Not to be greedy, but there's more family business still to be settled...I'd like to see the Red Sox follow up on the NYY four game throat-punch, by sweeping BAL, to send them reeling...
...oh...and a four game lead over TOR, come Sept 30th,please; whatever that "magic number" is, I'd like to see that go to zero by then, setting up for a Fenway/Papi Lovefest, that final regular season series, as the Sox set their rotation for CLE!

If JF had, instead of the line-up posted for tonight, moved Mookie to 2B for the game, Benintendi to OF, and MH to bench, how would that move have been regarded.

I agree. No doubt he is in serious consideration based on what you've said. Even Baseball Tonight - the two analysts were touting him as the leader for CY. It doesn''t mean they are right. But many of feel he is a serious contender. That's the point.
And what a job tonight. Porcello is and has been a monster.
__ And I want to also add I've been a JF basher- John Farrell handling the staff beautiful lately. The September callus plus Koji coming back has been a huge help for Sox. I still don't agree with some of the things he does- but I do agree with his aggressive handling of the bullpen lately.
The Cy Young dosnt go to necessarily the best pitcher, but the one that had the best season. History shows that voters like wins. 20 win seasons gets you votes. ...and I'd be surprised if garnering media time, in multiples down the stretch, like on BBTN, didn't in and of itself, tip voters...

Apparently a case may be made, in a few minutes, on ESPN's Baseball Tonight, for Porcello as Cy Young, per Karl Ravech's tweet/tease -
"Dodgers/Giants in progress. Jays/M's in progress. Rangers walk it off. Did Porcello win Cy Young tonight? Noah nightmare. On @bbtn 12et E2"

Adam looked at little Andrew Benintendi and decided to play really shallow ... Benny lined it over his head. ...and, nice to see him wheeling into 2nd, seemingly w/o any lingering effects.

Anyone w/ a friendly reminder on the Spring Training/early season "potential trade" discussion and the Sox player acquisition cost that was speculating on, at that time? ("phew"...though understanding the CC event was random)

Seeing as we've reeled in CLE, being only 1 GB, is there any value to press for the extra Home game, or not so much, esp considering their respective schedules, RoS? (as an aside, anyone lend a hand on the recent 108 Stitches link to June hitting adj by Hanley?...I've deleted that email, and can't find the thread here, I saw that in) Ideally I like to see the season end: 1. Texas 2. Boston 3. Cleveland 4. WC Teams For a while I had been cheering for the Red Sox to catch Texas but now that I think about it, I would rather play Cleveland first round than either of the Wild Card winners. 100% agree...and even if 2/3 are flipped, CLE will need to juggle their rotation, having lost both Salazar & Carrasco... ...which has nothing to do with my considering a trip Oct 7-10, to see TB12/NE @ CLE, and that something like a shot at catching a game or two of that potential ALDS being a tipping point!

Agree...(and don't we owe them a late season four game sweep, from a few seasons back?) Oh yes. IIRC, the series I'm thinking of was a Sept five game sweep, in 2006(?), that effectively ended the Sox playoff hopes, that season, as opposed to the '78 "Boston Massacre", where NYY came in four behind and left tied... ...but, yes, while Sox may never draw even, it'd be great to see them keep the pressure on the rest of the Division, while dashing any 2016 NYY playoff hopes.

GREAT WIN! Finish them tomorrow and truly end their season. Go Tampa. Go Angels. Agree...(and don't we owe them a late season four game sweep, from a few seasons back?)

Here's what Pete Abraham tweeted on that play...
"Betts scored on a wild pitch. Then Hanley tried to score from second and was out. Hanley makes you earn his love."

Off the tape it seemed if he kept going straight around 3rd, he might've made it...things in the crowd calmed down enough...Giradi yelled to prompt Romine, and it was still very close...

POST GAME comments on NESN. Brief exchange about the Holt attempt of home... -
Cafardo: "John...the caught stealing at home...you weren't successful...but that fire up the team a little bit?...you, think?"
JF: "I think that's a good baseball play...uh..Aaron Loop is very tough...and extremely tough on Jackie, as history shows...I think if Brick waits a count longer, where Aaron picks up his leg, into his delivery, I think he makes it...he broke just a tick too soon...no issues...I thought it was a good baseball play"
another reporter, next question: "...that called or he pick that up on his own?"
JF: "in our advance meetings there are things that we highlight...we haven't done it often...if at all...but...he's one of the guys you look to possibly take advantage of..."
"Me" - Since he didn't explicitly answer the actual question, would a reasonable interpretation of that be that some plays are "called" during a pregame meeting, including, which TOR pitchers, and which Sox runners, and situations, that might come into play as an opp...and then certain runners are allowed to take things into their own hands?...
...and/or, with an "in-game" sign, that is more of a "reminder" that with the opp now actually presenting itself, as opposed to an in-game call to go on a certain pitch...
(or was it JF simply/deftly framing it a way that answered the question, while also respecting the player and the staff?...)

Not wanting to put words in anyone's mouth; is it that he stretched his bench, dipping into the pool of available pitchers, that is most problematic, or his choice of pitchers? That JF could've/should've, on analysis, better mitigated the type of risks jmei recognized? If this were, say, Joe Maddon - if the move was even being second guessed, would it more likely be focused on his choice of pitchers, alone, w/ the choice of strategy not at all being questioned? thebiglead.com/2016/08/01/cubs-pitcher-travis-wood-excels-left-field-makes-joe-maddon-look-like-a-genius/Has JM, relative to JF, been luckier that the inherent risks (to my recollection) not materialized, as it did w/ Wright, or is part of his "genius" that in his decisions, he is better at factoring in risk? (e.g. we would assume that he would've PR Pomeranz)

"How might the standings be different if each team had held onto its original players without dealing them away over the years?... In the absence of any high-pressure, high-leverage series to pick apart, we have time to look into something a little more, let’s say, unconventionally relevant: How might the standings be different if each team had held onto its original players without dealing them away over the years? Thanks to data from The Baseball Gauge, we can take a stab at that question. The site tracks how many wins above replacement (WAR) have been produced by players who were originally drafted (or otherwise acquired) by each franchise, which can be easily converted into wins and losses. Here’s how each division would look if teams were stocked exclusively with homegrown players:..." fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-the-mlb-standings-would-look-if-teams-stuck-with-whoever-they-drafted/

Considering Bradley is a lot cheaper, has more team control, is younger, and produced roughly the same value this year (4.6 bWAR to 5.0), I wouldn't make that trade straight up. Never mind also including prospects. you've more company - ..."Obviously, the price for a Sale or Quintana was always going to be high, but reputation and a longer track record are the only things that would keep Bradley-for-Sale (or Quintana) from being seen as a reasonable 1-for-1 deal. Based only on their play in 2016, neither is clearly more valuable than the other. Then you start throwing prospects in, and looking at contract situations, where Bradley is under team control for longer at a lower cost?" www.overthemonster.com/2016/9/2/12769534/chris-sale-trade-jose-quintana-red-sox-white-sox-jackie-bradley-jr

I had been wondering if the pitch count had more latitude tonight and yesterday, in consideration of effectively having a one-off 6 man turn through the rotation, going w/ Clay, Sunday, and dropping ERod back into the rotation, behind him.
Also thought, given bottom 9, that they might walk EL, w/ first open and two out.
