Holt is not close to the player Zobrist is. Obviously I'm in favor of dealing him but I wouldn't get all excited just yet.

I wasn't expecting anything for Victorino but can someone tell me why I shouldn't think this guy is terrible?

I don't know if we're gonna have a separate thread for discussion but, why would CLE trade Carrasco? He's under control for four more years at extremely cheap salaries. Even if it's the dump Swisher/Bourn on somebody.

I know it doesn't really matter in the long run, but does Benintendi ride out the year in Lowell no matter what?

A sample of some of the hits allowed by Espinoza today:
Miguel Hernandez singles on a pop up to first baseman Jerry Downs Garrett Whitley singles on a ground ball to third baseman Roldani Baldwin.

The Dodgers wouldn't trade Urias for Betts. I think you're forgetting that the Dodgers are actually run by smart people now.

I predict by this time next year Moncada will be the #1 prospect in baseball.

If you consider that he'd make 20-30 million over the next 4 years without an extension, at 7/140 you're talking about $110 million for 3 years of free agency. C'mon. Sure, but if he stayed healthy he'd almost certainly be gone once he gets that through that first Arb year as Boras will advise to ride the last 2 years out. Why does that he mean he'd be gone, though? I agree there's little chance of him not getting to free agency, but are people under the impression that because the Red Sox didn't want to pay through the nose for Ellsbury and Lester's decline years that if they have a home grown, up the middle stud who's entering free agency at age 26 that they wouldn't give him an 8+ year deal? Or that they couldn't? That is exactly the kind of player you give massive, long term contracts to, and while LAD and NYY may technically have more money the Red Sox are not the Kansas City Royals, they wouldn't let him go without a fight.

I would wait 2 years and see what things look like then. Yeah let's wait until he he hits 25 home runs, then it really will take 250m. Anyway, this is all pretty moot because of the Boras factor. I can maybe see it getting to his last arb year and them just giving him a market rate deal. That said, I'm not really worried about them losing Xander, even if he gets to free agency. He is exactly the kind of player they would and should outbid other teams for with a long term contract, and all things being equal they will have the advantage of him liking it here and being the team that sign him as a kid. But again, let's see what he becomes. If this it what he is, that's a very good player, and he'll get a boatlad of money, but it's not superstar level. I still think he can and will be close to something like that, which changes the equation greatly. So for now, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy watching him play and hope that one day he suddenly drops Boras to be represented by his brother.

That's two balls in the air against Espinoza in three starts, reliability of GCL play-by-play notwithstanding.

That's getting a bit too close to "He has to be a good catcher, he went to Yale!" territory for me. I'm all for drawing attention to his story, it's great, but I don't think it has anything to do with his baseball ability, one way or the other. I mean, are we saying that a kid from Greenwich would be affected by blowing the game in his debut?

FWIW, if you want to get more giddy, Gammons quotes a "Red Sox official" on twitter as saying: "We haven't had anyone like Espinoza in decades."

First, I'm not going to get into a debate about FIP vs ERA. You seem like a smart person, so the only reason ERA represents "real results" to you is because you've been conditioned to think that way.
Second, nowhere did I say he's been good this year. I said he's on track to be *roughly* worth his contract. 12.5m doesn't buy you much these days in baseball. Justin Masterson got 10m and he was a total flyer. Is that a big disappointment? Sure. They should have gotten surplus value out of a guy like Porcello this year, not a mediocre to below average year where they might even be overpaying slightly. It also doesn't mean that he projects to be a bad pitcher going forward or that 20m a year for him is a joke like many people are going to make it out be.

Well, let's consider some reasons:
1. Possibly, our scouts disagree with that assessment. 2. You don't only sign players who you think have the potential to be superstars. Especially when you're talking about a minimal bonus. 3. They are limited in what they can spend. Would you rather they just say "why bother?" and forgo signing any IFAs for the next two years? 4. A fringe-average hit tool and average power can be a pretty damn good player, depending on the rest of his game.

BTW, he's only making 12.5m this year and is roughly on pace to be worth it. Statistical anomalies or not, I don't think a pitcher with an ERA over 6 heading into July can be considered "worth it" in any scenario. He can if you ignore ERA.

Contract is still fine. He's fine. .328 BABIP, 63.8 LOB% 14.8 HR/FB%. Give it a rest with the told-you-sos.
BTW, he's only making 12.5m this year and is roughly on pace to be worth it.

Bogaerts is the best player on this team, hands down. Or Mookie. Very encouraging how these two are progressing. Also says something about the rest of the team. It's still Pedroia. Mookie close, though.

Promoted to Portland.
In 254 PA in Salem his line was 294/331/450/781.
For comparison's sake, Mookie had 211 PA in Salem and Xander had 435.

Manuel Margot promoted to Portland, per the Portland Sea Dogs twitter account. Kinda surprising but definitely backs up the idea that his slump was injury related.
