Let's hope Breslow immediately moves on Plan B today. The Yamamoto news is sickening but hopefully he has this situation already lined up. He certainly has the ammunition to sign TWO starters rather quickly. Stay away from Snell and that qualifying offer if possible.

Burnes and Adamas. What does it take. Obviously more than the rays got. Would you include Mayer or Anthony? Would yorke and'2 of blais/ rafaella / duran be enough? Probably have to include some pitching gonzalez , whitlock , houck. How about yorke, Duran, Houck? And sign burnes for 8/200 ( or whatever. This is a different discussion) After hearing the terrible Yamamoto news, there will be many calls for trading for someone like Burnes. It is understandable, but in my opinion any trade should not have Mayer, Anthony, or Teel in it...period. I would much rather experience one more down year than do something so foolish. We have "managed" the organization poorly for several years. It has sickened me how a once powerful organization has fallen so far. Go after Burnes and work out a deal if you can but don't make a bad situation worse.

Very interesting list, and has been said...some clunkers. But I'm sorry, it is time to start thinking big once again. Yamamoto and Montgomery will cost, a lot, but it needs to done.

Second base is a transition position this year. Even by the end of 2024, we could have some internal options that could be very good. Why fill 2nd with someone who will cost a lot of trade capital? I'm fine with Whit Merrifield for a cheap 1 year. Adds D, speed, and a RH bat.

Not sure what to make out if the deal other than he is alot like a younger version of Duvall. They both even had strong 2021 seasons. I'm guessing his numbers regressed due to injuries and Marmol was questioning the extent of the injuries toward his hustle? Is O'Neil supposed to play strictly against lefties or is the hope that he stays healthy enough to be an every day player but have viable options ready. In a vacuum it's a good trade, a no doubter, trading 2 middle relievers for an OF with his 2021 ceiling. I just worry about the certainty aspect. Is he fully healthy? Have the injuries eroded his hitting skills the past 2 years? He certainly walked at a higher rate the last 2 partial seasons. I just think the Sox need more of a quality/certainty than merely banking on a bounce back. Does this mean O'Neil replaces a steady RH hitter in the lineup or is he just in the Duvall role? And yes I get this could push Yoshida to DH or still leave LF for a certain Verdugo like offensive talent in LF like Gurriel or does Turner return to DH? Is O'Neill good enough to be a Fenway RF? So many questions and unclarity at the moment which is fine for now. But given a chance to rent O'Neill for Robertson and Santos i'd do that every time. Just not quite certain of the impact other than it's useful to have at worst a power RH bat bench that can defend adequately. At least very little in valuable trade chips were expended. Agreed. Love this trade.

Excellent trade! His upside is pretty high and we won't miss either of those two arms. Great trade with lots of potential

I like the idea of Whit Merrifield at second. There. I said it. Come at me. I like it also a 1-year bridge. You are not alone, manfred!

I wish they'd just lock-up Montgomery NOW and throw the rest of their weight at Yamamoto. If you look at each position, several of these guys, if healthy, will be better next season (much better).
Bring back Duval and add Drury to play 2nd. With 2 new starters, move Whitlock and/or Houck back to the pen...and we could be really good out there.
My point: if we sign Yamamoto and Montgomery, we will automatically be in the hunt. There is no real reason to trade any of our prospects. Our staff will be much better and believe our infield defence WILL be better.

It definitely is being mentioned in this area. This is how the Rays do business. Someone gets slightly expensive and they want to move him. I love Glasnow also and a trade for those two would solve a lot of problems, but can't see it really.
Glasnow is making $25 million and Arozarena, I believe, around 9 million. Glasnow, though dominant on the mound, spends as much time on the trainers table, so I rather go a different direction. But Arozarena has a lot of talent, is right-handed, and won't have to DH (a good thing...Lol).

Blaze is real slow, I wouldn't count on him ever playing an acceptable major league OF I've been hoping for the past year they tried converting him to an outfielder (left). He has been a surprise to me, as I thought we'd see more power and more swing and miss. His hit tool, in my opinion, has been impressive. He is young and I love he is trying, by losing that extra weight, to be more of an athlete. Right-handed power in Fenway is not to be overlooked. Let's face it, he will never be our first baseman or our 3rd baseman. I like his attitude and wouldn't be shocked if he starts pounding on the door.

Love to see them pry Grissom away. It seems they are not sure what they have with him. They are even thinking of trying him the outfield because of his athletisim. Love his tools and would like that to be pursued but to me the Braves are one of the saviest organizations and they've always liked this kid.
I've been looking at rosters myself for a right-handed hitting second basemen. Not many turn me on or are available. The free agents are pretty terrible.

I'd take Wacha at that price tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if he could be had for 2/$24M. Either way, he's put together back to back nice seasons and still only 32. Sure would make me feel better to secure one rotation spot vs waiting to see who gets Yamamoto and then lose at musical chairs for the rest. Yes I want Yamamoto pretty badly but you can't just wait until he decides. We need TWO starters in my opinion. There has already been a fair amount of movement.

I like Anthony and was fortuate to have seen him play twice, but he is potential and Robert is already a productive (and young) major leaguer. No contest with Robert being 25 and a good outfielder.
The thing about Jimenez is he is a DH type. Like his bat but I'd rather we stay away from one-dimentional players. But, YES we need right-handed pop!

While it's nice that Breslow seems to know what he's doing in pitching department and can nerd out about it with potential signees, I'm sure curious what his plans are for the lineup, which seems like the thornier problem for next season. So far they've shipped out their second baseman and have shopped their rightfielder, and that's about all we know. What does he plan to *add*, and how does he plan to do it, given the weakness of this FA class? Would he be content to go into the season (as some here are) with the current outfield roster minus Verdugo? Does he have a particular philosophy about hitters? Is there any reporting on this at all?
I personally see a trade(s) for the other non-starting pitcher moves.

Below the remaining tier of top FA starters (Yamamoto, Montgomery, Snell), here are the starting pitchers who project for more than 1.5 WAR and who also have CrowdSourced contract predictions.* Usually every year a handful of guys in this sort of medium group signs for lesser money and ends up having a good year - which one of these would you bet on? Eduardo Rodriguez - 4/76 mil Marcus Stroman - 3/66 mil Lance Lynn - 1/10 milLucas Giolito - 2/30 mil James Paxton - 1/8 mil Seth Lugo - 2/26 mil Kyle Gibson - 1/12 mil Kenta Maeda - 2/24 mil Sean Manaea - 2/24 mil Hyun Jin Ryu - 1/10 mil Frankie Montas - 1/8 mil Michael Wacha - 3/39 mil Jack Flaherty - 2/20 mil Luis Severino - 1/10 mil *https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker?&pos=sp Updated: Lance Lynn to STL Of this list I like Lugo, Stroman, Ryu and Manaea. Wouldn’t hate Montas or Severino at those prices either depending on what else they do After the my top choice ( a certain 25 year old from Japan), I'd like to see them go after a Flaherty or Severino with a team option for a 2nd year. Love to see us "fix" one of these guys.

We certainly CAN'T stop with this pitcher, as we need a righthanded bat badly, a 2nd basemen (hopefully righthanded), and, I believe, another starter. It is time to throw our weight around once again.
I know you all feel what I'm feeling now, when will we see some moves to get excited about.
Thank God for the Celtics!

Alright then. We should expect Yamamoto to be signed, sealed, and delivered to the Red Sox by 8:01am tomorrow morning. Get on it, Craig. This is the guy for me also. 25 year old with dominant stuff. What a statement for the fans this would be! Even if he was are only free agency signing I'd be OK. But let's take care of this business FIRST, Craig!!!

I'd agree about Ohtani. Great talent, lots of money, older, DH.
This topic to me is about getting back to having BIG talent...superior talent. I remember my first Spring Training game in Ft Myers and the old park. I was so fortuate to look out on the field that day and see Manny, Damon, Tek, and Nomar.
Who ever gets the top job, he/she needs to not be afraid of spending. Yes, spending wisely...but spending.
Yeah, Soto is my wish, but we need to start NOW making those major moves that were always so exciting. Heck, signing a Bellinger and moving Dugie would be a nice start.
I do believe Mayer and Anthony will be special players. But I want them starting to throw around the cash again. No idea what a 10-year extension (or longer) would cost for Juan Soto, but I'd like to see us throw our weight around once again.

So amazing the playoffs will have two former Met's starting in Verlander and Scherser. The playoffs have shown you have no hope without a couple of studs at the top of your rotation.
Love the Dodgers are swept. They had a bandaid and a tourniqet for their rotation

It is totally my hope he understands this off seasom what it takes to be much better next season. Those plane trips and bad beds have got to have taken a toll. I know it made me stop flying and doing presentations. I'm sure he will be more consistent

I'd love for Soto to be a Red Sox, but not by trading our best prospects. Especially Mayer and Teel. So the hope is he becomes a Free Agent the year after and we swoop in.
Anyway, I really would like the team concentrate on Yamamoto. Watching the playoffs, it is obvious without pitchers who can dominate good line-ups you might as well stay home or go to Vegas. I became more intrigued of our chances when I found we have someone on our roster who is a friend of this 25-year old stud.
We still need a righthanded power hitter!!

I agree we have way too many left-handed hitting outfielders, especially. I started this argument but I have no interest in moving Mayer or Anthony for Soto. I do think we try to move Verdugo and Yoshida for pitching. Casas is not going anywhere. I really hate the idea of someone being JUST a DH. I was, as most of you, excited to see what Yoshida could do, and I believe he will be better next year after experiencing the number of games and all the flying, but I'd explore it. IMO we need a young star like Soto but only if we stay away from moving our top 2 prospects. Was David Ortiz just a DH? I get your point but wow, what a DH Ortiz was. Soto could eventually be in that class or he could man LF the way Manny did for a long time. If Manny wasnt a DH, then I dont know who is, lol. Hard to imagine Soto being much worse. LOL! Agree. Ortiz was a unicorn. I would love to see a roster with everyone being able to contribute defensively to a degree. It is a great luxury to use the DH as a way to get a player off their feet somewhat but still keep their bat in the line-up. After watching our overall defense this year, I'm not thrilled about having someone who HAS to DH!
