So, David Durden retired yesterday. 2017 20th round pick, was projected to start the year with another stint in the GCL.

A-Rod hired to replace Aaron Boone as one of the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball analysts. He'll be alongside Jessica Mendoza, and then likely one of Jon Sciambi or Karl Ravech doing the play-by-play. Wow -- ESPN bypassed their in-house play-by-play options, instead opting to bring in Matt Vasgersian.

RE: the Austin Jackson deal, I think it's a pretty meh signing. Definitely attractive from a cost/commitment/luxury tax perspective, but given the ballpark and corner outfielders, I'd have liked to have seen them obtain a truly plus defensive center fielder. Jackson is likely in the average to somewhat below average range with the glove in center, and at the plate he's not much of a hitter vs right-handed pitching, not to mention he doesn't run anymore. He could be a close-to-replacement level player, honestly.
Jarrod Dyson would have been nice, and probably not much more expensive than Jackson. He's a worse pure hitter, but markedly superior defensively, and adds offensive value with his legs. At least Jackson's contract won't prevent them from getting a starting or platoon type center fielder if the opportunity arises.

Padres sign my boy Allen Craig to a minor league deal. Looked like absolute toast with the Sox, but he strung together a great few seasons in St. Louis, pre-injury. 33 years old now, and pretty much a 1B-only without much of any juice left in the bat, it seems -- but I'll be rooting for him. Great guy.

I'm not too worried about the Jags offense. They're containable from a passing standpoint, and they'll run the ball a bunch. The Pats run defense has been fine, and hopefully they can hold down the interior against Fournette. Malcolm Brown's been good at that, and I wonder if we'll see Branch active for the game.
The defense, however, could very much seal off key pieces of our offense entirely. Whoever they let slip will be in line for a big day. Dion, Amendola, and Gronk are the easy calls, and how Jacksonville works to secure them without opening up others will be fascinating.

Will be very interesting to see how the Jags cover the Pats offense. Do they go with a conventional Ramsey on Cooks, Bouye on Hogan, Jack + strong safety on Gronk approach? Or do they try to get a little craftier, and attempt to shut down Gronk with Ramsey, Bouye on Cooks, and get someone else on Hogan? Will they pay special attention to Amendola in the slot, with one of their top CBs, or just let their slot CB cover him?
It'll also be imperative to minimize the pressure on Brady -- really hoping Waddle is able to recover enough be effective at right tackle. Flemming has been perfectly serviceable so far (and by some grades better than Waddle), but Jacksonville will be a pretty tough challenge. Wonder if we'll see a lot of Dwayne Allen helping block on the right side.

Some three-way trade action: This is a very interesting trade. White Sox Joakim Soria LHP Luis Avilan +$3million 2million from LA 1million from KC LA gets LHP Scott Alexander INF Jake Peter KC gets RHP Tyler Oaks INF Erik Mejia The Royals gain 9million in cash by trading Soria. This looks like a good formula for a Hanley trade. How so? Soria is a useful piece, who will probably close for the White Sox and then be used as a trade chip mid-season, if not sooner, to bring back something of value. No one is trading for Hanley unless we cover like 75% or more of the $22M he's owed, in exchange for nothing of value. Or if we take on a similar bad player/contract. It's not just that he's a minimal value DH type -- he has a vesting option for $22M in 2019 if reaches 497 plate appearances this season.

Amazing to think that, as this season was about to unfold, many considered Lewis to be a legitimate cut candidate. As Jerry Thorton shares over at Barstool, Dion in 2017: Not to mention he's a great kick returner -- I do get scared every time he decides to bring one back, though. --- For the PFF respecters -- not great for the "Gilmore's a bust" crew:

Highly recommend folks read the piece -- some good commentary from Bard himself. And never forget what he once was: What kind of pitch is that? It looks like a screw ball. Was it a changeup? 99.1 MPH 2-seamer. Filth. On August 9, 2010. From Swisher:

Machado's 2013 defensive season at third base was truly beyond elite. He won't come close to that again, but his current defense at third is in the range of very good to outstanding. There's not enough data to pass a solid judgment of his defense as a shortstop, but I'd estimate it'll be average-ish as he rounds out his 20s, and that'll offset most if not all of the WAR boost he'll get from playing a more valuable position.

From July: However, he never ended up getting into a game there, which isn't a great sign. So right now I'd say the answer to your question is "not really".

Stanton's a solid defender, but for a guy with his injury history, I'd prefer to keep him out of the most difficult RF in baseball. He's had groin and hamstring trouble in the past, and we're looking to acquire him for his bat to be in the lineup as much as possible. Left field with the opportunity to DH a substantial amount would be ideal, especially as he continues to age out of his twenties. He strikes me as the type of guy who will slow down considerably (range-wise), earlier than some other physical profiles.
RE: Hanley, I'm fine with the approach of DL'ing him if he's not able to play first base regularly. His glove may be below average, but he's not a complete butcher. And you'd want to bring in a LHH, solid defensive option for first, potentially knocking Holt off the roster. Unfortunately Travis just didn't show enough last year to be the option for 2018 that we'd hoped he'd be.
It's an absolute no-brainer to target JDM over Stanton. Hanley's situation isn't crippling enough to be a real factor in pursuing Stanton (and moving a current OF) instead.

According to MLB.com, "The Mariners announced that they’ve acquired first baseman Ryon Healy from the division-rival Athletics in exchange for right-hander Emilio Pagan and minor league infielder Alexander Campos." So I would assume Alonso isn't going back to Seattle? Yeah, no way they bring Alonso back now. He'd make for a nice platoon partner with Healy, but they'll probably try to ride Healy on a regular basis and hope he develops into a better-than-replacement level player vs. right-handed pitching. They also have a LH bat in Vogelbach hanging around, but they don't seem too high on him. Not big on the idea of the Sox and Yonder -- I'd prefer to just bring Moreland back on a one-year deal if it came down to it.

I think Nick Castellanos could be a buy low guy on the radar. He came on during the 2nd half and he was in the top 5 of qualifiers in hard hit % on fangraphs and near the bottom of soft contact. He should be able to play an average 1B and could be a 30-35 HR type in Fenway. He isn't the big bopper we need in the middle but as a second hitter added he could fit the mold. I was thinking the Tigers would want a lot or prospects for him. He'll only be 26 in March. He's amassed 1.3 career WAR, has been horrible defensively, and is a free agent in two years. I don't think he'd cost a whole lot.

How many years left with Pedroia? He looks toast. Signed through 2021. To be fair, he battled a major knee injury this season and still managed to put up 1.5-2 WAR (depending on which WAR you use) in only 105 games. It's probably time to give him fairly frequent rest and move him down in the order, but he's still a solid player -- and worth his contract, for now.

His contract runs through 2018 and the Jays have a club option on him for 2019. He looks to finally be a good player after making some meaningful changes to his plate approach and swing, but not sure how you think we could get him.
