Because writing someone off based on 101 PAs is dumb, and he's as worthy of continued evaluation as most of their other young players. Anyhow, most of the PAs he gets are from giving someone a day off (usually Bradley or Nava or Middlebrooks). I am not writing Holt off by any means. I think he is useful as a utility guy or someone who might be able to play for a week or two due to injuries. I just don't see him as an every day player on a team which has aspirations of making the playoffs. Well, the 2014 Boston Red Sox certainly don't have playoff aspirations, and it's still unclear exactly how good Holt is (seeing as he only has 527 career major league PAs), so they're using the rest of the season to evaluate him. That seems like a reasonable approach.

Anyone think Mujica could get waiver traded? Mujica was a very good reliever in the past, and has a chance to be so again. Not sure why we'd give up on that while his value is down and he's controlled for one more year.

So, did Cespedes really tell the Sox he doesn't want to play RF? Is he worried that RF in Fenway is where fast outfielders go to die/get hurt? Cause it certainly seems that way (see Nixon, Drew, Victorino). I think the Sox a) ought to fix some of the walls out there so they've got a bit more give, and b) ought to try him in RF so they know if they need one in the off-season.

If not, they should find another trade, Then again, they believed that Bradley and Xander could just step in and perform well, when it is clear to many that they were wanting. As far as Holt, he is a keeper.

Too early to say definitively but I'm wondering if Ranaudo has hit his innings wall. Last year there was a clear difference between the Ranaudo we saw before and after early June. This is now the second start in a row that I've seen a different Ranaudo than I was seeing earlier. The main differences in both games was that he wasn't hitting the catchers mitt in spite of throwing strikes, was high all day instead of occasionally and, his curve seems to have lost some of it's sharp bite.
The next few starts in Pawtucket should be interesting.

I do not know if ranaudo has hit the innings wall, but I do know that today was a good day to learn from his mistake pitches.
Glad the offense woke up and plated enough runs to eek out a tough road win.

You can check by clicking on Ranaudo's name on the prospect ranking list or the team rosters (hint, hint), but Ranaudo has pitched less this year than last, so he is not anywhere near his innings limit.

I wasn't referring to an inning limit. Last year, look at his splits, at about June 1st his effectiveness went down dramatically, night and day differences. That made sense because of the limited innings in 2012. I'm talking about arm strength and the last two outings I saw, he looked more like the last half of last year than the first part of this year. If it is the case, it's a full two months later than it started last year.
I'm just saying we will need a few more games to see where this goes, too early to make any judgements, it also wouldn't be unusual for a young pitcher to have a few games where he was off a bit. I'm pretty sure that they aren't going to limit his innings at all. Pitching will strengthen his arm for next year. There isn't a lot of mileage on that arm.
LOL, read the context of the two posts (hint, hint).

Ok, I understand your point - I apologize for my lack of reading comprehension. I don't buy into it at all, though. Seems like you are making excuses, whereas the likelihood is that it is just part of the natural adjustments in the game.

WRT Holt, seems to me that he's already proved to be an incredibly versatile utility player. Even if he struggles offensively the remainder of the season, the worst that can be said is that he may be a Merloni-type player who can be overexposed. But even then, he has more defensive versatility than Lou had.
If he can get a second offensive wind, it might indicate that he could be a regular somewhere -- but probably not in Boston.
