It's 2015 and Jeff Francoeur is a starter in a Major league lineup! How's that even possible? I knew it's the Phillies but IT'S JEFF EFFIN' FRANCOEUR!!!!! Thanks.

This is actually somewhat interesting: Year | Bases empty K% | Bases empty BB% | Men on K% | Men on BB% | 2012 | 14.2% | 2.6% | 13.0% | 9.1% | 2013 | 21.7% | 4.0% | 15.6% | 8.3% | 2014 | 17.5% | 3.1% | 11.8% | 7.8% |
RISP numbers are even worse than overall men on numbers. Basically, Porcello has been pitching much worse with men on than with the bases empty. If better coaching / gamecalling could teach him to always pitch as well as he does with the bases empty, he could be pretty damn good.

You know what would help? A non-horrible lineup construction by Farrell.

Bogaerts swung through a 2-1 89 MPH fastball right down the middle. Not good. Are you worried that Bogaerts lacks the bat speed to get around on an 89 mph fastball?

You know what would help? A non-horrible lineup construction by Farrell. In case you didn't notice, the first 9 Red Sox all made outs in the batter's box. I'm not entirely sure which other order you would rather have had those outs in.

You know what would help? A non-horrible lineup construction by Farrell. That's bull****. I didn't know one hit and zero walks would've amounted to runs with a different line-up construction.

I'm not sure why a lot of you are hating so much on Harang. He's probably better than 3/5, or at least 2/5, of our rotation. Not that our rotation is the gold standard or anything, but still - he's above average.

So, who pinch hits when they bring in Diekman to face Nava?

There's nothing crueler in baseball than the line-drive double play.

No single swing and a miss is a problem; baseball players sometimes swing and miss pitches they should hit. Harang struck out eight tonight; he had lots of Sox hitters off balance. Through 65 or so PAs since the beginning of Spring Training Bogaerts has about an 11% K rate (and 14% BB rate). I don't know how meaningful those numbers are, but I think there are actually more reasons for optimism than pessimism at the moment.

Is there any valid reason not to pinch hit for Hanigan here?

OK Farrell just wants to get out of this weather ASAP... Brock Holt on deck rather than David Ortiz.
