I swear I'm not second-guessing this trade, which I still think was the right thing to do, but I *note with interest* that Sale has a 2.6 WAR edge on Grissom so far this season. Sale has a 2.22 ERA and the peripherals to match; he is easily having his best season since 2018. Meanwhile, the workhorse the Red Sox got to replace the injury-prone Sale is out for the season and the young erstwhile healthy second baseman they traded Sale for missed a month with injury and then caught a flu that was perfectly timed to apparently ruin his swing for a major chunk of the season and currently sits at -0.7 WAR. The 2024 Red Sox in a nutshell.
I still think this was a trade you have to take a shot on. They need young talent and they don’t have a long term 2B so it was worth rolling the dice on Grissom. Obviously we all hope he turns it around soon, but either way it’s hard to hate the move. The only part I didn’t like was how much money the Sox ate, but that didn’t even matter because they weren’t going to spend the savings anyway. It’s getting harder and harder to pick who I think is the next 2B out of Grissom, Yorke, Valdez, Paulino, and Meidroth though that’s for sure. They all have their yellow flags.

There are a lot of players that will need to be added to the 40 man, so I hope the Red Sox can will be buyers at the deadline even if not for anyone crazy. The lack of depth all around is wild for a team that isn’t too bad.

If Ceddy could just hit a consistent 250...... .232 BABIP is ripe for some progression to the mean

My guess, not checked, is the OPS is probably misleading given the boom-or-bust nature of the offense so far. If they score a ton of runs in a few games then yeah, the season numbers will look better but the offense isn't that good on a game-by-game basis. Something like how Rafaela is leading the team in RBI with 23 but 7 were from the one game he went off. They should be using ERA+ and OPS+ which would make Boston’s pitching even more impressive, but would show the offense as league average. But even doing that, I agree that the streakiness is buoying their offensive stats because they’ve been feast or famine.

Mayer with his 16th double of the season, which leads all the minor leagues according to the MiLB tv broadcast. Mike Lowell walked so that Duran and Mayer could run

Another guy with a great athletic profile but GB issues. Definitely can stick in RF though which is a bonus relative to Tibbs.

Moving Duran over instead of K’ing is sadly a big step forward for the heart of the order

I'll take the over on that, though it's probably the right line. I wouldn't expect a promotion until at least the late June timeframe. I doubt they want him up in Boston, at least until the tail-end of the year, from a service time standpoint, but the earlier he gets promoted to Worcester, the more pressure there is to promote him again. Letting him enjoy some sustained success after an injury-plagued year while he continues to work on hitting lefties and cutting his whiff rate makes sense to me. He’s been great but I think he still has some things he can work on in Portland. He hasn’t been walking much, he has a 51% GB rate, and continued work on breaking pitches would be helpful too. One he really starts mashing I’ll be more eager to see him in AAA, but I think it would be reasonable to keep him in Portland for the majority of the season or even the entire year.
