According to MiLB.com's gamecast of the WooSox game, Refsnyder is listed as being on the Worcester bench, FWIW. This is based on the roster, not on who is actually in the dugout. Not something to read into. Whitlock to IL with hip, Valdez recalled, Rob R up and Arauz DFA. Per Christopher Smith According to the site, Arauz has 2 options... but Refsnyder needs to be put on the 40.
Designating a player for assignment, which is what they did with Araúz, removes him from the 40-man roster.

I know this is about 2023, but the guy I'm really excited about is, at least, a couple years away. His name is Ceddanne Rafaela. Sure I love the top 4 or 5, but this guy is so intriguing. Just love that supplies outstanding defense and both short and center. He will, almost certainly, hit 20 plus homers and swipe 25 to 30 bases. And THAT is on top of him being so skilled and instinctive at two of the most important defensive positions on the field. I'm hoping, at mid-season, that Ceddanne gets promoted to Portland. He is my new blinky. Actually...the players in Portland all better start looking behind them. Love following Greenville and Salem this year. This kid, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, is the real deal. The way he is going, he may not be in Boston to start next year, but don't bet against him for showing up later in the season. He will be a top 100 player next season. When you can play defense like him, run like him, and NOW hit like him...you've got a winner! I believe he deserves to be in OUR top 10 right now.

I see where Rafaela was recently promoted to Portland. I had the chance to see him when Greenville visited the Winston-Salem Dash. I caught their 6/3 and 6/4 games. Rafaela made an outstanding diving catch very early in, I think, the Friday game. He really looked good. Fielding, running, hitting. Exciting player!

Some how I think they belive Rafaella will be the CF in the future and seeing the numbers that he's putting up it may become true.

The flip side to Kiké having a poor year is that you can resign him for one or two years at the same money.

The flip side to Kiké having a poor year is that you can resign him for one or two years at the same money. Can you though? When he signed for 2/14 he had a track record as a part-time utility guy with a subpar bat. Now he's established himself as a very strong defensive everyday CFer, which is pretty valuable if he can just get close to his career 99 wRC+. I would think he could get $10 million+ per year over 2 or 3 years.

My point is that if he hit like last year he would be lined up for 5/65 and a new zip code.

Biggest area of improvement for Rafaela is walking more IMO

Biggest area of improvement for Rafaela is walking more IMO Agreed, along with a good balanced diet that's low in trans fats and added sugars and high in fiber. Also cutting back on screen time, getting to bed at a reasonable hour, and only the occasional adult beverage.

The future of the Sox CF position is pretty locked in for me. It's JBJ for one more year at least (2023). The mutual option gets rarely picked up in this case or a deal gets worked out (2 year deal or something).
The more interesting question to me is the future of the LF position.
A lot of people seem to think Verdugo is a LF only because that's his best position and that's where he should stick. I think he could be a competent RF (good enough arm and range), but he hasn't stuck there for 2 years.
Meanwhile, Duran is a LF only by position. Arm is too weak for RF. Yet, he could prove to be just as valuable as Verdugo in LF. Less contact. More power. More speed.
Different player, but could be just as valuable in a different version.
Edit-
Who are you picking if the LF position comes to that-
Verdugo or Duran?
6 years with Duran, versus 2 expensive arbitration years left with Verdugo.

Now what?
I’m not really sure what they do in CF for 2023.

Brandon Nimmo should probably be the main offseason target, but he'll probably get a lot of attention given the relatively thin OF market, especially in center. There would also have to be durability concerns, so you'd need a backup plan besides "hope Duran learns how to catch a fly ball."
They could see what the price tag for Bryan Reynolds might be - the farm system is good enough that it could probably buy a guy like that without completely emptying the cupboard. However, Reynolds' defense is pretty bad by every metric I've seen, so you could end up with a situation where you're trotting out three left fielders again. It really matters how much of an outlier his 2021 season was at the plate, as he's about a 3 WAR guy right now, which is good but obviously very different from the 6 WAR he put up in 2021. Still, it'd worth seeing if ol' pal Cherington might be game for a deal given the dearth of options.
As it stands, I'd expect Hernandez to be the likeliest starter if the Sox think he's healthy. I do think Rafaela may get a chance in the second half next year if he can keep hitting high minors pitching, especially if injuries challenge their OF depth again.

Judge, Nimmo, maybe Kiké, maybe Kiermaier are your free agent options
Who knows what they could trade for. I'll say this - they're not going to be limited to all stars and above. They might just trade for some 1.5 WAR guy whose team doesn't value him enough and call it a day.

Kiermaier is a Tampa guy...so why do I expect him to wind up in CF for the Red Sox in 2023 for more money than I think he's going to be worth?

Trading for Yaz would be the most fun version of the "trade for an average-ish OF" plan, and it seems like he can be a passable center fielder defensively - a marked improvement over the Sox's current performance. (He'd also have some sneaky upside - if MLB does implement some sort of shift ban, that dramatically changes his offensive profile. He gets shifted on almost 80% of the time, but his wOBA on non-shifts is over .400.)

How about bellinger? Might be a non tender for the dodgers. Decent defensively and has bouce back potential offensively.

I'd be game for Bellinger at the right price, especially if you could platoon him to minimize his exposure to lefties, but he's making $17m this year. The Dodgers may non-tender him, but that $17m figure and MVP trophy may "anchor" any free agent negotiations, especially since $17m is reasonable for the ~2 WAR he's on track for. Somebody probably ponies up $20m+/year on the chance that he recaptures 2019. Just look at how Noah Syndergaard got $21m after losing two seasons to injury and having an average 2019. Maybe you take that chance if you strike out on Nimmo and any other good options, but I think it's more of a Plan C if the winter moves slowly and Bellinger is still available as spring training gets close.

Little known fact about Bellinger: he sucks.
I’d love for the “future” of CF not to be a) someone over 30 (to go with our additions of Hosmer and Story) and b) not someone whose best year was four years ago.
This may involve *gulp* a trade.

Yea if they want someone who they can reliably pencil in to CF as an upgrade the options are Brandon Nimmo or trade if you ask me. If they want to bring Belinger in as a depth piece or backup plan then sure a 1 year deal with incentives and I wouldn't complain but he's just as likely to produce the same as our OFers have this year than upgrade it.

Who are the trade options though? They arenât getting Rodriguez, Varsho, Robert, Carlson or Mullins because their teams would never move them. Of major league CFs having any success this year who will be under 30 for most of their next contract that leaves: Trent Grisham? I really think resigning Kiké is the best choice for center.

If Kiké is healthy and cheap, he’s fine. The upgrade can come in RF, then.

Beats me, we'll have to see this offseason if there's anyone attainable who would fit the bill. Sorry if I'm not too eager on penciling in Kiké as the opening day CF when he's missed months with a balky hip. If Kiké comes back I'd prefer it in the role they presumably originally signed him for which is super utility guy.

He'll be a short-term contact. Between that, the lack of a big financial commitment and the familiarity, I'd be surprised if Bloom doesn't sign him. He'd be a bridge until Rafaela is ready.
