This 60 man IL decision avoids any DFA moves for now if the Sox play it this way. Ort will probably make the 26 man roster surprisingly, unless there's a trade coming. The Rodriguez and Wyatt Mills injuries left a spot open for Ort. I have trouble believing Bloom will stay with Ort and not going fishing on the scrapheap for another reliever. They did that last year with some pitcher whose name escapes me. He wound up on the Twins when it was all said and done, I think. I hope you're right, but the lack of activity is telling me they're done for now. Ort is definitely the first one to get optioned or cut from the 40 man roster, but at the moment, all signs are him pointing to being here for the time being.

“Despite losing star shortstop Xander Bogaerts to San Diego, the roster gained 6.1 WAR over this offseason, tied for the fifth-largest improvement in MLB, according to FanGraphs.”
I like a lot of the move from this offseason…

Earlier it was suggested that Joely Rodriguez might go on the 60, and that might be a better idea if today they can grab a LHR they like on waivers. The extra unneeded downgrade from JR to such a guy for a week or two, if JR is ready before 60 days are up, would likely be less than the one from Mondesi to Chang, if Mondesi is ready in mid-May.
This would be in conjunction with waiving Ort (with a good chance that he clears).

Sox cleared a 40 man roster spot with the Faria DFA. 40 man roster down to 39.

Results have not been inspiring the last couple years, but there's zero RHP in Worcester having a decent year so I guess he improves the depth

Wasn’t sure whether to put this here or in the Mondesi acquisition thread, but this was the most recent update from the Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo: www.bostonherald.com/2023/05/13/red-sox-notebook-adalberto-mondesi-still-a-long-way-off-as-recovery-from-torn-acl-drags/amp/In short, Mondesi is still recovering from ACL surgery and isn’t near a return yet. I’m genuinely starting to wonder if he ever actually plays for team. Trevor Story is hitting and throwing down in Fort Myers - it’s not inconceivable he progresses at a similar timeframe to Mondesi at this point. I would imagine Kiké has one of the middle infield spots, and when Duvall comes back Duran ain’t going down to Worcester. Then you factor in having competent middle infield bench pieces like Arroyo, Chang (and maybe Pablo Reyes?) - who are they getting rid of this summer for Adalberto?

As usual, I'm sure the 'too many good players' problem will work itself out due to injury/ineffectiveness. But after Tapia/Chang/Reyes are let go, it will be interesting to see the choice between Mondesi and Refsnyder. Trading Kiké may also make sense if Mondesi/Story look good defensively.

How about Aquaman? I believe he he has a June 1 mobility opt-out. He certainly has the bat of a major leaguer. Too bad his catcher defense is so awful (apparently). Has he played any other positions? I'd love to keep him. Tapia too.

I think making him the backup C is a reasonable option. McGuire has the worst xwOBA in all of baseball, and second worst isn't even close. I think Alfaro's defensive shortcomings have been overstated - the SB and framing metrics are fine. He is really bad at keeping the ball in front of him.

If you can’t catch the ball can you really be a catcher though? Like we are talking about a guy who consistently leads baseball in passed balls while being a backup. It’s impressive.
I would like to see him hitting some lasers though. Tough call. Not like McGuire’s defense has been good this year

Because he's had a bad 84 PAs that are way outside of his career averages?
In fact he was well above average through the first 60 of those PAs, through May 6th (120 wRC+), so you're talking about ditching him over a bad 24 PAs - a guy who projects as at least a decent and cheap backup catcher that they control through 2025.

Yeah I'm pretty much out on McGuire. 18th percentile pop time and he looks totally hopeless at the plate. He's a good pitch framer but that's only going to count for 4 more months. Still, the last two arb years on McGuire make it a close call to me vs Alfaro.

Pitchers have to have confidence that they can throw their nastiest breaking pitches, especially with runners in scoring position. That was the Gary Sanchez problem that the 2018 Red Sox exploited big time.

Pitchers have to have confidence that they can throw their nastiest breaking pitches, especially with runners in scoring position.” !!!!! If a catcher can not catch, then he should not be a catcher. Likewise, if a SS can not make effective throws to first he should not be a SS!!! Please, would anyone tell me why Cora insists on using Hernandez at SS when Pedro Reyes is better defensively. It is not like Hernandez hits like Mike Trout….

I don't want to be too reductive, but if he could catch then he'd be catching somewhere. For me the only question with Alfaro is whether the bat has another gear once teams stop trying to make him catch, a la Mike Napoli. The Gary Sanchez comparison has been made, and people (understandably) LOVE to dump on Gary Sanchez. If the Red Sox brought in Sanchez as a catcher, you'd all be mad, right? Alfaro is very clearly worse at blocking the ball than Sanchez. It really doesn't matter if the other defensive skills are there. It's like having a center fielder and being like "his route efficiency and his arm is great, his only downside is that he doesn't catch fly balls very well." It's an unplayable problem.

Statcast has his blocking cost his team 15 runs against average over 408 games at catcher. So if he's you're every day catcher, his putrid pitch blocking is costing you like 5 runs a year. You don't get to round this up to infinite even if you can imagine some undemonstrated second order effect.
On the whole he's not a good defensive catcher and he's hit like .240/.280/.350 the last three years. Him settling for a premium minor league deal is not an outcome requiring a lot of explanation.

What do you do when your centerfielder doesn't have the greatest of route efficiency, doesn't have a great arm and doesn't catch fly balls very well but has minor league options left? Send him to AAA when Duvall is ready?

He also doesn’t have a plate approach. He struck out 35% of the time and walked 4% of the time last year. 32%/ 3.5% the year before. It’s arguably the worst in baseball over that time
He is “Catcher” Franchy and should remain the new mayor of Worcester with Franchy gone
Remember- every single team could have signed him as their backup catcher at the end of ST. They opted not to.

They opted not to. This year in AAA he has struck out in 22.5% of plate appearances. The last time he was in triple-AAA for an extended period of time (2017) he struck out 32.3% of the time. This could mean nothing, but it could show signs that he has improved his plate discipline. Along with a career-high oppo%, could easily see a team not happy with their backup catcher situation buying into the improvement and giving him a shot. He has plus-plus bat speed, plus sprint speed and was among the best MLB catchers at throwing out baserunners (non-Realmuto division). If it weren't for the MLB obsession of having an excess of relievers, he would be a nice 5th bench player. Either way, the raw talent is still intriguing.

Alfaro has opted out. Sox have 24 hours to promote him or lose him. He's a good hitter. Would he be worse than Schwarbs in the outfield? Or first base?

Cora basically said as much yesterday. I don't think it would make sense to make the 40-man move to get him on. As it is, Duvall (also needs 40-man move), Arroyo, and Chang are, in theory, close. They already have some tough roster decisions to make. Alfaro wouldn't survive them without a catcher injury.

Red Sox claimed RHP Zack Weiss off waivers from the Angels and optioned him to Worcester. Kluber to the 60-day.
