I wouldn't mind seeing them test Cabrera at 3rd with a bunt, just to feel him out.

Alright, Breslow is going to get out of this inning, the Red Sox are going to score five runs, and the madness ends tonight, right?

Chill out dudes, this was a nervous and illogical game. Drew is Farrell's homie and he's not going to get PH for. Pinch running for Papi is undefendable, but so was Maddon giving up the DH. It worked in hindsight, but it's a stupid idea. I guess that's all managers in a nutshell. This team is too tough to give it up because of a rough night. If we face that previous Moore, on short rest no less, we'll be fine. Everybody chill. Don't panic until it's game 5 time. Yeah, I agree, but it's so frustrating to watch Farrell willingly ignore the fact that Drew can't produce against lefties. There is no excuse.

Wow. Xander comes in to do what he does best, of course. TBS suggests he may try to steal a base. I don't think I'd ever see the day where I'd long for Joe Buck and The Mouth Breather, but life is funny.

Nothing like spending four hours watching a game only to see your team implode.

Why is Xander on this roster if you're never going to use him in spots like this?

The Red Sox did have homefield in '07 against Cleveland. Remember Pedroia's Game 7 homer where he flipped the bat and it went about 18 inches over the monster? Yeah, you're right. The only thing I really remember clearly about that series was Drew's grand slam.

When's the last time the Red Sox were the number one seed in the AL? What about the last time they finished with the best record in the entire league? Despite finishing with the same record as the Indians in 2007, they did not gain homefield because of a tiebreaker.
Was it '46?

A win tonight would be huge, and it would be the epitome of the 2013 Red Sox season.
Let's go!

Did Derek Lowe just fart during that commentary? If so, just awesome. I don't know if it's just the novelty, but I'm liking Derek Lowe as the color guy. It's nice listening to a guy that is just barely removed from baseball and whose experiences are still relevant. edit: Buchholz looks a lot sharper than I assumed beforehand. It's amazing that this team is a premier baseball team despite losing arguably their best pitcher for approximately three months. If he comes close to his early 2013 form, I really, really like their chances.

I'm also a bit uneducated on the free agency topic, but I have a question for the board. If Xander is really as good as advertised, does the extra year of team control even matter? I mean, if they were to call him up now, he would hit free agency at age 27 as opposed to 28 (or 26/27, I don't know). As we've seen recently, star players don't hit free agency anymore, so if X turns into what everyone thinks, the chances of him even sniffing free agency are next to none. And wouldn't it be better if he were free agent eligible a year earlier? Good players that hit the market for the first time are generally 29-31 years of age and lock up contracts that cripple the franchise for the back part of the contract generally. So wouldn't X being eligible for a long term contract a year earlier ensue that Boston locks him up through his prime years? I know, I know, no need to even think down the road this far when you never know what could happen, but it's more of a hypothetical question to allow me to understand the process more thoroughly. Thanks dudes. ADD: The argument for JBJ was different, simply because his ceiling is so much lower. It's much easier to imagine him being more replaceable when he's FA eligible, so the cost controller years are so much more important. But with X, if he turns into what the industry sees in his future, he should be in Boston for almost all of his career. Just look at Mike Trout; there's no way LAA foregoes locking him up at least a year before he's eligible for free agency, so the extra year seems meaningless to me. This is what I'm thinking. If Xander ends up being a very good to great player, does a year really make a difference? Especially when you consider the fact that the Red Sox will be a big market franchise for the foreseeable future. Anyway, I'm happy with the Middlebrooks call up. It's the next best thing, outside of Bogaerts.

Hollywood needs to start making fictional baseball movies again. I would say that this is definitely more than "not a bad start", this is a pretty impressive start.
