It wasn't silly - it was incomprehensible. You don't ever give Longoria something he can crush in that situation. It was dumber than Maddon opting to pitch to Ortiz. I mean, he threw a hanging changeup. It was a bad pitch, but not an awful decision. If that pitch has the downward movement it usually does, Longoria swings over it.

Why wasn't he pitching away to Longoria? I know he has great oppo power, but at least force him to him one out that way.
Also, when does Nava abandon hitting right-handed?

Too early to pinch-hit for Drew, apparently.

Drew cannot hit lefties. That is all.

Not a strike at all.
Apparently Farrell is waving the white flag putting Clay back in.

I'd rather have Buchholz here than Workman or Dempster or Morales.
(Nice ninja-delete, Matt.)

Not a strike at all. Apparently Farrell is waving the white flag putting Clay back in. If Buchholz is back in, one reason may be that Farrell doesn't trust anyone outside of Uehara/Tazawa/Breslow, and he wants to try to get another inning out of Buch to try to see how the game goes. If the Sox score in the 6th or 7th, he goes for the throat. If they don't, probably someone else is in. Why burn the 3 big guys in a tie game. He's playing for time.

Buchholz back out there is highly questionable. Just waiting for him to make another mistake? I mean, if he gets through the inning unscathed, that's certainly helpful with saving the risk of Workman/Morales melting down, but still... And of course: 2 quick outs. EDIT: 3! Nice rebound inning. I'd rather have Buchholz here than Workman or Dempster or Morales. (Nice ninja-delete, Matt.) Sniped.

Quick analysis: Middlebrooks' at bat was telling. The ump called a strike on something he'd denied Clay a few times this game, a ball that was just barely outside the zone. The question becomes how a player like WMB ever develops discipline if his reputation precedes him and perhaps even guides the umpire's judgement on calls like that? Why bother holding back on pitches just out of the zone if you're not going to get them?
In lieu of a better way to call those balls and strikes, maybe it only happens on the way up in the minors, or over a much longer timeframe, one that allows the ump to gradually rework their opinion of your strikezone judgement. Difficult stuff.

Could Clay come up any smaller than he did tonight? He had a quality start still. So yes. We're tied, and one swing of the bat from being back in the lead.

Does TBS's PitchTrax use Pitch f/x like Gameday? Because I just noticed some huge discrepancies in the pitch plots between the two in Pedroia's AB (Gameday had them lower and more inside).
Well, a quick google search indicates that they both indeed use Sportsvision's Pitch f/x. What gives?

Maybe one uses the front of the strike zone and the other uses the middle?

Give TB credit -- with their backs to the wall, they've come out and played a lot more stubborn offensive baseball, at least, tonight, though their 6th was sort of a givaway. But they worked Buchholz hard the previous two innings. Is it just me, or does Buchholz seem to pitch just like Dennis Eckersley did? I see a lot of Eck in him.

Agreed. If he was just going to see Rodriguez/DeJesus and Zobrist, I'd have rather gone with Morales.

If Farrell is planning to use Uehara for two full I have no problem with it. Otherwise I agree - they need nine outs, using Breslow only for one of them is a mistake.

Inexcusable that Salty didn't block that. That's Lavarnway-level stabbing at the ball instead of blocking it there.
