It'd worth noting that Taylor also has injury questions marks. This could just be a case of both teams being willing to accept injury risk. I'm sure the doctors checked Mondesi out and think he's recovering fine, but they're also likely being realistic about how healthy he'll be this year.

It's legitimate to ask why the Royals valued Taylor over Mondesi if Mondesi's health isn't a concern given the relative value of a starting shortstop versus a middle reliever, but I think the answer for that is fairly straightforward. Mondesi will be a free agent after this season while Taylor under team control through 2025. The Royals aren't contending this year and Taylor is better positioned to help in the long-term, either as a contributor on their next competitive team or as a more broadly appealing trade asset. If Taylor bounces back, a solid lefty will always be valuable at the trade deadline, and the Royals can test that theory out 3 separate times. Mondesi's market would naturally be more limited just because teams in contention this summer might not need a middle infielder the way they always need pitching. I don't think it necessarily has to be that the Royals don't think Mondesi will recover, just that he doesn't necessarily serve their long-term plan as well as someone like Taylor.

Either they don’t want to pay him or didn’t have him in their plans is irrelevant.

That explains why they traded Mondesi, but it doesn't explain why they traded him for Taylor, which is what I was trying to address.

Not much on him. Nice stats, but he was a year old for the DSL which is usually a bad sign. He signed last year so at least he wasn't a repeater or anything. He wasn't one of six guys that got a writeup in an Athletic article on the Royals international class.
