Same. Give Yoshida some reps in LF while they’re @ Fenway. I'm actually wondering if Yoshida isn't adjusting to being a DH. I've heard some guys talk about how much they hate it. MLB career LF - 86 G - 369 PA - .308/.350/.480/.829 41/18 k/bb DH - 64 G - 264 PA - .253/.318/.373/.692 46/20 k/bb Wasn't he a a DH a lot in recent years in Japan?

Does the $4M buyout count as his 9th year guarantee or is it part of the 8 years of salary? It is part of the guaranteed $50M ($2M Bonus,$46M Salary,$4M Buyout). The Buyout is only payable if the Red Sox turn down the option year. Yeah I get that. If they turn down the option they pay him $4m. But does that make it 50/9 or 50/8 for the luxury tax?

AAV is just total guaranteed salary divided by years, plus adjustments for salary deferrals. Signing bonus gets added to the salary pile like everything else. Does the $4M buyout count as his 9th year guarantee or is it part of the 8 years of salary?

Romy has played 417 MLB innings at 2B in his career, like 85 in the OF, and less than 50 at other infield spots. Are we about to see a double L/R middle-infield platoon until they figure what they want do with Rafaela (or when Grissom returns?) That would be uh… something. Vs R - SS Hamilton 2B Valdez Vs L - SS Reyes 2B Romy Just a bummer that Bobby went from a fun if very flawed player to just unplayable. You’d like to think if you replayed his career over again there’s a universe where he’s an effective bench or platoon guy, but it just never clicked after 2021. It is very difficult to stay sharp with limited playing time, which is why it frustrates me so much that people are always so ready to move Refsnyder for someone with more perceived upside. Dalbec is an easy guy to like - good work ethic, good teammate, all of that stuff. It stinks that it hasn't worked out for him, but it's really hard to see him getting another chance in Boston and equally hard to see it working. Since the start of 2021, he's hit just .225/.287/.427 - and what's even more difficult is that almost all of that production came inside of a 32-game stretch from 8/11/21 to 9/21/21 where he hit .333/.434/.814 in 118 PA. Outside of that stretch, he's hit .209/.265/.370 with 281 strikeouts in 690 PA. The flaws have always been there, but major league pitchers have also largely succeeded in limiting his power production, which is really what's made him so ineffective. And remember, after that hot streak in 2021, he went 2 for 21 with 2 hr, 0 BB and 10 k for the rest of the season, then in the post-season Dalbec went 0 for 12 with 0 BB and 5 Ks. Amazing hot streak following by an amazing cold streak.

This is with respect. But when we win in 2004 American pie was not the song. I stop myself there. Weird choice. The day the music died?

Romy Gonzalez up: Physical Description: Medium, athletic frame. Still has some room to add strength to his upper half even in his late 20s. Hit: Starts in a closed stance with hands held high. High toe tap. Smooth upward swing path. Swing can get long at times. Above-average hands, quick bat. Barrels up well but chases and whiffs at high rates. Fringe-average overall bat tool. Power: Above-average over the fence power. Run: Above-average to better speed. Smart baserunner. Defense: Utility man capable of playing all outfield and all infield positions. Best suited for middle infield. Average to better defender. Solid instincts and baseball IQ. Arm: Fringe-average arm strength. Career Notes: Spent three seasons playing for the University of Miami. Cape Leaguer All-Star with Orleans in 2017. Spent five seasons in the White Sox system. Summation: Valuable up-and-down player due to defensive versality, speed, and power. Note: This page will be updated with a complete scouting report after the scouting team has seen the player in person. www.soxprospects.com/players/gonzalez-romy.htm

I am glad to see that even with a new cast in the FO, you continue to work from the assumption that they know something no other person or organization does. I call it the “Eric Van/Zach Godley Hypothesis.” I hope you are right, but I’d say, for example, a 30-year old who has never pitched in America and was dumped by the Rays hardly counts as reliable depth. Maybe he is the next Koji-level discovery… but I am nervous to test that. Dumped by the Rays like ... Cooper Criswell?
Did you get that I implied that Uwasawa would be either the #7 or #8 starter? How high is that bar?
Track record of so far with non-established pitchers:
Traded Luis Urías to the Seattle Mariners. Received Isaiah Campbell. Traded Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees. Received Richard Fitts (minors), Nicholas Judice (minors) and Greg Weissert. Traded Ryan Ammons (minors) to the New York Mets. Received Justin Slaten (minors). Signed Cooper Criswell as a free agent.
they know something no other person or organization does
No, no. The best organizations have figured out ways to make certain types of pitchers better. They have methodologies. It's not a mystic, guy-by-guy thing; it's "this guy fits the profile of guys who would benefit a lot from [X]."
[...] Is this similar to how the Red Sox must have figured out how to make Reese McGuire hit 337 .377 .500 .877 because that's what he did in 36 games for them in 2022? I seem to remember someone making that claim very confidently.

Forget Hamilton, Romy Gonzalez (second base) is off to the hottest season start. I wonder how his glove is. He's a super-utility guy who has played every position except 1B and C in 86 big league games (over 3 seasons with the White Sox). He's listed at 6'0", so there's no obvious reason why he couldn't try 1B. If they start working him out there in Worcester, that will be a telltale sign that Bobby's days are numbered. “Gonzalez, 27, caught Cora’s attention during spring training. “Besides versatility and being athletic, I think the offensive approach got better (during spring training),” Cora said. “We set some goals when he got there and he attacked it the right way. […]. I do believe halfway through camp he started using the big part of the field. He did yesterday. He hit two homers: one opposite field, one to center field. He hit the one (against) Minnesota (in spring training) to straight center. “He’s a good athlete,” Cora added. “He’s a big kid that can play good defense wherever we put him. He’s going to play first base a little bit down there, too. […] Gonzalez started at first base Friday and shortstop Saturday. www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/03/big-kid-on-red-sox-40-man-hit-2-hr-in-woosox-opener-has-alex-coras-eye.html

Apropos of nothing: I just walked past the beach house of Wayne Gomes, 2002 Red Sox pitcher, in Virginia.

Can’t say for sure but I don’t think it comes with control beyond what he signed with Tampa. I don’t think you get any extra control on 30 YO minor league free agents (or major league for that matter) beyond the contract you sign them to, no? I think he only got a 1 year deal. I’d happily admit I’m wrong but I just don’t see how he’d have control beyond this year Everyone is subject to the same service time rules, but players coming over from Japan typically negotiate a contract saying they'll be released at the end so they become a free agent. I can’t find it now but I did read somewhere that he will be a free agent after this season.

I like it when the podcast description says things like "Players discussed include Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Yoeilin Cespedes, Richard Fitts, Franklin Arias, Blake Wehunt and more!" Both makes me want to listen, and also helps when they say a guy's name once and then talk about him for five minutes, saying "he" and "his" and never saying his name again. FYI, this is pretty much an issue for any podcast. As a listener I have the same frustration sometimes, but note that it's very hard to get into the habit of saying a guy's name over and over again. The guys had no trouble on this one saying Cespedes Cespedes Cespedes and Bleis Bleis Bleis.

In recent years, I'm fairly sure it was Benintendi - made his minor league debut 7/3/15, major league debut 8/2/16. A few pitchers have been quicker - Abe Alvarez, Cla Meredith (neither benefitted from it). Heh, bishop mentioned Craig Hansen below, that was the obvious one I missed. That 2023 draft class is incredible (Teel included). Younger but not as fast: Jeff Suppan drafted in 1993, debuted in about June of 95 at age 20. Ken Brett was drafted in 1966 and appeared in one regular season game and two World Series games in 1967 at age 18.

Just for fun, here's five unheralded guys I'll be checking for in the morning box scores. [...] Honorable mention: Noah Song - Is there anyone reading this who won't be habitually checking his box scores? Judges 16:22 But the hair on Samson's head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
