This is still a good trade for the Celtics. However, the Padres were not honest with the Red Sox and the Padres provided no additional compensation. The Celtics were transparent with the Cavs and it cost the Celtics an additional pick. Strange? There is a reason the Cavs have he right to do their own physical. It's entirely possible the Celtics were upfront with everything and shared everything and then the Cavs doctors after examining him felt he was going to be out longer than expected based off of the Celtics info. That's all plausible.

I'm not sure what would have been worse, Cleveland getting nothing else (which would lend credibility to the idea they were just "staying open for business") or Cleveland going through all of this over a 2nd rounder (in 2020, no less). Maybe the new GM was just trying to show the rest of the league that he was no pushover. But for the insignificant draft pick I do not believe that he accomplished anything but the idea that he may be a butthead.

FWIW
Kevin O'Connor (the Ringer) reporting that several sources told him that Gilbert was, indeed, driving this.

How little ultimately changed hands shows what BS this was from the start. Going into their final season with Lebron, they feel like there are legit concerns over Isaiah's health and ability to contribute this year, but they are willing to do the deal anyway for a 2nd round pick three years from now? Riiiiiight.
This was a hostage situation from the beginning that Danny didm't cave on.
