From Ben Badler, here is a potential lottery ticket that the Red Sox should request from the Cardinals....
Ben Badler?@benbadler·1 hr If the Red Sox are talking to the Cardinals about Jake Peavy, if I'm Boston, I want Edmundo Sosa tacked on to that deal. Young SS can hit.

I don't know where to begin there.. Start with Cesar Geronimo, Larry Bowa, Mark Belanger. We can even go right now with Darwin Barney, who is probably one of the worst hitters in the game. Who says you have to hit to win a GG? Derek Jeter. Heck, Jeter didn't even have to field to win all those gold gloves.

The games are tough to watch as is, so adding a knuckler and watching Pierzynski miss every other pitch would make any game in which Wright pitches unwatchable.

Thinking about teams like the Red Sox and MFYs which will be limited to signing any one individual player up to $ 300 k for the next two years given that they exceeded their assigned bonus allotment. Ben Badler wrote this article last year about how teams either have or could work around these restrictions by signing lesser talented players with the same trainer for higher bonuses which could then be funneled back to more talented players with the same agent. It would be difficult for MLB to prove if they thought a team has done this. www.baseballamerica.com/international/how-teams-can-stretch-their-international-budgets/

5 years $ 130 million, with an option of $27.5 million based on average 175 innings pitched in Years 4 and 5.

The Red Sox could not justify trading away Peavy, Gomes, Herrera, Breslow, Pierzynski, Drew, etc and bring up guys like Roberts, Hassan, Butler, etc who have limited talent and will not be part of a solution to field a competitive team for 2014 and beyond. Hopefully Brentz and Middkebrooks get healthy soon and they are able to get ABs between now and the end of the 2014 season along with Webster and Ranaudo. Given the debacle with the Lester negotiations it will also be prudent to trade him for the best available offer. I would think that they could get a nice package from a team like the Cardinals which has a number of close to MLB ready position players and pitchers and which has an obvious heed for starting pitching .

I am all for getting all the dead weight off the Red Sox roster including Peavy, Pierzynski, Gomes, Breslow, Herrera, etc. If they can get back some salary relief and a lottery prospect or two all the better. Might as well trade Lester as well as it doesn't apoear as if the Red Sox ownership is willing to offer him anything close to the going rate for a starting pitcher of his pedigree.

Yet another new low for the 2014 Red Sox losing a three game series to the Cubs at home. Time for a clearance sale to get rid of Peavy, Gomes, Pierzynski, etc.

Larry I agree the lack on intensity and focus on the part of the majority of the Red Sox batters is downright embarrassing for guys who are supposed to be professionals. I feel bad for the Red Sox pitchers for the lack of support. The Red Sox fans who paid top dollar for tickets in 2014 also deserve an apology for such pathetic performance by this team.

It has gotten to the point that I watch less and less of each passing Red Sox game this year. This team is not worth investing 3 or 4 hours on a daily basis. It is much more enjoyable watching baseball on ESPN or MLB. At thus point I am sick of guys like Ortiz making excuses for the sorry state of the Red Sox. This is about as bad a team as 2012 with the exception that BobbyV is not around to throw everyone under the bus.

Can we please start talking about steak instead of Wally and Clark? Edit: or wardrobes? Do yourself a favor and turn down the NESN sound. I have done this for years after getting annoyed with inane banter between Orsillo and Remy which detracts from the game.

Just when you think that this offense has sunk to a new low they take it to an even lower level. It has gotten to the point that I would rather watch American Ninja that watch these guys flail away against guys like Nuno who has been treated like a punching bag by the rest of the league. Pathetic is too kind of a word to describe how bad this offense is for the Red Sox. www.baseball-reference.com/teams/split.cgi?t=b&team=BOS&year=2014

I also hadn't read anything that would suggest that Alvarado has definatively stated that he is going to Nebraska. There appears to possibly be more money available than we all first thought after the announcements of the recent signings of Cosart and Whitson. It could come down to signing either Steen or Alvarado or some combination of a couple of other guys who ranked lower. I would like to see them sign Alvarado who appears to be a very good athlete. Check out this video of Alvarado which is pretty impressive, although you usually don't see both the batter and batting practice pitcher both stop to watch how far each hit goes. Alvarado appears to have a frame in which he could add another 15 to 20 pounds of muscle which will help him with more power.

It's good to see all the "end of the world" negativity is back in this town lol. I know we won the World Series last year, but everyone on this team is garbage. Let's trade Lester, Lackey, Pedroia, Ortiz (hell, anyone over 25 yrs old gets the boot). Then let's tank for the #1 overall pick so we can get a shiny new prospect to talk about. Some of you guys are really unbelievable. They are 6 games back of the Wild Card with half a season to go. There are ways to both add and subtract to help the team in both the short term and long term . They gave Buccholz coming back soon however based on his performance and contract you are not going to get much for him. Conversely if they trade Peavy for an OF prospect it will help the current team by freeing up a rotation spot to keep RDLR in there where get belongs while acquiring a an OF who could help the team over a longer term period. There are plenty of teams such as the Pirates, A 's, and Blue Jats which need another starter.

Any way creating possibilities to help the red sox is welcome, although I am a bit worried about the power departement, when thinking on RedSox OF of Cecchini/Betts/Holt Anything is an improvement over the current sorry lot of Red Sox OF. The time is nearing to clean house of most of the upcoming free agents and bring up some of the younger guys like Betts, Cecchini, Webster, etc. to get acclimated to the majors.

Lots of frustration with the Red Sox which is understandable particularly given how poorly they have played, especially on offense. I am trying to focus more this year on the Red Sox minor leaguers for which there is much promise with guys like Bettts, Ranaudo, Coyle, Johnson, Margot, Devers and lots of the recently drafted guys such as Longhi, Chavis, Travis, etc. Summer is finally here and there are lots of great venues to enjoy watching the next generation of Red Sox play.
Focusing more on the Red Sox minor league system is helping me to avoid the day to day frustration of the parent Red Sox. It's worth a try as the alternative of getting angry/ frustrated with the Red Sox this year is neither enjoyable or healthy.

Last night was probably a new low for the Red Sox offense. If you can't crush a pitcher like Mills who was recently traded for a $ 1, then every one in the lineup should hang their heads in shame.

There were comments from a poster who said he was from Cuba who said the Tomas could be as good as Viciedo or as bad as Linares ( taking in consideration it was an anonymous poster). Law wrote that he has talked to a number of scouts who said that Tomas is not as good as either Puig or Abreu, good power, slow bat, below average defense, bad body , and project as low OBP with questions on whether he can hit major league hitting. So this guy is niot the next Puig, Abreu, or even Reddick for that matter. He appears to more like Willy Mo Pena. I would pass as he likely get a bonus significantly more than he is worth.

This guy on OTM says he lives in Cuba and comps him more to ViciedoHe also compared him to Juan Carlos Linares which would certainly be damning someone with faint praise. For every Puig or Abreau coming from Cuba there are many more busts like Linares, Hinojosa, Viciedo, etc. it is even worse now that agents like Borass, Jay z, etc driving up the prices for even mediocre international players.

It is also important to note that the guys who get the top international signing bonuses are not guaranteed to be all-stars or even make the majors. Check out this article from 2008 which outlines the top paid bonuses that year. I can't recognize anyone of those players who has made any significant contribution in the majors to date or who ever will. Conversely there are guys like Gregory Polanco who was signed for $150k who has the potential to be a perennial all star over the next 10 to 15 years. In the opposite direction the Red Sox signed Hinojosa for $4 million last October and he looks to be a journeyman pitcher that you could sign as a minor league free agent for short money any year. m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2008/09/Issue-10/The-Back-Of-The-Book/Top-Signing-Bonuses-During-Mlbs-International-Signing-Period.aspx?
