Pretty interesting are Jackie's batting splits home and away. You couple his hitting at Fenway along with the big RF cover responsibilities and it's hard to take him out of the lineup when the team is home against a RH starter. The offensive road numbers are terrible I'll grant you. Also I have to feel that having JBJ back, along with the defensive upgrade at 2B with Story, along with better defensive play by Devers and Xander - this has REALLY helped the pitching. Other than some botched plays in April and early May, this team has played pretty well defensively. that's reasonable. Ha. I just not sure it is worth a 25 man roster spot. Good thing rosters are 26 players then

When the Sox traded Mookie was there ever any talk of getting Gavin Lux instead of Downs in that deal? Lux looks like he’s going to be a player. Lux was the number 2 prospect in baseball at the time, so I doubt he was ever even part of the conversation.

Even with this lead, feels like they've blown three or four layups already. Feels like more to me, but that makes the fact that they are up 15 after one quarter even crazier. If they keep this pace and continue playing great defense they have a great chance. Only question is will they do it consistently enough over the final three quarters.

After game 2 and coming back to Boston I was over confident and the C's obviously were also. Can't let that happen again they need to put the pedal to the metal and close this out. Then hopefully the NBA gives them a break with the schedule so they have a few days because I have very little hope that Dallas will win in GS. I also hope the NBA learned a lesson and has more than 1 night off during the finals, like maybe 2 days in between the travel days at the start of the series. I also hope Brown will learn his lesson about driving into the teeth unless he can realize they are collapsing on him and dish to the open guy. The C's "should" have this but give Miami credit, if you look at that roster you don't think yeah they are a #1 seed type of team. Oladipo is the only top 10 pick on the team, Butlers intensity drives their engine glad he isn't in Philly. The finals schedule has been out for a bit now: Game 1: 6/2 Game 2: 6/5 Game 3: 6/8 Game 4: 6/10 Game 5: 6/13 Game 6: 6/16 Game 7: 6/19

Apple only for the game? Seriously? I have to do a free trial? Such BS You don’t need a free trial to watch it. The games on Apple TV+ (at least for now) aren’t behind the paywall. I think maybe this season they are free and then next season onward you probably need Apple TV+

Whitlock sucks what can we get for him It has become clear that it will be the rare start in which a Sox pitcher goes more than 60-65 pitches. Cora is kicking himself for letting Whitlock go beyond that. Or maybe it is Dave O’Brien who caused it. In 24 games so far, Sox starters have thrown less than 70 pitches by my count in only 8 games, so I wouldn’t exactly call it rare for a pitcher to thrown more than 60-65. That’s especially true when you consider out of those 8, 2 were because Pivetta was pitching badly and two more were Whitlock's first two starts where he had a pitch limit.

How many homers do you think Story will hit?..I would like to see him get a hit first.lol He got a hit in his first spring game. As for HRs, put me down for 25-30.

Thanks -- appreciate the warm welcome.
I believe the qualifying offer system is dead next offseason as well, per the new CBA, right?
Pretty sure you are correct yes. Only if they agree to an International Draft by some already agreed upon date in July. If not, then the current system stays in place.

Does anyone really think it's difficult for a very good defensive SS to move to 2b? Tired of this point in every article. Iglesias did it with one day of practice. The only difference besides much easier throws and being able to take a lot more time making them is turning a double play. You do realize you are talking of one of the best defenders in MLB and some of the best hands in the last 20 years... Story has a throwing issue If he is still having throwing issues than moving to 2B is just going to help him. Story is also one of the best defensive SS in the majors.

That all could definitely be true, but I really doubt Boras has anything to do with it. If he did, I doubt Xander would have signed his previously contract to begin with. While I don’t think it’s realistic that he stays at this point, I would not at all be surprised if he works out an extension that pays him a bit more than he is getting now, especially considering his comments when he signed his previous extension. However, it’s hard to say if the team would want to do that or not at this point. Xander's contract was team friendly, but it's worth remembering that he wasn't offensive juggernaut he is now when he signed that deal. His performance since then is the biggest factor in why the deal is such a bargain. Everything I've heard from him suggests he does want to stay, though. Hopefully we can bridge the gap. Agreed! I definitely get the feeling he genuinely wants to be here long term. There’s a lot of factors that play into that though. We will have to wait and see!

if that is the case, would you take X or Story, generally interested in what you think. That is basically what this boils down to, if X leaves. I would be surprised if X can be signed for a similarly friendly deal, especially given his agent (Boras) and the weak FA market expected next year. For that reason, I think it's likely X will go to a higher bidder and Story will be the long term SS. Given that we have an alternative at SS now, there's no reason for Bloom to overpay to bring him back. Any deal that keeps him here would have to be fair. That said, I would still love to have X back. We'll see how good his 2022 is and what kind of contract he's looking for! I'm also curious if he'd be more likely to want to stay if we lock up Devers, and vice versa. I think you are missing out on the thought of Xander ending his career in the OF, it is an option for a 33 yr old whose strongest traits are at the plate. And whose SS D is already limited. And although I don't love the idea but if that infield of the future continues to shine it could be how you get an ace in a trade. The Sox haven't developed an ace in a long time nor do they have one in the minors. Hopefully they won't be drafting high enough in the future to draft one either so it is either a trade or a 35 million dollar FA. voice...the only problem with that he is on the record and not wanting any part of a position change, said so recently. He is gonna go where he can play SS and I think there are teams that will let him. He didn’t exactly say that he would never change positions. He basically said that he’s a SS and focused on being a SS. I’m pretty sure he also said something like no one on the team has even came to him about changing positions, so why would he even be thinking about that. He very well could want to stay at SS his entire career. That’s obviously up to him mostly. But I wouldn’t exactly say he outright said he would never change positions. As with everything, things can change with time. I would not be at all surprised if he signed an extension and agreed to move positions, just like I also wouldn’t be surprised if he signs a huge free agent contract to play SS somewhere else.

Its not like they can't offer the QO to Story in the offseason. Just sign him please. Stop being cheap. Except they can’t...it can only be offered once and Colorado offered it to him this offseason. That’s completely ignoring the fact that the qualifying offer could be gone next offseason as well. Also not sure what being cheap has to do with it if he truly doesn’t want to move off SS which he has already stated.

Pretty crazy that Suzuki is meeting with the Cubs after he allegedly agreed to terms with the Padres a few hours ago. Also surprised to hear that his reps didn't tell him Chicago is not known for their warm weather. His Instagram account denied reports earlier that he has come to a decision already.

He played in 75 games. Had a bad back. WAR is a cumulative statistic. My god man, just accept that he’s a bonafide top 10 SS. Not that hard! Anderson (28): 693 G / 17.0 WAR = 40.8 G/WAR Bogaerts (29): 1114 G / 29.2 WAR = 38.2 G/WAR Baez (29): 862 G / 23.4 WAR = 36.8 G/WAR Semien (31): 1020 G / 28.7 WAR = 35.5 G/WAR Seager (27): 636 G / 21.3 WAR = 29.9 G/WAR Lindor (28): 902 G / 31.1 WAR = 29.0 G/WAR Story (29): 745 G / 26.7 WAR = 27.9 G/WAR Turner (28): 689 G / 24.7 WAR = 27.9 G/WAR Bichette (24): 234 G / 9.3 WAR = 25.2 G/WAR Correa (26): 752 G / 34.1 WAR = 22.1 G/WAR Tatis (23): 273 G / 13.6 WAR = 20.1 G/WAR Franco (21): 70 G / 3.5 WAR = 20.0 G/WAR ^from notstarboards reply to you earlier in this thread. Saying “1 year does not make a good player” is INSANE when referencing Carlos Correa. Acting like he did nothing until his contract year lol. I mean cmon man This doesn’t even factor him being a massively clutch player So your saying he’s a better player and should be ranked above tatis and wander? Come on man Your own list you showed had him at 10. Above tatis and wander. No way would I rather have Correa than tatis or wander. Debatable Anyways. You stick to your thinking. I’ll simply say he’s debatable top 10. And I want him to be the best shortstop. I like him as a player That’s not what that chart says at all. It’s says he has the third best WAR per game rate behind only Wander and Tatis.

From the article I posted above. Latin players think the draft would further limit their initial earnings compared to American players of equal or even less talent. The draft would have to offer the same slot values. I (strongly) doubt that's part of the owners' proposal, but if it is it behooves them to get that information out. “When (the Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr.) signs for ($7.79 million) as a high-school shortstop (in 2019), then the No. 1 player in the Dominican Republic should be signing for something similar,” Cabrera said. “And if they’re not signing for something similar, you’ve got to have a pretty good reason why a kid in the Dominican Republic who has just as much skill as the American version is receiving $2 million to $3 million less than his counterpart, if you don’t have an excuse like, ‘We’ve got to stop the underhanded dealings out there.’” Are you related to any of these players? What do you care what they make?…..or are you all nosy or board? Legitimate question. Vote 1 for nosy or 2 for board. That’s what you got from that post? It was asked how an international draft would hurt the system and players and he answered with what the players point of view is. Whether he is related to players or not, that’s literally the thinking behind their concerns; a valid concern for players to have.

At this point it honestly just seems like you want to argue for the sake of arguing, so I’m not sure there is much else to be said. The offer wasn’t “here is $230 million, we done?”. An international draft is a huge part of that and will take time to discuss and plan out if it is ever even agreed upon. To expect it to be over at this point makes no sense. I’m not the one that made that statement. And honestly the international draft was proposed at the point that statement was made. So who’s arguing here?? I agree it is a big part as are other parts and it wasn’t just get to that number and it would be done. That’s my point. It wasn’t as simple as just get to $230 and darn those owners anyways. Except no one said that it was that simple. Just because someone doesn’t explicitly state something doesn’t mean it isn’t inherently known. Everyone knows that there are more things to talk about than just the CBT. However, the CBT has been known to be the biggest sticking point; that’s why that has been one of the biggest things talked about. It’s also different when other things are attached to that offer. If I tell you I will do your chores for $10 and you agree, but also tell me I have to do your math homework as well or no deal then that doesn’t mean I am automatically accepting it. And judging by the latest MLBPA offer that was posted not too long ago, both sides are making movement as they should be (I saw in a previous post you said only one side is doing so, which clearly isn’t true now). At this point it very much looks like it is going to come to that 230-240 range in the end most likely.

That is extremely disingenuous though as it’s not taking the whole picture of the offer. Yes, if the offer was only 230-240 million then it may very well be done. But there are a lot of other things that are attached to that offer that need to be discussed and looked into. You can’t just look at it and say “well why isn’t it done then” when the various strings attached are also of importance. And yet I believe the exact words were “ if mlb were to offer $230 this would be done”. They have and it’s not. My point is there should be moving parts back and forth and it seems the players are “getting” a lot more than giving ( which maybe they should given wins of owners over past 4 years). But they keep asking for more and more and more gives. And it’s not simply owners not giving in on the $230 million cbt as was mentioned by many.

I think the owners are perfectly willing to outlast players and cancel the April games. It's cold that month and fans are more interested in the hockey and basketball playoffs. I think it's been in their plan all along to get what they want. Now, if it goes into May, things might change a bit. But, they're counting on starving players to finally agree to something and start playing and getting paid again. Owners don't starve. Someone, actually many people said “ if mlb got the cbt to $230 million this would all be done now and we would be playing baseball”. Guess what: mlb owners are at $230 million and so far nothing. I highly doubt owners have some dastardly plan to hurt their players they pay millions to. I do think they have leverage ( which anyone who has been in negotiations knows you need and use to win a negotiation). And players are using their leverage back ( not playing). We also have history. Decades of history with history books and elders sharing how horrible owners were to players pre free agency and even with collusion. I’m glad to see owners come up to a point this could get done. Let’s hope no games are canceled and their is compromise. That is extremely disingenuous though as it’s not taking the whole picture of the offer. Yes, if the offer was only 230-240 million then it may very well be done. But there are a lot of other things that are attached to that offer that need to be discussed and looked into. The union is dead set against this? Do you mean the owners? Because there is no way the owners would have enough votes to agree with a salary floor, especially at the level you are proposing. Where has it been said that the union is against a salary floor? I’m honestly asking because I haven’t seen that and logic would say that they would love more teams spending more more, which is what a salary floor would result in. At the very beginning of this back in November before the league locked them out the owners offered them a floor. The union is absolutely against a floor of any type because they know it comes with a cap and they are against a cap so hard. They would take a floor without a cap ( which isn’t going to happen). That was 1000% offered and reported several times back in November. Sorry I was wrong. August. Players were offered a cap of $180 which is a cut of $30 million ( but keep in mind floor would explode). Granted the cap was low but that could be negotiated up! Why wasn’t it worked with? Players want no part of that cap but sure would love a floor www.si.com/.amp/mlb/2021/08/18/mlb-proposes-salary-floor-lower-luxury-tax-mlbpaThanks for the link, did not see that previously! You say that it could be negotiated up, but that’s really not evident by what has been happening recently. The owners have barely moved on the luxury tax from what I have seen. I mean offering a couple years in a row of flat luxury tax levels is ridiculous and shows how hardheaded they are being about this. Yes, the players need to budge on their end as well, but I haven’t seen any willingness from the owners to do that at this point at this point. If they would meet somewhere in the middle at 230-240 million or so I have a feeling it would already be done.

I'm convinced the majority of the owners have seen the Rays' and Oak's success on very little investment and are saying to themselves, "Why spend the money?" This includes the owners who never spent the money to start. They just wanted that model to become a league-wide norm so they can keep collecting more and more revenue and give the players less and less of it. Just my opinion. Then accept a floor level and in return agree to a cap level. But union wants both sides of coin. Agree to cap of $210-$220 and floor of $125 or more. But union is dead set against this The union is dead set against this? Do you mean the owners? Nope, it's not. Sorry Phil, my morals aren't compromised by a game or fandom. I'm disappointed but not shocked that yours are. I didn't even want Braiser back on this team, I was glad when karma sent a ball to his racist face. I wince every time I remember Schilling was a part of 04. It concerns me that almost every black star in MLB has a NO BOSTON clause in their contract. You may want to ignore that because you don't care or it isn't relevant to the game thread (which btw is your chicken shit way of hiding from a subject you either don't want to admit to is an issue, or don't want to fix because you support systemic abuse as long as it is in your favor). The point stands, I don't like Correa, I think he's dirty, and I don't want dirty players on my team, even if they could help me win. I hold no romance for Schilling, Manny, hell, even Big Papi is a ? although at least he's not a complete douche bag in real life. I personally would rather have guys I want to root for. Now the argument could be made that we know too much about our players and it makes it hard to like them because they are surprisingly... human, and thus flawed in ways we don't like to admit that our heroes or politicians are, sure, that would be an honest take. I acknowledge that this is WAAY off track from the 2021 gameday thread, but I will not sit here and be attacked by you and then be told "keep it on topic" as a way to shield you. You want to be a jerk, fine, don't respond to my posts and I'll ignore yours but I've had enough of your arrogance. You both seem to be saying very similar things. Maybe not for the same reasons, but that you root for the team, not necessarily the individual players...

lowkey hoping he chooses to opt out I second that not a clutch hitter he has his moments, but not worth the 30 million he will command. The $30 million he will command? He’s signed for $20 million... Also love the claim that he’s not a clutch hitter. What is that even supposed to mean? I’m willing to bet there’s plenty of stats out there that prove that to be completely false.
