You mean 2018 when Mookie had a 10.6 bWAR? (Also when they had Price and Porcello?) First, this is a bit different a point. You said guys like Shawaryn were lower in the prospect list because of young stars. The guys you name aren’t blocking him... indeed we’ve moved from pitchers to hitters, so essentially a new topic. Second, it is fair to say Nunez for Peraza is a push. Granted. Chavis for Holt is a downgrade, but hardly relevant to issues of contending. Now... Pillar (career 88 OPS+) and Verdugo to Betts? Night and day. So I think Verdugo is nothing? Nope. I suspect he could be a .300 hitter. I am also pretty confident that he will hit with average-ish power, not run much, be an ok fielder. That is a fine albeit small piece to a puzzle, but it means you need someone else to pick up a lot of slack. He looks to be capable of being what Beni was his first few years with maybe a tick leas power and less speed. It is not nothing but it is a HUGE downgrade. And this far, he has looked about as bad as Beni, for all the heat the latter gets. I don’t think my position should be that controversial: this team is far worse than it was even last year, and it doesn’t seem to gave any game changing prospects ready for the next year and a half. That year Nunez, Devers and Vazquez were combined -2.3 bwar. You don't have to replace Betts one for one. It's about the group of players combined. You know Devers isn't close to a -.1 bwar player, Vazquez doesn't look like a -1.0 bwar player now. Umm Shawaryn? I said that when years ago? I'm making a point about our lineup. Yet yeah I'd like to see Shawaryn come up, he can't be any worse. Yet it's a new GM and he didn't draft him like DD did. Well besides Trout every player is a downgrade. Yet Verdugo is a very good young player, if he can develop into a 3-4 bwar player he's a huge building block. Let's remember I mentioned that 2018 team because it was the best I've seen in my lifetime, not a baseline for a good team. I think you need to look at that. Betts wasn't close to a ten bwar guy year in and year out. I think we have talent that can help starting next year. We lost Sale to TJ and ERod to Covid on what was already a weak spot. So you can't look at this team and think it equals next year's team or the future. This is worst case type stuff with pitching. Sorry, I conflated you with another poster on Shawaryn. I might not totally disagree, but I have serious doubts: Sale needs to rebound, and even back when healthy he was not exactly a workhorse. ERod needs to repeat last season. Then... yikes. JDM needs not to opt out (probably won’t), and needs not to get old. They need a new first baseman, second baseman, and at least one outfielder who can hit better than anyone they have. So, wish list with no one in the system who will fill these spots next year: 2-3 starting pitchers 1B 2B Offensive outfielder Most of the bullpen This assumes a healthy Sale and ERod, a Devers rebound, a Beni rebound, Verdugo can reproduce his half season, CVaz carries on.... etc.

Oh how quickly we forget. A bowl of cold linguine would have been a massive upgrade on Nunez. Peraza has already compiled 2.8 bWAR more than Nunez did in '18 and '19 combined. (He has compiled 0.0 fWAR.) Peraza is at -0.3 bWAR this year. I called it a push because they both suck, and neither would be relied on to anything major. I am not going to look at a team and say the needle has been significantly moved by the exchange of a utility guy.

X !!! Will be great when he finishes his career with another team because we don't hand out 10 year / market value contracts.

I think the great plays on D might actually help his hitting. He seemed like he needed a boost of confidence and you could tell in his body language after those plays

I think I started reading this site when the Bogaerts brothers were just low minor-league dreams, and I remember X being described as a long way off but already special. That he made it all the way through that development and lived up to the highest expectations is so awesome and is what makes it so much fun to talk about the guys at those low levels. He better never wear a different uniform.

I love X and I love that he loves being here. Hard not to root for a great player that says he wants to be here..... as opposed to Betts

He didn’t bother me like he did other people. I worry about guys who the team really relies on. I don’t sweat the small stuff.

Are we feeling good with a one-run lead and 2 innings to go? Is Workman available? I am assuming.

He reminds me of Dice-K pitching. Maybe the hitter version is apropos?

When did Matt Barnes become Matthew Barnes?

Why are we pitching around the #9 hitter? Come on Barnes. Can't get 2 outs and then get lazy.

Team is frustrating on multiple levels every night. There are positives in every game but the negatives always seem to overcome any positives. Sucks. Just let the LT reset and get a good pick and shed some contracts and rebuild the farm

The Nunez Conundrum. it has been studied at length and there is no clear cut answer. The defensive play to beat the Yankees was worth it all the angst to me.
