A D- is harsh! Accurate in my opinion, but harsh. He has 0 leverage if he expects slot. I am not feeling good about this draft. Sox still got 4 rounds to go or is it 3 for us?(sarcasm) I am curious about the $20,000 players! The below slot "parameters" should of been in place before the pick. It's not really a fair grade because they're grading the pick in a vacuum when in reality it needs to be viewed in the context of how they use the money. I do understand that. If he signs and signs below slot. Plus get who they have in mind rounds 3-5.

Bleacher Report "First Round (No. 17 Overall): Nick Yorke, 2B, Archbishop Mitty High School (CA) In order to be a legitimate draft prospect as a high school second baseman, a player has to have significant offensive upside. Yorke offers that with a 55-grade hit tool that ranks among the best in this year's high school class and some present power in his 6'0", 200-pound frame. Shoulder surgery during his junior season robbed him of what was once solid arm strength, and he has slid down the defensive spectrum as a result. That puts a ton of pressure on his bat, and with that comes some obvious risk. Grade: D- The Red Sox don't pick again until No. 89 overall, and most expected them to take a risk on a high school player as a result. But this pick was completely off the board. Yorke checked in outside the top 90 prospects on Baseball America (96) and MLB.com (139). He'll have to sign well-below-slot, and they'll have to come away with a couple of steals on Day 2 for this to make a lick of sense." A D- is harsh! Accurate in my opinion, but harsh. He has 0 leverage if he expects slot. I am not feeling good about this draft. Sox still got 4 rounds to go or is it 3 for us?(sarcasm) I am curious about the $20,000 players! A risk they could afford to take. Do the Sox usually pick this high in the draft? Our they punishing themselves for stealing signs? Lol I know he was not BPA they could sign at slot on their own boards. "industry was higher on him" Which industry is that? I hope he works out.

BA's write up: Some evaluators believe Yorke is the best pure hitter on the west coast, among high schoolers. A 6-foot, 195-pound shortstop committed to Arizona, Yorke has a long track record of performing as a high schooler, with a well-balanced swing that’s routinely on time. This spring before the coronavirus shut down the 2020 season, Yorke was tapping into a bit more power as well, hitting the ball with authority to the pull side and up the middle. He has a chance for a future plus bat and fringe-average power while handling a middle infield spot. Yorke dealt with a shoulder injury prior to his junior year and is still recovering from that, which leads some scouts to believe he’ll be a better fit as an offensive second baseman. Still, other scouts have said his arm has looked good, with a better arm stroke recently and above-average arm strength. With solid footwork, instincts and an internal clock, he has a chance to stay at shortstop, or he could slide to third base. Wherever he ends up defensively, teams love the bat that Yorke brings to the table. There are a number of teams that have Yorke evaluated in the second- or third-round range, but he could be a difficult sign out of Arizona. Not a first round talent. He's not. He's a reach obviously. Underslot signing for sure. What is the success rate of an average major league player after the first round? Add to that sign ability issues, no position flexibility, and I doubt rounds 3-5 are so deep in talent(3rd yes). Draft a College senor next time. I'm not a fan of the "I hope" these guys we also like are available in rounds 3-5. I just saw Ian's tweet about with no 2nd round pick you have to get creative. Why? Sign 4 players roughly at slot. Why gamble with a first round pick? It reminds me of when we drafted Cannon.

It seems like there has been buzz around pretty much every Red Sox target (Hassell, Abel, PCA, Cavalli, Crochet) being gone by 17 but if that happens, someone has to fall, right? Maybe Mitchell? Just seems unlikely they all go so high, especially with teams likely to be more conservative. PCA will be available. Bitsco!!!! Ed Howard and Jared Kelley I really like as well. I could tolerate a catching prospect as well. Our 3rd round pick may be as good as our first two 2nd round picks last year.

I know he is "missing time" with his 2 year desk work, but is it a huge deal? I highly doubt the Sox won't have him on their 40 man roster regardless. I do feel bad for Song though. The poor kid is saying and doing the right things. Hopefully he won't have any physical set backs. I know it is difficult to stay in good pitching shape while in the academy. Maybe it is more of a big deal. I'm done rambling and ready to read up on the upcoming draft tonight! And listen to a podcast.

Thanks for the dates. I'll adjust my vacation time. Looking forward for another draft. Who on this wonderful site isn't though. We need to draft each round the BPA(that we can sign). I agree with earlier comments that next years draft will be deep. I also believe it will make the 23's draft much deeper.

I personally like our approach to not spending our money into very few top end prospects. These kids are to young and more risky to know what you got. So I like spreading out our bonuses like the Sox have done recently. I do not mind a 2 million dollar sign like Bleis at all. Just one larger signing though.

I have been very very busy or unable to give my input in my personal rankings. First off, you guys do a great job with ranking players! Each and every year the site improves in ranking prospects. I am no expert by ANY means. Our system is very weak as we know, but shows promise.
1. Bryan Mata (Upside of a 2-3) 2. Triston Casas 3. Thad Ward (Upside of a 2-3) 4. Noah Song (Upside of a 2-3) 5. Jarren Duran 6. Jay Groome(could be 1 by June 2020) 7. Gilbero Jimenez (could be 1 by June 2020)
8. Bobby Dalbec 9. Tanner Houck

Thoughts on Daniel McGrath cracking the top 60? I am aware he is an "old man" with marginal stuff. He seems to be learning how to pitch.

With Blalock and Simas signed I am very happy with our draft this year! I doubt the Red Sox are going to sign any more players, but I hope to sign at least one more. If they sign even one more player like Mauloni, Irwin, or Roberts possibly would be amazing?

Trading Houck makes little sense. The team is desperate for cheap quality pitching. Have to be more than an 8th inning reliever in return. Trading young pitching from our organization is not wise! I'd rather gamble on internal players than do a trade. If we have a great 2nd half it will not be because of a trade we make.

He may end up being a sneaky pick. He is a great guy with a great worth ethic! He'll also be a good leader in any clubhouse! 50k is more than I had expected, but not a shock.

I am very very happy we signed our best pitching prospect out of our draft. I wonder if he has the highest upside and floor of any of our pitchers? I am really high on Mota though. I really hope we are able to sign at least one more player between rounds 12-16!

Other players the Red Sox have not signed: Zach Watson, Nick Quintana, Jordan Sheffield, Matt Thaiss, Carson Fulmer, Alex Bregman, Mac Williamson, Hunter Renfroe, Alex Meyer, Yan Gomes, Yasmani Grandal. I could go on. Dont forget Charlie Blackmon! haha

Remember when the Sox ended up not signing Senquez Golson? The Sox then realocated their money and signed a guy named Mookie. By not signing Keane may end up helping us. The draft is a crap shoot. Hopefully the Sox get it right. It is a hit and miss. Some of those players we drafted we're either asking too much, or we just missed on. Of those draft picks at the time I really wanted Quintana, Bregman. and Renfroe. I really want Keane and Anu.
