Probably doesn’t hurt that they’re playing Miami in week 1 They’ve added FB Ben Mason and QB Garrett Gilbert to the practice squad Honestly kinda love both moves. Especially Mason I really like the Ben Mason move, nice fullback blocking depth. Gilbert is just a body for me. If Mac Jones gets injured this team has to make a trade. Mason allegedly can also play TE which would them allow to go with only 3 TEs on the active squad

We've been waiting a long time for that it class. The difference making draft class. You know the one that changes a franchise direction. 2019 got you excited, yet Harry and Williams have been disappointments, Cajuste is just now healthy and Stidham looks more like a backup. You might have the most impactful draft class since 2010 with McCourty, Gronk, Spikes, Hernandez and Mesko. They desperately need it, they also need last years to give them high end players. Onwenu, looks there - need Uche and Duggar to make huge leaps. Looks promising. It’s time to stack a few drafts together I'm going to slightly disagree, given last year with Covid and limited camp, I'd say more like your normal jump, yet I'll admit it might look like a huge jump given how long it took them to get up to speed last year. I'd say Williams making a massive jump is maybe the most important part for the team and he doesn't even have to be impactful. He just needs to be average or better. If he sucks it's going to have this big domino effect that will really hurt your flexibility. Yet reports say he's stepped up and looks good. If that happens you basically have three good drafts in a row. I wouldn't sleep on Asiasi either. He was a good blocker last year and looked darn good with Mac Jones throwing him the ball last game. Everyone is sleeping on him because we signed two TEs, yet injuries are going to happen at TE. Biggest thing is Mac Jones just finds the open guys, he can actually use our weapons. I wouldn't be surprised if Mac Jones makes Harry look half way decent later in the season. Cam Newton just didn't have the accuracy or ability to go through all his reads consistently.

I’ll add 2 things: 1. Asiasi was partially slept on because he missed the start of camp with COVID and got off to a slow start. 2. Cam didn’t just not have the accuracy, he didn’t have the confidence to not throw to a wide open guy. Throwing a guy open wasn’t in his vocabulary, at least consistently.

You can't throw a guy open or place the ball perfectly when you can’t make simple 5-10 yard passes to wide open players and end up bouncing the football off the ground multiple times every game. Cam Newton just can't maintain his mechanics in the pocket and didn't fit our offense.

He did that in Carolina, was constantly overthrowing guys. They tried drafting larger receivers to compensate, but that still did not fix the issues.

I know Cam was bad last season but the way you guys are talking he was epically bad, like sub 50% completion bad. At 65.76% he wasn't that bad and he actually had some very good games. I don't want to open up that can of worms again and yes he was very bad overall but at almost 66% you can't destroy him to that extent. I know the mechanics have been off ever since his shoulder surgery and it looked terrible but he gave the Pats his best and it just isn't there anymore.
On a brighter note I am going to predict that the Tom Brady comparisons are going to be unavoidable this year with Mac. His strengths are exactly what made TB who he is. Reading the D and taking what the D gives him, not being greedy and making bad decisions with the ball. His accuracy also which I mean really what he did a few weeks ago against the Giants in practice and what he did last year at Bama, 77% completion rate. Those numbers are ridiculous no matter how good your WRs are. And the perfect throws he makes on slants that let the receiver catch it in stride are probably the most important throws to hit on with a great running game.
I heard Charlie Weis talking about Mac at Alabama, where I guess he spent a lot of time, and he was effusive about him. Not just the playing but how much of a leader he was, he mentioned how all the other players no matter who looked to Mac as the man. That is a lot of great first rd players and they all put him as the top dog. This Weis talking.
I think the Pats are going to get right back on the trend of 12+ win seasons for the foreseeable future. And speaking of the draft I strongly feel that last years draft is going to be considered a great one as time goes by. Onwenu is already there but Uche, Duggers and Asiasi will be vary good and I haven't given up on Jennings either. This team is going to win a lot more than the 9.5 over under Vegas has them at.
Have a good Labor Day weekend all.

If Mac Jones attempts the passes that Cam Newton did last year he might have an 80% completion percentage. Go look at the stats and ask where did that come from? It was dump downs to the RBs, wide open Meyer throws and a few wide open Izzo throws. I think these stats tell you more about how bad Newton was last year, 30th in yards, 31st in TDs, 31st in attempts with 31 sacks and a 7.8% sack rate. If Cam Newton was good and that completion percentage makes it seem he was, why didn't they attempt more passes? Why would you keep running on clear passing plays on third down?
Newton attempted 368 passes in 15 games, his career low outside of two games in 2019 was 448 in 14 games. His attempts 517, 485, 473, 448, 495, 510, 492, 471 and 368 last year. The reason he attempted so few passes was because he sucked.

Pretty much the same as many others who were considered good. Heck Roethlisburger was 6.3 and he still has a job.

You’re cherry picking a few stats - the way they played tells you everything you need to know. They couldn’t even run hurry up because he wasn’t capable. The attempts as UMASS points out is key. His QBR was 39.4, which is brutal. You’re talking close to worst in the league in any given year bad. Worse than Bortles and Drew Lock and Trubusky and anyone else you probably know the name of. He was brutal.

As I have said, yes he was bad I watched every game also and he certainly didn't pass the eye test. But completion % and average/attempt are not cherry picking and BB resigned him and was ready to play him again right? I completely realize he wasn't good but if he was as bad as you are making him out to be then you are saying BB was an idiot for bringing him back with an expectation of playing him. I thought their was an outside chance he could have been better this year but I am glad they are going with the kid.

I think they expected him to be better and didn’t have other options they liked materialize outside the draft at a cost they liked. Bill was able to win 7 games with lousy Cam w/ no weapons and a lousy D. He figured he could make the playoffs with an average Cam, solid weapons and a great D. Remember, they also paid him very little and it was prior to FA.

Pretty much the same as many others who were considered good. Heck Roethlisburger was 6.3 and he still has a job. Ben also played 15 games, 608 passing attempts and a massive difference was only 13 sacks and a 2.1% sack rate, 33 TDs. Pittsburgh couldn't run and used short passing plays to move the ball. It's why Pittsburgh drafted a RB in the first round. Comparing those two is like comparing 3 point percentage with Kemba Walker and Semi. The 3 point percentage tells you nothing because of the difference in attempts. Ben was darn good last year, teams adjusted and the inability to run really hurt them. Newtons best passes all year were to Meyers and he was almost always wide open. Why? Part of it is that Meyers is great at reading coverage, finding the weak spots as a former QB. Yet the biggest part was teams stacking the line, trying to stop the run and daring Newton to throw. It worked perfectly because Newton couldn't take advantage minus a few nice throws to Meyers. Seriously Cam Newtons accuracy was worse than Drew Bledsoe when he struggle to get above 60%. His pocket presence is just horrible, he's the complete opposite of Brady and he's a dual threat guy. So many sacks because he can't read the D well. He wasn't good and just isn't a fit for our offense. He's a great backup QB, yet one that requires a different offense than most QBs. So he’s not even ideal in that role. Likely has to wait for a Dak type injury on a team with no backups. I will also say I loved his work ethic and leadership. He played and practiced hard, gave it his all. Everyone seems to love him. So has nothing to do with Cam Newton the person, yet Newton the QB just doesn't fit our offense.

We are lucky Will Fuller is suspended and Preston Wilson is on the PUP list. Even then you have Parker, Waddle, Gesicki, Smythe was decent as a second TE good blocker and they got Hunter Long who I liked as a receiver at TE. When they get Fuller/Preston and if the rookies Waddle and Hunter are good watch out.
You just wonder what the losses on D do to that unit. Still kinda shocked they released Van Noy. Van Noy and Lawson had 28 put of their 99 QB hits. Van Now was third in tackles, third in PD, third in sacks and third in FF, it was a typical Van Noy year where he did a little bit of everything and you can’t easily replace that versatility and production.
