It's a fair point that I wouldn't want to give up a Mayer for him, but I also wonder why Manzardo is ranked that high as a 23 year old first baseman with league average AAA offensive production. These things tend to work out in the Rays favor--I suspect Manzardo won't amount to much and the Rays get a number 3-ish cheap starter for the next three years. I would not have done Mayer for Civale either, but this does highlight the fact that the price to obtain impact pitching through trade this off season will hurt. Also returns me to what we could have gotten for Paxton.

Why does every other team we play have dudes that paint and our pitchers are just slabbing putty? Our pitchers never face our hitters?

It is strange how much more the Sox looked like a playoff team when they were playing the worst team in baseball.

I hate the Toledo Mud Hens Are you more team-Radar than team Klinger? (Might only make sense to the 50+ers in the room).

TBR hatred is a mystery to me. They've only eliminated us once, in 2008. They do things right. They're not the MFY. I hate every team in the AL East that is not the Red Sox with the heat of a thousand suns. And I hate NYY more than that. My AL East hate rankings: 1) Rays… all that I hate about the game the last 15 years. Charisma-less, the anti-aesthetic of sport. 2) Yankees… less fun to hate when we aren’t competing for playoffs. 3) Jays… mostly respect hate. 4) Orioles… can’t hate a team that has sucked so long and finally has an interesting team.

Didn’t they create the shift? They may do things mathematically well, but top to bottom — stadium to style of play — they make games hard to watch.

I am starting to wonder why you have Rafaela on the roster only to sit him. Isn’t he better off playing everyday at AAA? I am reminded of a joke: a mother buys her son two shirts; one blue and one green. The son decides to please the mother by wearing the blue shirt. When the mother sees him she says “what, you didn’t like the green one???” This lineup gives us the other OF rookie we have to see, Abreu of the blue shirt in CF. And another blue shirt, Urias, at 2B. We also get to see if Yoshida is recovering, and hopefully some hot RH pop in CF w Duvall who is fighting for a job here. We will see lots of Green shirts like Rafaella and Valdez over the next few weeks at least. Ok… but I don’t care about the 2b comp, and I am not nearly as high on Abreu as on Rafaela. But even if Abreu gets the nod, Rafaela has not played much overall. I’m not putting the team on blast… not *that* big a deal. But I wish he’d play some more.

Could Teel be platooning with Wong by middle of next year? Have two bazookas behind the plate.

Exciting. This is a pretty aggressive promotion, no? I ask seriously — you all track this closer than I do. He was in high school last year, right?
I love the prospects that force their way quickly. Hope he keeps it up.

Can I ask a serious question: how many of us have seen him play regularly? I mean, to say something like he’ll be better defensively than JBJ, who was about as good as it gets… I assume that is based on regular viewing? Otherwise, it just seems like wild speculation.

Does Wong still count as a rookie? He actually has a higher WAR than Casas!

Haven't really watched Sale pitch today other than snippets, so there's probably a reason people are talking this way, but the comments read kind of funny when his current line is 4 2 0 0 0 3. I was thinking that. But the Royals are awful. And he’s gotten a few key calls that spared walks. Not sure this Sale has these numbers against a better team.

Maybe it is because the game is generally low energy, but I’m not sure it’s been sufficiently noted that the ump is not very good.

I am starting to wonder what you do with Sale going into next year. Bullpen? Trade? Hope this year helps him build back to better stuff next year? If the latter, are you setting yourself up for being down a pitcher early?

why do most of the posts give leniency to Paxton because he hasn't pitched much over the last 3 years (npt singling anyone out, seems to be the prevailing wisdon). Can't someone put up the argument that he shouldn't be tired because he hasn't pitched ? I just think he is not the guy everyone would like him to be. Great stuff, but remember the MFY got rid of him or let him go (some demotion or something during playoffs). He is a big guy also, maybe he just gets tired during the season. I think not pitching for 3 years is lower on the probable reasons. Look at his career numbers, nice career, but nothing too noteworthy. Similarly, if the assumption is not pitching leads to early fatigue… why wasn’t it obvious before the season Paxton would be limited help (I mean, to yhose of us who didn’t say he’d be limited help)?

No, I’ve said many times that they’ve backed themselves into a corner. I think you agreed in the past. They are ok everywhere, but not great in many spots. The FA market doesn’t help much. I think it’ll be hard to make the team much better. That’s why what I’d look into would be letting Duvall walk, and trading Verdugo and a major prospect for a real upgrade in RF. May not be possible. But if we are still at a point when it is impossible to make major improvements that is not a *defense* of small moves… it is a condemnation of the last 3-4 years. I do agree that they're kind of acceptably good across the board and that that is an oddly sort of hand-tying position to be in. Don't know that I'd call it "backed into a corner." And I do think there's potential for several guys to pop as 4 or 5 WAR players next year - Devers obviously, but also Casas, Story, and Yoshida. But "they're generally unimprovable, given available options" is not like the worst place to be in - especially since it most decidedly does not apply to the pitching staff. I agree on pitching. But having to buy two frontline starters in one off season is not a great position.
