, Mauricio Dubon, Josh Pennington, Travis Shaw, Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, Victor Diaz, Pat Light, Anderson Espinoza, Luis Alejandro Basabe, Jose Almonte, Wendell Rijo, Aaron Wilkerson, Jonathan Aro, Wade Miley, Manuel Margot, Javier Guerra, Logan Allen, and Carlos Asuaje in the last 20 months. They are starting Doug Fister against the Cleveland Indians tonight. AND somehow abad still has a roster slot. 🤔

I don't like it. I rather keep as many assets as possible for a potential trade for a big bat over the offseason. And I'm pretty high on Callahan. But it's not a ridiculous overpay (it is an overpay though but that's what you get for making late July trades). It's fine and I am coming in from the ledge now.

Wow yeah they are definitely auditioning him there tonight. No doubt. Bruce has looked comfortable at first tonight. Not many fielding chances but had a nice pick on a bad throw and he just homered off a left-hander. When the Mets traded for Bruce, he was pretty terrible for the remainder of that season. I remember listening to an interview with him and he said the reason he was bad was because he's a creature of habit and it took him until the offseason to really get back into a routine he was comfortable with. I'm concerned if we traded for Bruce, the same thing might happen.

He's a throw-in the Mets don't need. I'm sure they're looking to shed $, not take any back, not that I have any problem saying see ya to Young as I would be more than happy to see Brentz get a shot at this point. I'm leery of the price they'd have to pay. I wouldn't deal Chavis or Mata for any rentals and at this point I don't think there is any impact player the Red Sox would be chasing that would be worthy of parting with either of those two guys. If the Mets package Reed with Cabrera elsewhere I'd be fine with it. Bruce by himself shouldn't be that costly in talent and the Sox could find a reliever like Kintzler who'd also be a rental. He's not as good as Reed but he's reasonably effective and would cost a lesser player I'd think. Two or three lesser players is better than dealing away one of your top prospects, even if I do think in totality Reed and Bruce are the best package to get. I just can't shake the feeling that one of Chavis, Mata, and/or Shawaryn are goners, with my sense that if they do the package deal, Chavis is a goner and I won't be too happy about it. I would probably include Chavis, Hembree, Young, and Travis for Bruce and Addison Reed. That's not a bad deal for the Mets either. Losing Chavis might hurt but the guy has no position at the moment. You would be upgrading 2 positions at the same time. I can see the appeal but that is a massive overpay in my opinion. Bruce has virtually no trade value because of low demand. So you're essentially giving up chavis and Travis for half a season of reed. It would be nice to have reed, but he's not someone you overpay for-- especially considering he's a rental and his high workload this season. I'm in the camp that thinks we stand down and wait until the offseason. Save what prospects we have and go all-in for Stanton or some other power bat. We'll need chavis and Travis to do that (and then some).

As long as we're not giving up Groome or Mata, I'm fine with this. Except for Houck (who can't be traded yet, IIRC) there really aren't any other pitchers in the system who I care too much about. I don't know. We have a few other arms I'd be angry about giving up for him (ie beeks, shawaryn, etc).

I'm fine with that being the case as long as they pay big in prospects. They need starting pitching. If they're gonna pay a premium to stack their pen, be my guest. Smart to block Frazier from us though. He was a great fit. Yeah, as long as it's a vast overpay by them, that's fine. I only wanted TF if he would cost us a marginal prospect. I'm just scared DD will panic and be the one to overpay.

idk. Chavis seems to be a heavy ask for Frazier. We're talking about maybe 3 or 4 teams that may be in play. I'm sure they'll ask. Heck, I think jimed's right they'll probably ask for even more. But you're right, given the number of decent options at third currently on the market, plus we are not as desperate as we were a few weeks ago, plus I can't think of many teams in major need of a third baseman (Yankees? Cards.... maybe?), I can't imagine DD would give up anything close to Chavis.... at least I hope. Please don't.... I'm more concerned that he'll give Chavis up for a reliever. That's where there's greater demand and less supply.

Was there an injury? Gameday says injury delay. The trainer came out with JF to check on price. Not sure how serious.

I agree with Norm that this shouldn't be as big of a story as it is. And I agree with jimed about the likely source of disagreement was whether rehap starts means anything. However, I do disagree with those who say price was just protecting his teammate. No he wasn't. Price is opinionated and thin-skinned and was channeling his own anger at how he was treated. The topic of conversation just happened to be about ERod. But in reality it was about him (price) and his feelings that's he been unfairly treated (justly or not). ERod was simply collateral damage.

Should only be one rehab start for Eduardo Rodriguez, right? He's getting hit pretty hard right now. Might need another start or two. Hope he feels okay.

My prediction is that if Brentz stays hot through the all star break (a big "if"), he'll be up w the big club platooning at DH/LF against lefties. Hanley has struggled and Benintiendi has never played a full big league schedule so he'll need a few scheduled nights off down the stretch. He might end up being the shot in the arm this lineup's been searching for all season. I don't see JF taking away that role from CY. Maybe next year?

I think I read in 108 Stitches yesterday that there were a few sources who disputed that the Red Sox were interested in Gray. It makes no sense that they'd dedicate resources for a starter when ERod is on the way back. I agree. I discount reports based socket off the team having scouts at a game. I agree. But if I remember correctly they started to scout Gray around the time both ERod and BJ went on the dl, before the relatively positive reports of ERod's recovery came in. Perhaps this scouting was simply due diligence in case ERod and/ BJ injuries were season-ending? At least that's how I'm interpreting our "interest " in him. Probably a "break in the case of emergency" backup plan than an actual desire by DD to trade for Gray.... at least I hope.
