Heard the rumors that the Phils like Manuel Margot. So do I!! Margot is, so far, 2 for 2 with his 9 stolen base in AA.

Per Rosenthal, Ken Rosenthal @ken_Rosenthal 2m2 minutes ago Source: #Royals getting Cueto. Cueto is about set to become a KC Royal making it 100% that he will have a new address come 2016 and will not cost a draft pick. GREAT NEWS!! Could be a super sign for us this offseason.

I'm generally pretty anti-Hamels, but if all it takes is Margot and secondary pieces (read: prospects outside the top 13), I would probably go for that. Count me in. I'm usually patient with the development of our kids and system, but if we REALLY are wanting to be in the race next season, we need TWO and not one upgrade in our rotation. Hamels would be a great fit at the top along with another starter (maybe Zimmerman or Samarjia). Now if 2016 is not going to be all in, hold off. In many ways we are somewhat deciding the short term future (2016) over the remainder of 2015. I can see it going either way, but if 2016 is a goal.....picking up Hamels and sacrificing Margot works for me.

Watching a train wreck.
The season is really not going to get a lot better, but I'm wishing that they can move him to first base. Sadly, but importantly, they need to find a home for Mike Napoli by August 1st. I'm sure most of us don't want Cherington to keep up the charade that Hanley is improving in left. Somehow Hanley seems to have a very low baseball IQ. He doesn't have a plan A, let alone a plan B. You could probably ask for time, run out to left, and ask him how many outs there are.....and get the wrong answer 5 times out of 10. Manny was a lot like that. They seem to lack focus. They have little understanding of what they will do if situation X happens. They haven't given it any thought. Luckily hitting came easily for Ramirez.
Certainly he should be a DH, but with Papi it can't happen quite yet. Ortiz will probably be back for one more season. Hanley needs to be moved to first for several reasons, but one is to have a "position" to play when inter-league play is upon us in 2017 and beyond.

Could be really difficult to get the GCL games in today. LOTS of rain.

Well we have to start somewhere. As you can see in this photo, Ben Cherington has started his "clean-up" a little further up (in the stands). Certainly uncluttered seating and trash pick-up is high on my list. Hopefully after he finishes up this task, Ben will get down to making this the LAST team in the next 10 years to finish LAST in the standings. I'd rather have Cherington sign Mr. Clean to bat clean-up than do this kind of work. Anyone have the local number for Molly Maid?

I think you are all on the right track above. The charade is over. The Fat Lady has sang twice. Santa is going to miss us this year.
The last 5 games, especially, have taken the heart out of me for defending our manager and our GM. ANYONE may be given their pink slip. Until the last few games, if you want to call them that, I at least saw some moxie and some improvement. Before the All-Star game, I was certain Ben Cherington and John Farrell would be back in Fort Myers next February and March. Now.....I'm not sure. This team is not at all inspired. This club needs a big-time overhaul.
This team will finish last in the AL East for the 3rd time in 4 years. I get it.....that it is not quite our time. I do! We have some amazing talent 23 and younger in the system. We are not ready with the make-up of this team to compete at the highest level.............but we should be more competitive than we are. It is actually embarrassing.
There is no excuse after the LA series for Victorino or Napoli to play again. I hate saying that. I like both players. I appreciate so much what they meant to us in 2013, but they are not even remotely part of our future....and they know it. Move them somewhere were that might resurrect their careers.
I too think Jackie Bradley Jr. deserves a last COMPLETE chance to show if he is part of the solution or part of the disease. I would love to see Hanley start to make the transition into a 1st baseman. The organization by now knows that pitching and defense wins pennants and not having to win games 6 to 5.
It really looks like we will be choosing extremely high in the 2016 draft. I'm hoping that that pleasure is not part of 2017. People better watch out for us in 2018 or earlier, but this year gentleman and ladies is a wash.

GCL game postponed (rain). Bummed.. We showed at Port Charlotte's park and nobody's there but the groundskeeper's at 11:15AM.. Field was wet, sky as blue as can be and no game? This is Florida, it always rains like this. You kidding me? Anyway... Wife and I decided to stretch out mini vacation to another day.. More sunning at the beach for her and more time hiding underneath a 'brolly for me.. heh.. Pure torture you see? Hopefully no rain on Tuesday so can see wonder pitcher Anderson Espinoza go at it. I feel for you. This same thing happened to me last year in Port Charlotte. I pull up and the Red Sox team is climbing into the damn bus. The rain had stopped easily 45 minutes before and there wasn't a cloud in the beautiful blue sky. I was so pissed! My ride from Bradenton is about 45 minutes to the Rays' complex, and the whole way back I was grumbling. Hadn't yet seen Chavis and wanted to see Devers again. Florida's rain season is no myth!

Maybe the best plan is no activity at all. These pitchers are all in their walk-year. All have potential for being swapped before the trade deadline: Cueto, Price, Samardzija, Kazmir, Zimmerman, Ian Kennedy, Mike Leake, Yovani Gallardo, Mat Latos and Dan Haren.
Now certainly they are far from being equal, but if they are traded before August 1, there is no draft pick loss. I hope they all get traded....and not to us. For sure Cueto and Price will be due HUGE compensation and years this offseason. BUT the other guys are not necessarily. Samardzia, Kazmir, Zimmerman, and maybe Leake might fit in our rotation next season as strong #3's. None are aces. But they may help us improve our rotation without compensation.
Personally, I would love for us to sign Price or Cueto, but that probably has no chance of happening.

from redsox040713champs "I'm probably in the minority on this, but I rather would see the Sox give Cueto big money and years (I think Cueto could give the Sox 4 strong years out of 7) than have to see them part with Margot or Devers, along with Owens and Vazquez. And Cueto won't cost the Sox a draft pick either, which would differ if they went after Zimmerman.
Eventually the Sox will most likely have to part with Vazquez or Swihart, and I prefer keeping Swihart, but I really like the idea of an athletic future outfield of Betts, Margot, and Benintendi, and would prefer to see the Sox give the extra $ and years and keep Margot (and I certainly wouldn't substitute Moncada or Devers in the deal)."
I totally in to your thinking about Cueto. I just don't think Ben is. I entirely hate giving up young prospects like Margot. The front office needs to get with the times this year about the cost for an ace. Will they? I hope so! I love what we are building and don't want to be rushed, but if we truly want to compete for the play-offs in 2016, something has to change.

IT IS DEFINITELY NOT TO EARLY TOO BE SHAPING UP THE ROSTER FOR 2016!!
Why? Because after the next week, we will be realistically out-of-the-running for the play-offs. LA, Huston, and Detroit will probably be the death knell for us over the next few days.
I've evolved into thinking Cole Hamels would be the best pitcher for us to pick up. His contract is much more palpable to Cherington and the 3 Amigos above him than signing a pitcher this winter for 5 to 6 years at $22 to 25 million. We do need an ace. I was totally wrong with thinking we had enough. So what would it take for both sides to be OK?
How about Margot, Christian Vasquez, and Henry Owens? Too much? I don't think so, especially if the Phils take some of the money due Hamels.
I know some like Vasquez better than Swihart. I don't. To me Swihart will be an All-Star eventually....a much better all-around player. The Phillies need a young catcher, we may be one of the few teams that can offer them one. I'd hate to lose Margot, but there may not be any place to play him in 2 years in Boston. I'd prefer it was Bradley, but I doubt he will be as appealing to Philadelphia. Henry gives them a potentially decent rotation piece. I'm not sure he will reach his full potential.
Steep? Maybe so, but we need to shore up the rotation, and waiting till the winter may prove to be a very foolish decision.
I can actually see the Sox signing a Zimmerman (if not too pricey) or a Fister or someone else not at the David Price/Johnnie Ceoto level to be a strong #2 if we have our 1st rounder protected ALSO. We will NOT be in the race next season either, if we don't make the rotation (and the pen) a priority.

Cannot believe we are in the same situation as last year. BUT we need to make the most of it. It looks like the next 5 to 6 games will decide that we are not buyers and hardly sellers because we have so little to sell. 12 days to the deadline. I would have to think Napoli and Victorino are going to be moved by then....probably just released. We will be doing the "audition" dance in August and September.....so our draft selection might even be better than #7.
It is getting harder and harder to say "yeah". I miss being in contention. I miss being the big bad Red Sox. Back to watching where will pick in June of 2016...hooray!

Kevin Steen has been looking real good. Finally gave up an earned run today (1) in 4 innings (4 K and 0 BB). Not seen him but he is making us sit up and take notice isn't he. Anyone have an idea on his stuff? Turns 19 next week.

Meanwhile, 3B could easily be open if they decide to move Sandoval of 3B (and over to 1B). I guess it's the question of what they SHOULD do versus what they WILL do (and how confident we are that those may line up). I don't think Panda is moving off 3B, so I still think it lines up fine. I believe Moncada is Pedey's long-term replacement. If Sandoval plays next year like this year (or shudder worse), I can see the Sox moving him. He will get a lot more rope to hang himself. Hopefully he puts together a good 2nd half this year, and comes out feeling comfortable and productive next.....but Moncada could be our 3rd baseman by 2017.

Jim Callis @jimcallismlb 53s53 seconds ago ... 16th-rder Marc Brakeman signs w/ redsox for $225k. Stanford RHP, 91-94 & very impressive in Cape, shoulder woes this spring. @mlbdraft BOOM! OUTSTANDING! I figured he was a pipe dream a week ago. Love Stanford pitchers. Lowell certainly?

His swing from both sides does look good! Definitely not a Panda candidate. Finally looking like the player we all thought he was going to be. He probably will move pretty quickly. Like to see him in Salem soon, and then he puts it into "Mookie" overdrive next season.

Moncada goes inside the yard Man is he on a tear! 3 homers in the last 3 games. Wouldn't be surprised if Salem is getting closer.

By the way, Jaggar's mom said that Mick Jaggar was one of the reasons they went with that name. They call him Jag by the way. I asked her if they had any other boys, and she mentioned they have an older boy who is 24. I asked his name, and she said his name was, I think, Nicolai. I told her that was great but didn't she think in hindsight that a name like "Sting" would be cooler. Her and Jag's dad did laugh (thank goodness).
Forgot to mention this. I asked the parents how he was getting along with the other kids and they said he liked everyone really well.....and especially his roommate Logan Allen. They said Logan will be making his debut Monday coming.

Red Sox officially announce Lakins and Valentin signings. I wouldn't hold out hope for anyone else. I can just hear it now in Beantown in 6 years or so......the crowd cheering Yomar, Yomar, Yomar! One letter off from one of my favorites.

Josh Pennington with a nice outing today
(W, 1-1) 4.0 4 0 0 2 4 0 0.82
of the 4 hits only one was extra (double)
Rusconi with 2 hits and one a triple.
This GCL team is a juggernaut. They win again 8 to 3.

It is going to be down-right difficult to get my baseball "fix" today. No Boston and all those off-days and All-Star games is getting me depressed.
