Second guessing the Boston choices with 1% of the information you would need to really be able to compare the players is odd. Two paragraphs of second hand information from some draft blog is better information than reports from half a dozen scouts/crosscheckers? Have yhou ever watched one game that any of these draftees played? Have you sat in their living room and spent two hours interviewing them? Do you have dozens of years of experience in evaluating and projecting baseball talent?
I totally understand saying, "Gee, some of the Internet sites had players ranked in a different order than the Red Sox did. I wonder what the reasons are?" Or, "It will be interesting to see how this plays out because some of the things that I have read about player A or player B made it appear that they would be a better fit for Boston."
But, suggesting that the Red Sox were wrong in picking someone, perhaps because there was little pre-draft buzz about Boston's interest in a player or because a draftee came from a small college program or a cold weather state so that there was less information available about them for some Internet draft mavens to take into consideration in ranking players, puzzles me.

A player for team A leaves a game against team B because of an injury. The game is suspended because of rain. He is traded to the other team (team B) before the game is resumed. Can he enter the game for team B when it resumes?

Wow. Blue Jays had drafted all pitchers before the 10th round! Thats crazy! If a team feels good about depth in, say, position players, but is very concerned about pitching quality in their organization, why not go whole hog regarding drafting pitchers in one draft? You will have a much better group of incoming pitchers than you would if you balanced your selections. It is also possible that, sticking to the "best available player," the Blue Jays had a pitcher at the top of their board each time their pick came around. Maybe that approach was taken and/or Toronto used a strategy similar to that employed by the Red Sox last year (and this year?) regarding rounds 6-10.

dcprosportsreport.com/MLBMocks.htmVirtually every pre-draft prediction of the first round is found on this link. I checked the first 28 on the list. No one picked Ball to Boston, but a few had Ball going ahead of No. 7.

It appears that Mayo is more concerned about defending his rankings than staying consistent regarding his evaluation of players.

It's lucky for Pedro Astacio that the Rockies did not draft Teddy Stankiewicz.

Any of these would have the board doing backflips:
OF Austin Wilson, Stanford (29) LHP Sean Manaea, Indiana State (18) RHP Alex Balog, San Francisco (32) C Jonathan Denney, Yukon HS (OK) (25) RHP Bobby Wahl, Mississippi (36)

The Red Sox won't do it, of course, but, after the signing deadline passes, I would love to see who were the top 50 on their board.

Every pick by every team is a "last minute' decision because you do not know who the team picking ahead of you will choose. Each team has a board. They almost always go with the highest pick on their board. The Red Sox said several years ago that they go into the draft (where 1,200 players will be selected in the entire draft) with 300 people on their board to get them through 40 rounds. Obviously, there are wide differences of opinion regarding the middle and later rounds. There are also great differences of opinion regarding the relative value of the top 100 players.

Who is worse? Harold Reynolds Greg Amsinger or the knucklehead standing at the BA draft board with Jim Callis? It's a horse race.

I could understand disappointment in the pick if it was a high-floor college guy, but this is a tall, projectable, very athletic HS left-hander. You don't have to be in love with the kid based on that alone, but the Sox spend more on scouting than most, and were surely prepared for, as mentioned earlier, the board blowing up. They like Ball better than Meadows, than Shipley, or anyone else available. He's not a safe pick, no more than those mentioned, or Dom Smith, or any other intriguing upside names. They took a huge chance on the guy they clearly like better than anyone else on the board. That should have you intrigued, not disappointed. They've done a lot more homework than we have, than BA, or Callis or Mayo or BP has. That's not to say they're right, but give them credit for taking a chance on upside and athleticism. How dare you be rational and logical.

When did it become a bad thing to draft an 18-year-old lefty who is 6-5 or 6-6 and has three potential plus pitches and is very projectable because he "only" pitches at 91-93 and touches 96? Also, "disappointment" expressed about a prospect who no one on this board has seen pitch when the Red Sox have devoted all of their resources to ranking the players on the board is more of an expression of unmet expectations than real criticism.
