The reason why I think they will be shopping Porcello and JBJ is because they both will be 30 by the time their contracts and control expire. There's a really good chance that both these players aren't as good as they once were when they hit their decline. Both were really good in their 20's as players for the most part, but I would have a hard time seeing it in their 30's. I hope JBJ and Porcello are the ones that get left out with future contract extensions. You can debate the same thing for Sale too and his injury history on whether it's a good idea to extend him when he's starting to decline via injuries and durability wise. They only have a bit left on their contract, they may decline, but I think we are safe for 2019. They can help is win now and I do not see their performance falling off a cliff.

Sure. I agree to listen to offers to see what their value to other teams may be, on every single player really, but unless they are blowing us away, don't trade them two you recommended we trade, or anyone else. You don't trade players just because.
I, personally, don't think any team ready to compete for a championship in 2019 (thats who would be interested in those two) will trade away any of their core good controllable players for them. Also, dealing them would strengthen the competition, no? They are good players and valuable to the Red Sox.
I guess if a team offers a cost controlled young pitcher or CF, who is only slightly less effective than either of them and has 4/5 more years of control, you consider the offer, but the counter to that is: why don't that team just keep that good young player? Plus, we know Porcello and JBJ pretty well. They seem like great teammates, great clubhouse guys and good people overall. They are great representatives of this organization....
Also.... Signing Eovaldi and trading Porcello seems odd to me.... I want both.

I don't think you hate Porcello or Bradley, nor have I seen anyone else imply you do. Chill man. You just recomend trading them, as do a few others. I simply disagree in that logic. I think we have a chance to win it all again next year and short of the Sox completely falling apart, they should keep those two. If the Sox are trading good players away, my point is that Sale would bring back the most in return, but sure Porcello and Bradley can certainly bring back something too. It all depends on what we are doing. If we are trying to win this year and save money next year, keep Porcello and let him walk after the year. Perhaps Porcello gets a new deal and Sale gets traded because he wants Price money and years? After 2019, there are some very tough choices, I don't think trading Porcello this year would bring in equal value to help us win in 2019. He is more valuable to this team for 2019, than what we would receive in a trade for him, in my humble opinion. I'm chill, and yes people have implied that in the past. Until you know what could be offered for Porcello or JBJ, you can't possibly make a definitive yes or no call on whether the Sox should keep him. That's the whole point. It's not up to logic at this point. It's up to chance and circumstance in the trade market to dictate whether they stay or not. Ok.

I didn't read all the posts, so sorry if this was covered: why do the Mets need/want JBJ?

Trade Porcello for Goldschmidt, Bradley for Wheeler.... c'mon man.
Idk what is up with this.
We have a good SP and a good CF to play next year. Neither cost too much and both are on short term deals. They are ideal players for this team. We will need both.
Our OF defense is such a huge factor, you all saw it throughout the playoffs. Porcello was good, pitched in the pen and started.
I want Pearce, Eovaldi and Kelly back for sure.
Kimbrel if he takes a team friendly deal and Pomeranz maybe. I think Price and Nunez will be back.
If Kimbrel is gone, I'd be ok going after Robertson or Britton. I would like to see only two of Vazquez, Leon and Swihart next year, preferring to keep Leon and trading one of the other two.

First, I definitely don't think Porcello is untouchable. Yeah... I guess if a team blows us away with an offer you consider trading him, or the rest of the rotation, so in that view, I agree.
We can bring back a great team next year and decide after the year to resign Porcello. It's a one year deal, which is what we want.
Sale has just as much of a chance as not being in Boston after 2019.
We could have 35 year old Price and an often injured Rodriguez as the top pitchers. Eovaldi may not be back. Wright has one good year EVER on his resume, along with being in his late 30s and dealing with injuries. Johnson is your typical 5th/6th, long relief guy.
We are familiar with Porcello and he gives us innings and is never hurt. You don't trade pitchers we can count on like that.
We can agree to disagree as many seem to think trading him is a great idea, I cannot see that logic. We can make the money work for next year. After 2019, who knows who will still be here....

Why do you keep saying Porcello and trade together? Honestly, I do not understand where you are getting it from... the Red Sox cannot afford to trade him. For what exactly? We need him in the rotation. The lineup is pretty set. We may need a reliever, but has Porcello not proved his worth? What reliver is he worth trading for? Better yet, who is taking one year of Porcello for a top prospect or player? Keep him. And JBJ. Mainly because it makes a lot of sense! Thinking long-term and not just about building super teams. Getting something for him rather than letting him walk for nothing. Giving you money to sign Evoldi or someone else. They idea that Porcello is off limits is what I don't get, especially on a team that has Sale, Price, ERod, Wright, and everyone wants Evoldi back. Nevermind a bunch of other guys like Johnson that a bunch of teams would love to have as their 5th starter. It all depends what Porcello value is and I can see some teams valuing do to a short low risk one year deal. You certainly don't give him away, yet it isn't crazy if you can get a good return to trade him either. So many moving parts and so many very good ways to build a team. I definitely don't agree bud. It makes zero sense to me unless we completely fall apart and are out of the race.

Just out of curiosity, are there any players from the "core" that anyone could see getting traded? Does Porcello count? He is the only one that could possibly go. JBJ could go if someone offers the moon, but I don't see it. JBJ will still be relatively cheap next year because of his slow first half. Why do you keep saying Porcello and trade together? I don’t see Scherzer going anywhere. Even if they lose Harper they can compete in the NL east. If any big name/salary starter gets moved it will be Grienkie. I don't think Scherzer goes anywhere either

Agree. The combination of his age, power and high OBP are almost too good to pass-up. And if they wanted to cut down on his injuries they could play him at 1st base. After all, he came up a catcher and is highly athletic. Either way, my concern is that Mookie has given every indication that he will test the free agent waters. I really believe they need insurance for that, and for JD Martinez opting out - although I think a renegotiation and giving him an additional $5M a year might in exchange for the opt outs might get that done. Yup. Just get Betts signed for the next 10 years and ignore Harper. Not because he's average or injured a bit, or inconsistent. But because they have an awesome OF and need to spend $$$ elsewhere. Betts is the issue though. I think DD knows far more than we do about his interest in signing here. I suspect he may be MUCH more open to a long term beast of a deal now with Cora at the helm than he was with Farrell (who I think he hated). Your first paragraph exactly

We don't have to do anything this winter. We pick up his option at $13.5M for 2019 and let it play it out. My guess is DD will want to go for it again in 2019. Why would you trade Sale at this point? I don't think you trade him now, I would only consider it at the July deadline... depending on how things are going. Same with all our of possible trade candidates. Most of this team is back, so go for it again.

What are the needs? 1. Closer 2. Possibly a fifth starter 3. Right handed bat for 1B to go with Moreland (who needs to be platooned) 4. Big elephant in the room......what to do at 2B? 1) sign Miller (if healthy) 2) resign Eovaldi 3) resign Pearce 4) sign Lowrie So the answers for this incredible World Champion team are which FA’s can we afford to keep: 1. What will FA Craig Kimbrel cost to bring back 2. What will FA Britton, Herrera, etc. cost to sign if not Craig. 3. What will Joe Kelly cost to bring back. 4. What will FA Nate Eovaldi cost to bring back 5. What will FA Steve Pearce cost to bring back to platoon with MM 6. With Pedey on a year long training regimen while his knee has healed, how incredibly good will it be to have him back. 7. With Brockstar and Lin as excellent IF backups, and Nunez on a player option how soon might Marco, Quiroz, Chavis be ready to join them. 8. Finally, how bright may Thornburg, Smith, Hembree, Workman, Poyner, Lakins, Feltman, Shawaryn shine in ST, in just 3.5 months. 9. Final finally. Can this great champion team with great chemistry and amazing players and staff be even better in 2019? ?? Yes, those are the questions. For me, I think Kimbrel is gone, if he asks for what I think he will. Eovaldi would be great in the rotation, but if it is too much, which I don't think it will be, then we must move on. I think he is cheaper than Kimbrel, and just as vital considering the make up of who is already in the rotation. I like Kelly, hope he does not ask for too much or too long a deal. Pearce is perfect to compliment Moreland. He is a life long fan at the end of his career, I am hoping he WANTS to finish it in Boston.

I mentioned this a week ago in another thread, and agree in that it is a big decision. Perhaps a trade is best and I would be open to the idea... if it brought back a good young pitcher ready to play next year and a top prospect, along with a good young controllable reliever. Not sure who is ready to pay Sale and give up the goods too....

I should mention that Lakins most likely does not break camp with the big club and Johnson or Velasquez is there instead, but I like Lakins as the mainstay for most of the year with those other two spot starting and moving up and down with Pawtucket...

I have not heard anyone presume Eovaldi will be back, only that many would like him back on the right kind of deal.
As for the pen, like with most here, I think Lakins will be the first of the subject mentioned names to appear in the Sox pen.
I would love Kimbrel on a 4/54, but I keep seeing posts about 5/90.... that is way too much for me.
I'd like to see Kelly back.
For me:
CP Kimbrel RP Barnes RP Braiser RP Kelly RP Hembree RP Lakins RP Wright
If Kimbrel is gone, I'd like to see a cheaper vet like Robertson, Familia, Britton or a trade (Swihart).

In Baseball its the AVV for luxury tax, so the number doesn't change, just what the player receives. He'll count for 30 million the next 3 years, just like he did for the past four years. Ahh, yeah

But for payroll reasons will it not count $37, $36 and $34.5 mil over the next three years? He actually gets paid $35 mil each year from 19, 20 and 21, no? The savings Wash had the last four years gets paid out $15 mil per from 2022 on...
Either way, I don't think it will ever actually happen, just saw his contract and thought to dicuss it.

Would Washington trade him? Probably not, but hear me out.
If they lose Harper, and I think they will, they may decide to rebuild the team.
Scherzer signed a 7 year deal and just finished the 4th year. His contract was a huge bargin those first four years, but now his contract really inflats and he will be pitching the next three years at age 34, 35 and 36. See below contract from Cots:
7 years/$210M (2015-21) signed by Washington as a free agent 1/21/15 $50M signing bonus $5M in 2015 and $15M each in 2019, 2020, 2021 payments in equal semiannual installments, April-September salaries: 15:$10M, 16-18:$15M annually. 19-21:$35M annually 2019-21 salaries ($105M) deferred without interest, to be paid in seven $15M installments each July 1 from 2022 to 2028 deferrals reduce contract’s present-day value to $191,401,086 (by MLB calculation) or $191,409,858 (MLBPA calculation) for purposes of annual payrolls (including salaries and a pro-rated 1/7 share of the signing bonus), Scherzer will earn $17,142,857 in 2015, $22,142,857 annually in 2016-18, $37,405,562 in 2019, $35,920,616 in 2020, and $34,503,480 in 2021 (salaries and bonus paid before the contract expires are not discounted, but 2019-21 salaries are discounted to $30,262,705, $28,777,759 and $27,360,623, respectively, as money paid after deal’s expiration)
On top of this Strausburg is due to make $35 mil in 2019 and having two pitchers tie up $70 is quite a lot, especially if with losing Harper they feel as if they are not WS contenders. Atl and Phi are improved and Wash is not too good even with Harper.
All said, not sure Boston can afford Scherzer at $35 mil anyway, not to mention what it may take in trade assets...
But, could this be an option?
Sale at 5-7 years at $35 mil per year or Scherzer at 3 years at $35 mil per, plus prospects of some sort too...
Just a thought, not saying I would do it, or even that this is a possibility.

This probably has a 0.1% chance of happening, but I'd love to have Charlie Morton on the Sox. If not Eovaldi, he is my 2nd choice of the FAs available
