I stopped watching the game at 8-3 and Rubby pitching for couple hours and I come back to find the score 12-8. Hopefully Lacky is not thinking that these guys gonna lay egg on me again tomorrow.

Who is the leadoff hitter if Ells goes? Pedroia doesn't like to do it. Victorino's OBP won't be high enough. Bradley is unproven. Could be a platoon with Nava and somebody else vs. lefties, but I don't see that guy yet. Then again, if they sign Ells, or Choo... Victorino's OBP this year is .351 compared to Ells .355 and career it's Victorino at .342 to Ells at .350. OBP isn't the issue, it's losing the 50+ SB. Victorino has 20 this year, we miss 30+ SB. Victorino has better arm and that saves some runs. Reduces 1B-3B runs potentially getting pitchers in to fewer high leverage situations. Every prospect including JBJ, Bogaerts are unproven unless given the opportunity with significant playing time. They ran up the MiLB ladder at a faster clip because Sox management believes in their ability to take on those challenges. If we need a veteran like Coco (I doubt he will come back to be put in to the same situation as it was before he left) for JBJ, do we also need a veteran for Bogaerts? Yes we need some bench for OF and IF but getting them solely because your prospect is unproven is not trusting your evaluations of those prospects.

Man these MLB network commentators are harping on the missed check swing leading to one Sox run but not talking about the missed tag at 3B leading to bunch of MFY runs.

Daniel Nava is the second-best hitting left fielder in baseball, behind only Mike Trout. Hopefully he can cash the season to a 8-10M contract next season. He is one of the guys I dont mind getting overpaid by the Sox. He is still arbitration eligible right? Edit: Cots says he got 1.066M in 2012 and gets 505,500 this year. Did his salary go down from 2012? He is not Arb eligible until 2015 season.

He has a ton of power, if his approach/pitch recognition is passable... Hopefully he will learn with experience now that he knows he could be sent back down. If he does well, Sox can really do some damage going forward as offense from 3B was awful this year.

Should we start a poll on who will get that pay back HBP? (We can take out Victorino as he has been a magnet for HBP's these days)

This is the most important week for the Sox since the most important week they had last week, since the most important week they had the week before last week Had to get that one out. Hopefully they dont have a let down today after the fireworks yesterday. 2-2 is a good result and 3-1 is excellent.

I hope Sox will workout a trade with Cubs instead of letting him go for nothing. What do you think they'll give up that isn't about equal to nothing? I wasn't thinking more than a lottery ticket but its still worth more than nothing.

Nope. Claimed by CHC (and probably a half dozen other clubs). I hope Sox will workout a trade with Cubs instead of letting him go for nothing.

I'd love to see the Sox do a Sabathia-esque contract with Bailey -- ie, one with an opt-out after three years -- but don't make the mistake that the Yankees did in not actually letting the guy walk after the three years. I think its a player opt-out. If he succeeds enough to opt out, its well and good but the alternative could suck for Sox.

He will get a call up at some point next year but definitely not going to start the season with Sox. Hopefully we will see him in Aug/Sep timeframe next year.

I'm obviously rooting for Bard, but there's a pretty good chance his baseball career is over. Hopefully he proves me wrong. As has been mentioned on this board, though, Bard is a really bright dude. He'll have a successful future, whether that's as a baseball player or not. Might be a little too early for that. Such pitchers change couple of organizations before getting better again.

Is it more likely that no one claims him today as every one is trying to get their roster call up's on to 40-man? I hope he stays with Sox.

Hope all you want, but he is NOT ready for prime time. And even with the impending callup of extra pitchers, we don't need a 5-inning starter. The Christian Vasquez saga is a strange one. A fine season to put himself squarely in the picture as catcher -- except for the passed balls. #22 tonight, with Hernandez on the mound. I wonder if this is becoming some kind of mental block. Is this enough of an issue to keep him down on the farm until he straightens it out? Hard to trust the guy in close ballgames late. Of course, I don't know -- maybe all the PB come in the first 3 innings. And if he can shut down the running game with his arm, maybe he saves more bases than the PB relinquish. I read some where (quite possible I might be dreaming this, am not really sure) that he tries to catch with his glove even in situations when he should just be blocking the ball causing these passed balls. The intent was to catch more balls with glove so he can throw runners out and also getting up from his catching position a little earlier.

I dont know of too many pitchers who lead their organizations starters in wins, era, strike outs, batting average against, ops against, are second in whip ,who arent considered an ace. As far as the walk rate, you might want to see how many of those walks came on 3/2 pitches which is another reflection of his swing and miss stuff. If the batter cant hit the ball and put the ball in play then the walk rate will be higher. The walk rate will go down in the bigs because guys will actually be able to make contact and thus 'get themselves out' but right now batters are over matched. I would also point out that amongst all the top strike out guys in the minors Owens has give up the least home runs...Only one hr since early May. I would think that there would also be an allowance for even more improvement, thus I wonder how someone today can say without doubt that he couldnt be an ace. Right now he is the best pitcher in the Eastern League at 21 years old. He was the best pitcher in the Carolina league this year. Or is the best pitcher in each league the guy with the 3-10 record with the 6.98 era , 268 opponents batting average, but throws a nice straight 97 mph fast ball. Like I say...97mph toward the plate, 120mph as it goes over the left field fence Not sure if that explain the walk rate. By your description those batters should be getting out by SO or weakly hit PO/GO. I get your enthusiasm for HO and many here share it but this might be stretching it a bit.

I wonder if they activated Bard to see what he does and potentially take him off the 40 man roster? I think there will be multiple departures from Sox, so they will have enough room on 40 man but it will be interesting to see how they play this out with Bard.

He is bound to increase his velocity by a tick or two as he fills up over the next couple of years. As he does, there is potential the movement on his stuff might get effected/reduced until he learns to cope with that increased velocity. As a prospect watcher it is important to remember few if any will have a straight ascent to Majors. Even our current "ace" Buchholz had ton of troubles before he could harness his talent. So there is no point in comparing HO to elites at this stage. Just sit back, enjoy and dream he could be the ace we are all waiting for since Pedro.

His bat is definitely intriguing, and given the Rule 4 draft focus on pitchers and up-the-middle guys in recent years, the addition of a power hitter definitely piques my interest. I have doubts about whether he sticks at 3B, though, and with his build ( short and stocky), I think he'll eventually move to LF or 1B as he fills out. IIRC some where on this board or SOSH, I read he grew up almost 3-5'' from last year to this year and that he is close or slightly above 6' and 200lbs+. Any update on his recent size?

So according to Olney, Farrell walking down to Peavy in the dugout, presumably to take him out of the game, but Peavy "gave him a look" and Farrell turned around and walked the other way. So... why even have a manager? Just let these guys do whatever they want. Not like there's any reason to take the EXTREMELY FRAGILE Peavy out of this five-run ballgame. Buster is guessing there as he has no idea what Farrell is thinking. He might as well be asking Peavy how he is doing. No reason to worry about such commentary.

Jose Iglesias since being traded: .286/.333/.357 (.690 OPS), out with sore left elbow for a few games. Did we really get Jake Peavy? Props to Cherington. That means he is doing better than he did for the few weeks before the trade. It is a good trade so far.

Wow those are some ugly swings from WMB and XB before XB hit that ball to Agon. All three AB were hard hit by XB today. Seems he is slowly getting comfortable. "Slowly"? It's like his third major league start. I meant it as a good sign.
