Jon Heyman @jonheymancbs some see redsox as possible players for josh hamilton. john henry only said they have "flexibility'' cbsprt.co/XITwpC After listening to Ben Cherington today on WEEI, on quote he said really stuck out to me. He said something along the lines of "The free agent deals that have worked out tend to be those for middle of the order bats. The return on those investments seem to be the greatest."

Wow Keith Law just ripped the Marlins, said the Jays made out big time. Take that FWIW Keith Law is a douchebag, thinks he is the foremost authority on baseball and the only one qualified to talk about prospects

Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo Source: Red Sox made a push for both Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson, but Jays just blew Marlins away.

It is only a matter of time before Cherington does something big to add to the roster. You would have to think he is itching to build the roster they way he wants with all this money in hand. I do think he is going to make a trade this off-season that comes out of nowhere for a big named player noone thought was available.

I just get sick of this notion that all we have to do is play our kids and things will be fine. You know how the Sox built a dominant team? Straight cash homey$$$ Manny, Damon and Foulke were big time free agents. Schilling was a salary dump. Once we had a very good team. We were able to supplement them with prospects. There are bad signings. But, everyone has them. No GM is perfect. Since Theo was pretty bad at it. Let's not write1 that part of building a club off. Totally agree. This notion of rebuilding is all fine in good in a sport with a salary cap and instant rewards from draft picks. In baseball with no cap and in a market where the owners rake in money hand over fist, they should be one of the most competitive teams year in and year out. It all comes down to HOW they use the money. They Red Sox will never win the world series just sitting back and hoping all these young players develop. They are going to have to spend some money, make bold trades and then supplement the team with their young players. Like Blosser said they won world series, with two front of the rotations starters, two hall of famers in the middle of the order. We are all just anxious to see how Ben C. uses these assets and digs us out of this whole. One thing is for sure, the heat just got turned up on the Red Sox this off-season, as if it wasn't hot enough.

I bet all the citizens of Florida who just subsidized this stadium and were played yet again by ownership down there are thrilled. They should just contract the franchise and ban Jefferey Loria for life.

No matter how this trade shakes out.. it will define Alex Anthopolous' tenure with the Jays.. if they get better and make the playoffs, it will be worth it.
If they struggle, it will be a huge failure giving up big time prospects and adding massive money. But, if your the Blue Jays and it's tough to attract top free agents you gotta make bold trades.

Well, one thing is certain with this trade the Blue Jays are definitely better than the Red Sox... but at least we are talking to Jason Bay.

Another top of the rotation pitcher coming off the market to a division rival. Meanwhile, Ben C. is evaluating the roster.

Not the Ross we were expecting but a good sign nonetheless. I liked him when he was here and was disappointed Theo didn't hang on to him. I see him as a platoon with Saltalamacchia as Salty is better hitting from the left side. Lavarnway just didn't display the power we all expected last year at Pawtucket. And he was awful on his September recall with the big club. He definitely needs more experience at AAA. I wonder, too, whether this could be a precurser to a Lavarnway trade since, as has been pointed out, he is more in demand. Wonder how this affects the Sox pursuit of Napoli. I love the signing as well, and I was also wondering how this affects our interest in Napoli. This could be a case where the Red Sox end up completely rebuild the catching position by trading Salty and Lavarnway. The catching market is awful and the Red Sox have two assets. A Napoli/Ross combo, would allow Ross to play "more than a back-up". While at the same time getting some prospects for Salty who I don't think fits with the direction of the club due to poor OBP and high K rate. Also, Rosenthal reported the deal is 2/6.2

Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal Ross will be “more than a backup but not a starter” for #RedSox, source says. Team could move Salty or Lavarnway. Plans unclear.

Career caught stealing % of 39 and a 44% caught stealing % last year. It's been a huge weakness for this team, very underrated player.

Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal Sources: Free-agent catcher David Ross agrees to two-year deal with #RedSox, pending physical.
Probably the best backup catcher in baseball and great defensively. Looks like Salty's time in Boston is probably up.
