Only abuse is Maddon thinking a mohawk is the solution to turning around a season where you have 2 of the best players in baseball history at your disposal. If not for a mid-game rain delay in the WS, Maddon has a totally different managerial history He had 2 superstars and 23 mediocrities. That's not a team. That's on the GM, not the manager. Are you talking about the Angels or Red Sox.

Like I said, two superstars and 23 mediocrities which include a expensive injured 3b, a closer and a struggling OF prospect. That does not make for a good team. Trout and Ohtani kept them from losing 100 games. Again, not the fault of the manager. The Angel's haven't had a real team on almost a decade. No manager would succeed in those circumstances. The blame lays higher up, with past and current GMs.

IMHO Trout and Ohtani have kept the Angels from irrelevance in the soCal baseball market. Even in OC itself we see more Dodger hats and stuff than previously. The LA Times (a good paper with regional editions) is the natural home of the “boys in blue” (like the Globe-Sox). But they still covered the actual “native” and “local” LA Angels pretty well. This is increasingly difficult. The Halos have a lot to do to regain even a bit of parity.

I would not call this anything close to "abuse." The game has changed and there is a conversation to be had there. There was a philosophy disconnect here and clearly poor communication about what was expected, but idk about "abuse."

Maybe not abuse but where is the line between the front office and on field managment? When the front office is telling who can pitch then it seems way over the line. The manager should know best when he is dealing with the players on a daily basis. When someone gets a job you have to trust them with it or get rid of them.

Because managers have historically shown that they're capable of keeping their pitchers healthy? "I use my gut" doesn't feel like the best way to make sure a guy isn't getting overworked.

Its not like the analytical approach is all that great at preventing injuries either. At quick glance the Rays currently have
TJ Surgery: Brendan McKay, Shane Baz, Colby White, Andrew Kitteridge, Tyler Glasnow (just returned)
Oblique: Ryan Yarborough, Colin Poche

I just think it would lead to a divided clubhouse. Can`t imagine what it was like to have the front office guys sharing the coaches locker room.

I just think it would lead to a divided clubhouse. Can`t imagine what it was like to have the front office guys sharing the coaches locker room. Agree. The GM should hire somebody who basically shares the same philosophy, but should be hands off with the micromanaging. He or she has to be able to trust their manager to make the decisions, even if they don't agree with 100% of the moves because odds are they won't. I also think there's a mental factor that all the numbers on the world dont adewuately capture, something a manager's eye could see. At the end of the day if you can't trust the manager why have one? Just run things from the FO. Of course, watch how that goes over with the men at work. It becomes the arrogance factor swinging the other way. Used to be that the guys with the data were treated as egghead outsiders by neanderthal players and managers, but now the pendulum has swung so far the other way the arrogance can reside with the analytical FO who act like they know everything, which often isn't the case. Instead of getting the best of the data and scouting/technique decision making, only one element gets emphasized and it. An be detrimental. We will see if Bloom and Cora are indeed on the same page in 2023.

The right answer is probably that it really doesn't matter beyond the obvious stuff.

That's a beefy extension. I think I would prob just prefer going year to year. Are you really that excited to get his first FA year for $22 million guaranteed, six years from now?
At least they have the potential to save big on his arb years. If he keeps up his current level he'd be setting records going year to year.

Scott Effross TJS
Yankees are already down 0.6 WAR on that deal, as the prospect they gave up had an excellent 33 IP debut for the Cubs.

Can Correa do better than 9/240? That's what he'd need to get for it to have been worth turning down the Tigers' 10/275 offer last off-season.

God I want cancer destroyed. It got HOF closer Bruce Sutter as well at the age of 69. I remember 40 Octobers ago Sutter striking out Gorman Thomas to clinch the 1982 World Series for the Cardinals. Awful news for that young minor leaguer and for Sutter.

From MLBTradeRumors' Cardinals offseason preview: "The Cardinals have plenty of breathing room financially to rework Arenado’s deal if necessary. According to the Associated Press, the Rockies will owe the Cards $16MM next season regardless of Arenado’s opt-out decision, as agreed upon in the 2021 trade that sent him to St. Louis. Colorado would send an additional $5MM annually through 2025 if Arenado declines to opt out." Wait, the Rockies will give St. Louis $16 million dollars even if Arenado LEAVES? Was the front office guy who was supposed to read the fine print concussed?

Was the front office guy who was supposed to read the fine print concussed? He apparently deferred $20m of his 2021 salary when he got traded, so maybe it has to do with that, but yeah, that's kinda wild. It's not a buyout near as I can tell, which was my initial instinct.
