I don’t know what the intention going in was, but it seems like Teel falling determined their draft. Instead of spreading out the money, they went at a few high end guys, and spent day 2 finding the money for them. I’m sure they knew it was likely, but still a little disappointing if they don’t end up with any of the three high schoolers. In 7 years they get two starters out of it, would be a wild success.

Interesting…..”Theo Denlinger is being promoted to Triple-A after posting a 2.29 ERA over 19.2 IP with 20 K to 7 BB at Double-A. The 26-year-old righty was acquired in exchange for RHP Franklin German during the offseason. He's #48 on the #SP60. Full scouting report…” Denkinger is promoted to AAA, whereas, the Chicago already DFA Franklin German… Took my boys to a Portland away game locally a few weeks back, and Theo's father went out of his way to help them get their first ever autographs... was a special moment, and something as a father I'll always appreciate. So I'm rooting for him to make it to Boston.

Thad Ward 1.08 WHIP in 8 IP. Im not saying he is a future ace, or a sure thing SP, but is he much different as a prospect than Pivetta was, who has turned out to be a super valuable guy? I have yet to hear an argument for letting him go that makes sense for a fringe playoff team. No one can say Song was predictable/preventable, but Ward showed enough last fall there was no chance 1) not to be picked and 2) not to be better than some pitchers on the 40 man.

One lesson is that you need to sell your guys a year early if you want to tempt the out-of-their-minds general managers to do something stupid. Which is why Bloom is stuck. Its just too hard for a team that usually contends.

"We were fortunate that it was a well-rounded trade,'' Rizzo said. "We've got two pitchers, two outfielders and a shortstop, which fit our needs perfectly.''
Meanwhile the Sats are trading for need in the low minors (I know they aren't really, its just another dumb thing in a day full of them)

"His arrival in Boston clouds the future of Triston Casas, a 22-year-old who was selected by Boston 26th overall in the 2018 amateur draft. "
No it doesn't, ESPN

Tough spot. They did what they could to sell and buy together. Groome and Dalbec have to come off 40 man anyway. It seems fine if they weren’t going to fire sale. I do wonder if they could have moved earlier if a JDM or Eovaldi market would have been there. I hope the Vazquez return is good and I’d be fine with him coming back next year.

A lot of us here have been following Bogaerts since Mellen’s DSL reports and as he jumped right to Greenville. It’ll be tough to watch him somewhere else even if that’s what makes sense.

There’s no right solution to Bogaerts. You can’t hold that against Bloom.

There’s a difference between automatically hating everything they do, and wishing they did some things differently. Overall I like what Bloom has done.
Last time I got this much hate here was after Dalbecs rookie year where I said trade him for whoever you get, his value will never be higher.

I think Im on board with whoever said that the first $125k for all picks are locked in and cant save more than that... its weird for a 10th rounder to get $7,500 and an 11th rounder to get 125,000.

They must really have liked Anthony. So to make the Anthony reported number work and to get Brannon to ~$800K they need an extra $842,350. They've got about $1.4 million in total slot money between Rogers, Meidroth, and Dean to get to those savings. I feel confident enough in that. Rogers $617,500 Chase Meidroth $461,200 Noah Dean $344,000 For the record, once we know someone has signed or reported to sign, it would be catastrophically bad for the numbers to fall apart all of the sudden or oops they are 6.2% over the limit. Its pretty rare their strategy doesn't work and they cant sign their guys, and when they do (Fabian) its the exception that proves the rule where they have a backup plan or it doesn't topple any other signings. The only question is if they get someone after 10 overslot, and I assume no chance.

Rafaela and Yorke were both SS, right? Im sure there are others. Duran was a 2B.

I mean look at what Boston gave Chris Sale when they had no reason to (I hated the deal at the time...) why wouldn't Raffy look at that and think he should get paaiiiddd. Different regime, but same owner cutting the checks.
Just pay him. Shut up and pay him, or just admit you dont want to win.

Somewhat on topic... personally Id get Dalbec and Downs off the 40 man as soon as possible.
When you have Casas, Story->Meyer, Devers, it seems like the obvious answer will be let X go, sign a 2B and if Yorke becomes such a great prospect you have too many good hitters in the IF, so be it. Hard to see Xander being a part of this team going forward, as much of a shame as that is.

Toronto has basically been the only team for the last few weeks acting like they have any interest in the playoffs.

The 'bracket' format for a 4 way tie is great. As is picking the opponent.
Eric - Thanks for putting that together. Im just assuming you are right on all this, it's making my brain hurt.

WASHINGTON, DC - A familiar scene Saturday night as the Red Sox lost a late inning lead in a critical game. More concerning perhaps is Alex Cora yet again not being up to the task, denying his players a chance to settle it out on the field. A masterful start by Tanner Houck - unblemished through five innings and just 53 pitches, went for naught as pinch hitter Christian Arroyo was summoned to strike out on his behalf, turning the mound over to the beleaguered bullpen. A promising night went downhill from there; first the perfect game, then the shutout, and eventually the win each slipped out of hand.
Which beat writer has been working on this since strike 1 to Arroyo?
Hopefully reverse jinx. Goodnight all.

The way he was going, you could at least think he could try to go 7. and two innings is worth the extra out letting him hit.
Whats perplexing is this can only go bad for Cora. Even if they win, its why not let him pitch more. And if the pen blows it, thats going to be written up as a fireable offense.

The only argument for that is that he hasn’t pitched more than 50-60 pitches the last month, but damn that takes some guts to make that call Gotta think that plays into a bit. He finally found a loophole in the "we cant let you pitch six innings because you struggle third time through the lineup" rule, and Cora yanked the rug out from him anyway. Id take Houck switching gloves and pitching lefty better than half the pen some days.

I'm sure the folks here who hate the yankees more than they love the Red Sox couldn't stomach this, but gotta think the easiest path to just get in is to root for a Yankees sweep. That with an two Oakland wins means Boston could clinch going 3-3, worst case tie going 2-4.
