Not having a good year in AAA. Doesn't seem like he has much of a chance to be on the 40 through the offseason

Seems like a move where they basically had an open spot and said what the hell.
Relevantly, has 3 options including the one he burned this year.

I like having that attitude. The spots are resources, so it makes sense to put 'em to use.

94 mph heat, pitches off his slider (65% usage)

94 mph heat, pitches off his slider (65% usage) He looks like a candidate to attempt to pass through waivers within the next few weeks when his 40-man spot is needed for someone else. 94 mph is nice addition to AAA in hopes he can be an up/down arm.

30 AFL sleeper prospects -- 1 for each org. October 14th, 2021 "Orioles: Logan Gillaspie, RHP A product of Oxnard College in California, Gillaspie spent a year and a half toiling in independent ball before latching on with the Brewers in July 2018, but he was released following the 2019 season. The Orioles signed him in June of this year, and the hard-throwing reliever pitched well enough to earn a promotion from High-A to Double-A, striking out 11.2 while walking just 2.4 per nine over 41 2/3 combined innings." www.mlb.com/news/sleeper-prospects-in-arizona-fall-league-2021

I haven't wanted an 'a' to be an 'e' so bad since the Barenstain Bears.

At what point does Mata get bumped from the 40-man?…… Meaning that I am sure there will be room for Drohan, Wikelman, Perales, but is Mata still a better option than Dobbins, ERC, Gambrell, Bonaci, Bastardo, Guerrero?
Then if you decide Mata’s injury history and lack of on the field time are not good enough to make the 26-man (since he is out of options) do you try to find a trade partner even if the return is not very good…?

This isn't quite the comparison though. It's chance of losing one of those guys in Rule 5 versus Mata on waivers and whether that's worth it.

I agree 100% with what you said, I admit reading what I wrote, I stated two issues as one. Issue 1) Is it still likely Mata makes the 26 man in 2024? 2) If Mata’s ship has sailed do the Red Sox trade him to an Oakland or KC to free a 40-man spot whether it is for a FA, trade acquisition, or Rule 5. Getting back to 1), Mata is probably no worse than some of the guys the Red Sox tried this year, but the DL/IL is the only way to remove him from the 26 without a DFA at some point next year if he is not performing well. Would a trade in the winter preferably to a DFA? 2) If Mata’s lack of control is beyond what the Red Sox feel they can fix, why would you not trade him.

I can’t imagine Mata is much more valuable right now than Frank German was last winter. And German still had options.

2024 relievers
Safe: Kenley, Martin, Winck, Bernardino, Schreiber, Murphy, Robertson, (Houck), (Whitlock)
Borderline: Walter, Llovera (0 options), Jacques
Underdogs: Mata (0 options), Fernandez (rule 5 eligible), Ort, Kelly
Not gonna be on the 40: Mills (TJS), Gillespie, Weiss, Garza, Barraclough, Hagenman (rule 5 eligible)
imo

How can it be that Mata, having never pitched an inning in the major leagues, will be out of options? (Don't answer this; whatever arcane rules apply here, I will immediately forget them. I probably won't comprehend them in the first place.)

Yeah, the reason is that he HASN'T pitched in the major leagues. It's not arcane at all.
1) You get added to protect you from Rule 5 2) You don't pitch in the majors (usually injuries are involved) 3) 3 (or in some cases 4) years later, you are out of options.
Pretty simple. No minor league season in 2020 also makes things a bit weird these days.

Is it non-tender or waiver? If non-tender then the player is free to re-sign a minor league contract with the Red Sox vs being grabbed by another team… Is the that correct or am I mistaken?

The upside to waivers is that if the guy clears he's still under contract. If the player becomes a free agent then he's going to shop around. In recent years they've signed guys live Franchy and Yairo Muñoz to deals before putting them through waivers that made their MLB (and probably AAA) salary less palatable for a potential claiming team. For a guy like Barraclough or Garza, my guess is that they'd just take their chances on waivers.

jk, that's pretty straightforward actually. I always thought "options" meant "can be sent down to the minors without the waiver stuff" but I guess it actually means "is on the 40-man roster."

For a guy like Barraclough or Garza, my guess is that they'd just take their chances on waivers. This is just getting DFA’d, right? My understanding of the process is that the player is designated—which really just means removed from the 40-man—and then the team tries to find a trade partner. If they can’t find a trade, they waive the player, and if nobody claims the player they’re either outrighted, released from the team, or voluntarily assigned to the minors.
