If not catching Tampa anyway, and going to be playing MFY, almost have to root for them to get some breathing room ahead of Oakland? Either way there is no good outcome from NYY-OAK tonight. Or no bad outcome maybe?

Random old news line:
If you think someone would pick Winckowski then go for it. If he was a future starter though and any good, maybe you give up him instead of Aldo for Schwarber. Im not convinced he'd be more than a mid reliever, and if he's lost for nothing, I'll live.

I cant disagree with any of that. But that just makes it more clear that Potts/Rosario are both trades/DFA, and Munoz/Franchy/Davis/Richards/R.Hernandez are probably all gone or DFA as well (would rather have Downs/Winck over any of them anyway...)

My thoughts subject to immediate and frequent changes: Hard to see them letting Schwarber go, unless JDM stays and the money is too much, they can save money letting Richards go though I still kinda like him.
SP - Sale-Eovaldi-Pivetta-Houck-Whitlock-Seabold DL/Depth - Mata-Groome-Bello-Crawford
(11)
RP - Barnes-Sawamura-Perez-(6 mil option)-Darwinzon-Brazier-Taylor Depth - Rios - Bazardo - Valdez - Ort
(10)
OF - Verdugo-Renfroe-Schwarber Depth - Duran
(4)
IF -SIGNING-Kiké-Bogaerts-Devers-Arroyo Depth - Arauz-Dalbec-(Casas) DH-JDM
(9)
C - Vazquez-Plawecki Depth - Wong
(3)
four spots for:
Ward (I thought probably... but will make rosters very tight) Ottavino, Davis, Richards or Robles (maybe 1 or 2 stay)
Munoz/Potts/Rosario/Franchy/R.Hernandez/Arroyo/Davis all candidates to DFA and keep if possible, but at least four have to get dropped.
Santana/ERod/Shaw gone (ERod thank you for your service)
Played themselves off: Jeter Downs Doubtful: Winckowski, German, Gilberto,
Leaves one spot for a better infielder, but I think we won't see a lot added (just Crawford, Bello?), and you roll the dice with Downs and Hernandez to keep them. That Casas is depth but doesn't have to be added is fantastic. Arroyo has control and potential... but if he cant stay on the field not sure he adds enough. I think you'll see them protect more pitchers, and then once the 60 day DL is allowed, get a couple spots to put Arroyo/Franchy or whoever they need to add back for depth. Please be kind as I'm sure I missed an obvious person to add/keep, Ill edit if I come up with anything obvious.

In reality the Benintendi trade comes down to is he the versatile OF with hit tool some power and speed that we (I) thought he was when we kept him over Moncada in the Sale trade? Or is he the 1-2 WAR player who is going to come at too high a cost to be worth it. I still like him, but I also still believe in JBJ...
They got a fine return, for a guy who would be the clear 4th best OF (ignoring that Kiké could then play 2B and we'd have been saved from the Franchy Cordero Experience)

It's nice to see good MiLB teams... feel like the pattern is Red Sox are good and their farm teams always not great. And there is a bit of a necessary inverse relationship of course (draft position, trades etc).
I think the biggest change we will see is having prospects (Casas, Crawford, Duran) serving as MLB depth, and maybe not having as many AAAA types. Would help out the 40 man situation.

HR over the Fluor Monster is the only ball I ever got from a baseball game... landed at my feet eating dinner at a restaurant behind the stadium. I think 2009-10? Great city and stadium if you can ever get an excuse to get there.

Having Plawecki seem competent helps that decision, but I think you keep him next year. Dream on him having a start to finish season in a contract year.
Does WAR work the same for catchers? I would think catcher defense, and the drop to what replacement value is, not to mention if it helps the pitching staff just wouldn't be measured by WAR value.
(I don't know how that would go for CV, just asking... personally Id ask Eovaldi and Sale and if they love throwing to him, ante up).

Eddinson Paulino seems interesting... also it says he is R5D eligible next year, he should have an extra year, right? Doesn't take away from the point of in a year or two there will be a lot of high school/DSL signees way away from the big leagues all Rule 5 eligible. Thanks, Covid! An extra year of what and why? Sorry, not following. There's no Rule 5 extra year because last year was a wash or anything. He's a 2018 signee who was 16, he gets a 5th year, no?

If they are close on the tax/cap, does picking up Perez' option, then either trading him or hoping he is better in relief save them the buyout counting against this year?

Unfortunately, Garmin Cecchini became kind of obsolete with the advent of smartphones with GPS. Jeez, you think if I'd edit my post, I'd go back to fix the autocorrect. Ill leave it as a penance.

Sad the Sox might not make the playoffs? No fear...
TB: Rich Hill in the rotation, Manny Margot starting OF CHW: Kopech as stellar swingman, Moncada starting at 3B, some gay named Kimbrel OAK: Lowrie, Mitch Moreland, Frankie Montas as a SP LAD: Betts, and the guy BOS is still paying $16 million a year for
There's a few others, but it does seem like DD can take credit for helping build a WS team no matter what this year.

I know lots of factors go into rankings, and Im not a scout, but if you took the position players in the top 10 after Casas (Gilberto, Duran, Downs, Yorke) and said I could only keep one in the system, I'm probably saying Yorke.
That said Garmin Cecchini who was better than Sean Coyle was .350 .469 .547 1.016 in Salem (at 22) and JBJ 359 .480 .526 1.006 a year earlier (-0.8, -0.6 for age, and the level was A+ at the time). Two guys who spawned lots of "please promote him" threads. So I guess I'm saying lots can change and you cant read into stats and overreact, but im going to overreact because it's really fun.
Edit: Oh my god guys, the Garmin Cecchini thread is amazing, just a treasure trove of 'untouchable' prospects who never made the majors.

As above and more there are lots of good reasons for Houck to continue as a starter. Really the only reason to keep him and Whitlock as RPs is because how awful the pen could be without them.

I feel obligated to post the comment I was about to 'when you are batting shaw in this situation, without any other options, you've already lost the war'
What do I know?

Its so hard to get invested in this team knowing the end will be so ugly, but damn we've been following Bogaerts/Raffy for so long, you just get sucked in.

A couple weeks ago I posted there's precedent (Papelbon) to plan to go back to starting but due to need, just be the closer. At this point, gotta wonder if Whitlock is the closer next year, though Id like to see him start.

Nothing against Xander as I love him but he is a Caribe island guy and IMO has that vibe, that can be a good thing to but intensity is not his thing. I think the fact is there is no captain and none of the veterans have that gene or cashet. As far as the blunders go I think it has a bit to do with guys trying to do too much by being aggressive and it has backfired at every turn. Rounding bases or trying for the extra base is a team trying to make something happen because they are feeling the pressure and the weight of the situation they find themselves in. Just my thoughts on the subject. In amny ways, I think this falls on Cora. If not their leader - although the team as a whole seems to perceive him as such, based on public comments - defense and base running philosophy rests with him, as does plate discipline philosophy. In fact, he's repeatedly expressed some frustration with the latter and defense. I agree, though, when the team gets behind lately they start chasing balls out of the zone and trying to do too much on the basis. In football we'd call this "lack of discipline" or just "failure to execute your assignment." Much the same on the bases (don't give away outs, they are finite) and chasing pitches (don't give the pitcher "free" strikes). Also, when they were winning and still did this - Devers in particular seems to find pitches six inches off the ground irresistible - we tend to ignore or forget, but it's been happening enough all year to be noticeable. You don't always need crazy intensity... remember Manny in 07 (?) turned the series around by saying essentially he didn't care. They just need to pitch better hit better and play better defense. That said, if they aren't paying Dustin Pedroia to come in and get this team going, what are they paying him for?

That makes it more striking... not a lot of $750,000+ guys washed out before ever touching AA ball without a personal reason.

Looking at the lineups... I wasn't a fan of the pick at the time (knowing nothing other than what I read of course), but Cole Brannen's career seems essentially over. There are some guys we had high hopes for that didn't pan out over the years, but he got a higher bonus than Kukuk, Denney, Rei. Kolbrin VItek made it two seasons in Portland. Who was the last $1 million signee who never made it to AA ball?

There's the back issue. He's playing well but we don't know how much treatment he's getting for that. But I've been talking about his promotion like it was imminent for weeks now so don't look at me. I mentioned before and just curious if anyone has perspective, how much does not wanting to upend a kid with just a few weeks in the season (knowing what we know about MiLB living costs, leases etc) impact promotions? Granted Yorke has money to figure it out, but I wonder that since he's starting in Greenville no matter what next year, why bother. Next year is the year for the mid-season promotion if he rakes and pushes to AA in my mind.

I know Mookie was thrown out for fun but in 2025 he will still be owed 8/$220M...Xander and Devers would likely be pushing $30M/yr and Verdugo in the mid teens. I think it is very unlikely Verdugo is on the Sox in 2025. He is the same problem Benintendi was: do you pay a guy millions to be a ~2.5 WAR guy? This is part of the reason I think a plan that goes beyond a few years is fantasy. There is one guy in the Sox org I expect in the OF in 2025, Duran. I think Devers is still at 3rd. I *think* Casas is at 1st. After that, I would leave every position blank at the moment. I’m not sure there is a pitcher in the organization who will be in the rotation in four years. Between age, cost, and the ever-present possibility of injury, who can say? You always pay a guy millions to be a 2.5 WAR guy. You need what 35 WAR to win a division?

I tend to just think Bloom hasn't had enough time to be judged the way Guidas is... yet. The Red Sox should be contenders every year, but as someone on the forefront of hating DD, I am willing to acknowledge it takes more than two years to fully reverse it. If next year he leverages a stocked system to boost a contender late, we'll talk about how it all led up to this and what a great rebuild. I don't love all the moves, but tend to assume the FO know more about specific players and current baseball than I do. So far we've had one terrible pandemic year and one surprisingly competent year with a crash and burn ending. I don't think we can fully judge how Bloom will treat or maintain a contending team on that basis. Next year is the year to judge in my mind, particularly in what he does with the young stars.
