One rainout complete in the Eduardo, pray for rain, pray for rain, pray for rain, pray for rain proposed rotation.

Why is Denny Bautista pitching in Hi-A games?
How long is JAAckie BrAAdley going to toil in AAA before they trade him somewhere he can be a useful player?
Is it a good sign or a bad sign that Allen Craig has an 887 OPS in AAA?
Javier Guerra with homers in back-to-back games. Is he really 155 pounds?

P.S. if the Red Sox had decided to DFA the entire starting rotation on Opening Day and merely promoted the Pawsox starters to Boston how would their record differ?

So is E-Rod's next start in the majors or the bucket? Yes. Probably in the minors until his rotation spot lines up with Joe Kelly's.

But Rodriguez is a lefty who is making his major league debut, and Abe Alvarez is also a lefty who once made his major league debut. Also, the last two letters in their surnames are "e z." Also, both begin their first names with a vowel. You can't deny the connection. Abe Alvarez was once a top-ranked Red Sox pitching prospect, JUST. LIKE. RODRIGUEZ! And all top prospects are alike, no matter the year. You know, there are still plenty of reasons to avoid panic around the Sox, and if last year didn't happen, I wouldn't be more than vaguely concerned. But this year feels so much like last year, it's hard to avoid the feeling that they will end up the same. Of course, that's a silly reason in a lot of ways (totally different team, I'm going off a sample size of one, etc, etc), but there ya go ... I think that's a pretty common reason for the panic, beyond the usual over-heated nature of Sox fans. I'm in between panic and confusion; I just don't see how a team with Ortiz, Napoli, Betts, Bogaerts, Sandoval, Pedroia, Buchholz, Porcello, Uehara, Tazawa, Ramirez can be this bad. Any of those guys can be a legit All-Star any given year and they've all underperformed (sans Pedroia) and it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me except to file it under "weird things happen".

I think E-Rod is a wildly different pitcher from A-Alv.

Based on the box score, this was a fun game to not see.
Is it a flaw or a feature of baseball that a team can seemingly suck this hard and be three games from being in first place? I mean, they could hit three fluke doubles over the next week and be in first place.

Javier Guerra is damn. Numbers being held up by a crazy .423 BABIP, but his power is up, his walk-rate is up and reports of his defense are strong. Sounds like a top-5 prospect this time next year. Quite a logjam at 2B/SS with Moncada and Dubon.
P.S. Is Travis Shaw adjusting or just progressing to the mean? Now 7-for-last-14 with 2 K, 1 2B.

I like Castillo but Victorino hasn't been terrible lately somehow. Victorino has a 104 wRC+ on the season and Steamer projects Castillo to hit to a ... 104 wRC+ the rest of the season. Both players seem super frail and injury prone so not really expecting a huge jump here.

He must be drinking the same tap water as Allen Craig, Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Travis Shaw, Daniel Nava and the right half of Pablo Sandoval.
Although it looks like Victorino might have recently switched to bottled.

I'm as much of a baseball fan as any. As much of a Red Sox fan as any. It's just damn hard to stomach this collection of mediocrities and down right stiffs that we call a pitching staff. Just no past, no present, no future with these guys . Wright in for Masterson, really ? Whoopee!! The top of the pitching staff should be Lester, Lackey, Porcello. That's the Boston Red Sox, not the crap I see now. Bring in Lester and Lackey, remove Hanley, Sandoval and Castillo.

This A's lineup is going to break Masterson in half. Hope Steven Wright is ready to go 5 in relief.

Farrell is just doing his part to ensure Victorino gets his career OPS+ below 100. Another hundred at bats should do it.

is it bad that in my initial glance at the thread title I thought it said, "Shane Victorino Arrested" and was happy about it? Same glance and same initial feeling. Oh well, can't win them all.

It seemed like a swell idea to get him and see if he could be a useful player again, but 162 plate appearances and a .430 OPS later and I think we can say he's finished. Four consecutive years with a worse OPS than the previous year—I'd be really impressed if he could make it five.
DFA Victorino, bring up Castillo, send Masterson to pen, trade for Jeff Samardzija.

Mookie heating up and once they dump Masterson or use him as a ROOGY (actually hope this isn't a thing) out of the pen, this is a pretty exciting team. I can't fathom how Masterson was ever any good when it's so obvious to just stack lefties against him. He's up next against Oakland, who can stack Vogt, Davis, Sogard, Fuld, Reddick, Zobrist, and Burns into the lineup without much issue. He's got not shot.

Ryan Hannable ?@ryanhannable 39m39 minutes ago Farrell indicated he's maybe done more 1-on-1 work with the pitchers than he's done in the past given the early season struggles. In response to or as a cause of the struggles?

Nice win. On pace for 88 wins with the whole starting staff pitching below their proven track records. I'll take it.

Looked it up for the 1997 expansion draft and wikipedia says: Be interesting to see which 15 players the Red Sox would protect. And then which players they would protect after each round. So an expansion draft for for the 2016 season would take place in November 2015 and would autoprotect players drafted in 2014 and this June and players 18 or younger when signed in 2013, based on above rules. Betts Bogaerts Ramirez Swihart Owens Margot Rodriguez Moncada Johnson Kelly Miley Porcello Vazquez Castillo Pedroia Dunno if that is too youth-heavy. Sandoval would prob get selected but I'm fine with that. Nava, Holt, Buchholz probably. God I'm just imagining the frenzy of hot takes we'd have to endure if they left Ortiz off of the protected list. Looking at the 1997 draft it's amazing how poorly both teams ended up doing. Whoever would end up running these two new hypothetical teams would undoubtedly be way, way smarter and have access to so much more (relevant) information than the Rays and Dbacks did, an expansion draft in this era would be much more fascinating. True, my thinking was Ortiz would retire if selected or just wouldn't report, or a team that was about to win 60 games wouldn't select a 40 year old DH. So why waste a protection.
