Tough competition for the 7-spot in the order.
Any chance Workman will be moved back?

Speaking of which, since you made this post, Brock Holt is rocking a 40 wRC+. Heh, well, I was on vacation and not watching the games. I'm sure he'll be back to his old self in no time now. More seriously, I never saw Holt as a true-talent 120 wRC+ hitter, but I do think he is closer to starting 2B level than to utility INF level.

It looks like we got 2 cheap, very controllable relievers in that deal. I'm ok with that.

ha. I was doomed when they were realistically eliminated before the trade deadline. But I'm glad it worked out that way for many reasons, assuming they weren't going to make the playoffs anyway.

To be fair, I think Peavy and Doubront would have been gone even had they stayed in contention a little longer, which is why I was so confident in making that bet.

Farrell announced Ranaudo starting tomorrow. Escobar down. Hope Anthony gets a run of starts here to see what he can do.

Should any of the kids really struggle; Rubby, Webster or Ranaudo. Kelly should finish ok. Or, if Clay breaks down.

If Ranaudo is starting tomorrow, wouldn't it make sense to leave Escobar up as depth until tomorrow?

Workman fills that role.

Why not just go to a six man rotation, it would give Escobar also an opportunity to get some experience and see what he can do for us next season. I really believe, that some of the young guys will be traded in the off season to make a splash.

Let Escobar do well in Pawtucket first. He hasn't yet. Reward those who do first.

I guess my point is there is no reason to make the move today as opposed to tomorrow. Let's say we have another 19 inning game, we would be happy to have Escobar on the roster rather than the pitcher who is starting tomorrow. 0 chance they put Ranaudo in the game tonight if he is pitching tomorrow.

I think they want Escobar to make his next Pawtucket start. With Rubby going deep on Sunday and a day off yesterday, the bullpen is probably OK. No reason to make him travel with the team from Anaheim to Cincy for one day when it's unlikely he'd pitch.
FWIW, Farrell said Workman is just getting skipped this turn through the rotation in that SiriusXM spot, so he's not moving quite yet. That said, if we're in "audition for 2015" mode, seeing what Workman can do in relief at this point may qualify there. If he's lights out, that's one fewer bullpen acquisition potentially.

Will you (or the Sox) really put any stock at all in the results of a two-month bullpen audition? Don't we have enough scouting data on how Workman throws in relief vs. the rotation, and enough data total to see how he handles MLB competition?

Workman pitched so well out of the Pen in the playoffs last year, isn't that enough to warrant that Workman can get the job down? Those we're pressure situations and he handled it like a veteran pitcher

Don't we have enough scouting data on how Workman throws in relief vs. the rotation, and enough data total to see how he handles MLB competition? Is there anything wrong with acquiring MORE data though? He's only got 38.1 innings of MLB relief under his belt, including playoffs. And to be honest, if you go look at his relief split, it's not as good as you'd probably guess (was the case for me, to be sure). I'm just saying that, at this point, if they think that's how he contributes next year, then hey, let's do it now. There is certainly a counter-argument that they should see what he can do as a starter, for sure, but with the number of guys pushing up behind him, it may be time to just move him if they want to slot him into a late-inning role.
