Looks like Cole Milam, a RHP reliever from Southern Illinois U Evanston signed with the Sox. 6’4 250. Had a rough 2019 but was better in sss 2020...huge strikeout numbers and huge walk totals. Guessing he throws hard given size And k numbers but can’t find anything on stuff but control is obviously the big issue. 38 innings over 2019 and abbreviated 2020 with 34 Walks and 71 Ks, 30 hits www.siuecougars.com/sports/m-basebl/2019-20/players/colemilamc5xx?view=career&pos=p

The Royals are finding access to the BA's top 500 like no other team right now. They've signed 6 guys according to BA's tracker, 5 are in BA's top 500 and the other made their list of top 25 seniors. Plus one of their signings is Kale Emshoff...I want to say he's a consensus top 200 type.

Is it safe to say that the draft will never return to 40 rounds? Obviously the current situation made this year different but I will really miss the 40 round draft if its gone. If they cut the minor leagues back a bit I can see them settling at 25-30. And you will probably find nary a scouting director who'd be upset about that. 40 rounds was too long. Arguably better for the players too. Is a Dom D'Alessandro type better off being drafted and forced to sign with that one team for $10k or being a free agent and having, potentially, multiple options? One of the top HS players that didn't get drafted, Harold Coll, decided to do a PG year and reclassify into the 2021 class. Will be interesting to see if other HS guys do this. A tad surprising since he is 18 & 10 months, older than most. In theory, his being old makes this strategy make more sense. This way he signs at 19 going on 20 rather than 21 going on 22. The Royals are finding access to the BA's top 500 like no other team right now. They've signed 6 guys according to BA's tracker, 5 are in BA's top 500 and the other made their list of top 25 seniors. Wait, so you're saying that paying your players and treating them like humans might mean they are more inclined to join your organization? Get outta town!

How much money did teams really save by releasing minor league players as well as only agreeing to pay them for part of 2020? The Royals, Twins, Astros and Reds agreed to pay their minor league players for all of 2020. Seems like a missed opportunity for the Red Sox, among other teams, to be penny wise and pound foolish. www.si.com/mlb/2020/05/30/twins-royals-astros-reds-pay-minor-league-players-mlb#:~:text=With%20teams%20across%20the%20league,Heyman%20and%20ESPN's%20Jeff%20Passan.

Red Sox have committed to paying their minor leaguers through the end of the season: boston.cbslocal.com/2020/05/29/red-sox-release-22-minor-leaguers-mlb-coronavirus-covid-19/However, Royals had also committed to not release any of their minor league players, something I don't think any of the other clubs also did.

And as for the players they released, they were not one of the teams that released players above and beyond what would be typical. I know 22 guys seems like a lot, but over the course of a spring training, that's about what you'd expect. Some teams cut something like 60 guys.

Van Belle was BA's 16th rank available senior.
16. Brian Van Belle, RHP, Miami: Van Belle’s rotation-mates Chris McMahon and Slade Cecconi are projected to be drafted in the top two rounds. Van Belle can’t match their pure stuff and upside, but he was the ace of the Hurricanes’ staff and can get his fastball into the low 90s.

Hold the Red Sox beer... Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats The Sox save signed St Thomas University starter Merfy Andrew. He struck out 42 in 25 innings this season while throwing 96-101 mph to go along with a hard slider.

Kinda shocked if the Red Sox have signed more than any other team and yet the total is still rather low. In a normal year they bring in 30 or more guys usually. The fact you can get guys for just $20,000 I thought would mean you bring in more guys. Are that many more guys going to College or going back for their senior year? Fifteen less guys per team is a lot of players.

The question I had is how many of those 30 are usually org guys who are signed to fill in rosters (especially at the 1/2 season leagues). If there is no season this year and MILB contraction next, do you need to sign a bunch of players to just sit? Or do you identify a few, sign them and then see how things shake out next year when you know the "new structure" of MILB and maybe have a more "normal" draft?

Some kudos are in order for Dante Riccardi for getting a draft pick and 2 signings (I'm sure an assist goes to Hargett on that too). The great Willie Romay w 3, and a half signings (Mateo the Longwood signings played summer ball for Boca). 2 from PR and Edgar Perez, 2 from the northeast Ray Fagnant areas, so really a nice determined, and aggressive effort from the Red Sox scouting staff to not just punt on the draft when the uncertainty hit. I like the balance of this group too, I think its smart to add a number of power arms that could progress as bullpen guys, but then add Van Belle a pitch-ability/control type guy that you can give innings to and develop. Garcia has notable power, McKenzie has plus speed, then Nunez-Rijo and Montero are sort of a July 2-esque signing with a more polish.

I wonder if new professional scout and former Longwood player Kyri Washington had anything to do with the scouting of this guy. Longwood pipeline running strong in the system! Doubtful. As a pro scout his coverage doesn't include amateurs, and he wouldn't have had any overlap. At most he might've passed along a tip. I believe this would be the first signing for Kirk Fredriksson since joining the Red Sox. He took part of Reed Gragnani's area and part of Pat Portugal's area As of the time of this post, more signed undrafted players than any other MLB team according to Baseball America: Jacinto Arredondo, RHP, Tampa | Link Jordan DiValerio, RHP, Saint Joseph's Graham Hoffman, RHP, South Florida Jake MacKenzie, INF, Fordham Cole Milam, RHP, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Henry Nunez-Rijo, RHP, Puerto Rico High, Guaynabo, P.R.
