Yeah, with Dowling he MAY have had a chance to stick if he could show something tomorrow night. The timing of this suggests that he would not have been available to even put up a fight for the roster spot.

Another interesting theory from Mike is that there might be something more than just injury and performance with Dowling's cut. Given the lack of depth and the fact that it cost the Pats more to cut Dowling than to keep him, Reiss speculates that this could be like the Leigh Bodden situation where the team and player disagree on how ready the player is to perform.

Benard is cut. Down to 72 (19 to go).
EDIT: Patriots released ten players today: TE Jake Ballard, DE Marcus Benard, TE Daniel Fells, WR Johnathan Haggerty, LB Mike Rivera, OL Luke Patterson, FB Ben Bartholomew, DL Gilbert Peña, OL Matt Stankiewitch and DL Scott Vallone.
EDIT: Also unofficial word that Morris was cut.

I am still surprised both Fells and Ballard got cut, seems either would have been more useful than Tebow. Other players I could see making the roster over Tebow: Bequette, Tarpinian, A. Wilson, waiver-wire OL.

EDIT: Tebow-time is over. 9 to go.
EDIT #2: Marcus Forston cut. 8 to go. First big surprise.
EDIT #3: Zoltan Mesko and George Winn cut. 6 to go. Mesko is another surprise. Right now there are 11 rookies (4 undrafted) projected to make the 53-man roster.
EDIT #4: Justin Francis, Ja'Gared Davis and Kannoris Davis cut. 3 to go. Francis is a surprise.
EDIT #5: Josh Kline and Justin Green cut. 1 to go.

Inclined to agree with the popular theory that Fells could come back in Week 2 or so for a cheaper deal. Money always an issue, see, e.g., Zoltan.

Quentin Sims is the final cut for today. Given the DL/DE/TE cuts, there should be some further reshuffling at the bottom of the roster.
