Keith Law holding back no punches when it comes to his analysis of the Sox draft: theathletic.com/1868430/2020/06/12/law-team-by-team-mlb-draft-analysis-american-league/"Boston Red Sox Boston went way off the highway with Nick Yorke (1), the only player taken in round one who wasn’t ranked on my Top 100. Yorke has a good swing, geared more for average than power, but he doesn’t have the range or arm for shortstop after a shoulder injury and is probably limited to second base in the long term. Even if the Red Sox really believe in his bat, he would almost certainly have been available at their next pick; I spoke to multiple teams who said they either didn’t have him in the top three rounds or deemed him unsignable for worth due to his commitment to Arizona. The Red Sox didn’t have a second-round pick, and in the third round they took one of the most famous players in the draft in Blaze Jordan (3), a 17-year-old high school first baseman from Mississippi who puts on a great BP but has little game power because of a swing that is all hands, making no use of his lower half. He’s limited to first base, so he has to get to that power to be a prospect. The history of high school position players from Mississippi is also pretty dismal, so I think Jordan is a prospect, but a longshot. They followed it up with Hawai’i reliever Jeremy Wu-Yelland (4), who has walked 55 guys in 88 career innings, almost all in relief; and Florida State lefty Shane Drohan (5), a fastball/changeup guy who went backward after going to Tallahassee and has walked 69 in 73.2 career innings."

I think it boils down to that the owners are only willing to pay players for 50-ish games based on the current circumstances and they think they can run out the clock long enough that this will ultimately be the only option left, outside of no season at all. By submitting proposals (even though they know they won't be accepted) they are covering their butts enough if/when the union sues them.

Karl Ravech reporting that MLB owner have offered a counter proposal to the players for a 76 game season which pays players a 75% prorated amount of their salaries, essentially 57 games worth. Offer includes playoff pool money and draft pick comp wouldn't be tied to free agency signs in the offseason. This offer is negligibly different than the 50 game proposal being floated around. It doesn't seem to me that the owners have any real intention of having baseball this season with an offer like this more than a week into June.

Maybe if he could demonstrate that he's capable of keeping his BB/9 under 5.0 for a period of time rather than 8.0 then that could be a realistic idea....

www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28985240/aj-hinch-jeff-luhnow-suspensions-fulfilled-2020-even-season-canceledLuhnow and Hinch's suspensions will not toll into next season if the 2020 season is cancelled. Cora's suspension had better be treated in the same manner, although I suspect his suspension will be for more than 1 season. MLB's completed their investigation but based on the current environment it would be a little tone deaf to release it now but that shouldn't negatively impact Cora more than he's going to get whacked anyway.

Roenicke confirmed to Speier this morning that Sale will be starting the season on the IL. Hope is it's just two weeks to build up his strength lost due to pneumonia.

Not sure who this is directed at but if it's me, are you seriously arguing that you think there's no correlation between improved strength and conditioning in athletes and the prevention of sports related injuries? I'm seriously arguing that you don't know exactly how much he weighs. Obviously nobody thinks the guy's 155lbs. Work on that sarcasm meter a bit. But he's always been a frail framed pitcher at 6'6" so coming into camp with an illness that notoriously causes weight/strength loss puts him at a disadvantage from the jump. He's literally one of the last players you'd want coming into Spring Training in that situation after two seasons in which he's broken down mid season.

Yeah, let's just guess and assume we're right. Not sure who this is directed at but if it's me, are you seriously arguing that you think there's no correlation between improved strength and conditioning in athletes and the prevention of sports related injuries?

Sale coming into camp battling flu/pneumonia really isn't the start we needed. So instead of coming into camp at 170lbs soaking wet he's probably at like 155 when he should be at 200+ to withstand a full season's workload. Yes because it’s his weight and not his elbow and/or shoulder that prevents him from being effective late in the season. Call me an optimist, but somehow I doubt Sale having the flu in mid February is going to impact his pitching performance in September. Actually, yeah it is. If he had more bulk and muscle supporting his frame, ligaments, and tendons, his elbow/shoulder would be more likely to handle more strain. Physiology, weird!

Apparently Verdugo is being given #12 to wear, so that would make you think that they don't plan on bringing back Brock Holt, not that you can't bring him back, but it doesn't sound like it's in the plans unfortunately. FWIW, Downs is being assigned #20 and Wong #30. I think the Peraza signing makes bringing Holt back a pretty redundant move. They've both got the positional flexibility you want for a bench piece while projection systems expect slightly better offensive output from Peraza at the cost of slightly worse defense.

Walker back to the Mariners on a one year $2 million dollar deal. I think he would have been a good flier but sounds like Roenicke is pretty content using an opener for the #5 starter. Things could get really ugly with the Sox rotation is Perez flames out and any of the top 3 guys are injured for any prolonged period of time. They've got paper thin depth at this point.

With Graterol being called up on 9/1/19 last year would the Sox be able to manipulate his service time enough to gain an extra year of eligibility? There's no way they'd keep him down until June is there?

Brb, gonna go play with the trade simulator and cry. Be optimistic. Maybe Myers has a Beltre-like resurgence, minus the defense of course. If only Myers didn't have twice the career K% rate Beltre had. Myers has always had a high K% rate but the increase in the last two seasons is baffling. Swinging strike % last year was 13.6%. Ouch!

Because he wants to make that extra $70mil? Isn’t that how Negotiations usually work I make u an offer u counter And we usually meet in the middle somewhere?? Not when all he has to do is wait out one more season and then someone will be willing to give him that extra $70mil.

Sad but necessary. The Patriots have placed the fan base on the defensive forever by holding onto the cheating head coach. The RS chose to part ways and show no tolerance for the lack of integrity. I like Cora but I can't fault the org here. This decision has nothing to do with the Patriots and how they've handled their issues. If anything, using that logic, wouldn't that embolden the Red Sox to hold onto Cora if they still felt as though he could help the organization win and play at a high level?

A brief respite from the impending doomsday clock hitting Midnight for Cora and the Red Sox... Does anyone else feel that Josh Donaldson at this point is costing himself money by not accepting the biggest offer he has right now? Donaldson to Twins on a 4 year deal. $92M guaranteed with a fifth year option that can get it to $100M. Decent pull for a guy who's 34.

I guess the luxury tax implications would be less important now if they decide to stay way over since losing the 10 spots in the draft looks pretty moot now.

Exactly a month since Ortiz was shot and still in the hospital as far as I know. Somewhat surprising considering he was listed as stable like 3 weeks ago. I'm sure it's a long road ahead to recovery and I hope he's able to be released soon.

So Benintendi is out out the lineup again today. Dealing with some sort of injury we don't know about?
EDIT: Cora saying Beni is "banged up". Let's hope the rest from now until the London series has him ready for the start of those games.

Question regarding Chris Murphy. He's currently projected on this site to sign for slot which is $237K. He's a college junior and a higher ranked prospect than both Groshans and Bell per BA & PG. Both those kids signed for over $300K. Why would Murphy sign for less than that if he seems just as deserving, if not more so, of that kind of money? Just thinking it may throw a wrench in the available cap money when trying to sign others.
