Better than Varitek as a projection? Are you serious? I mean, I think Varitek is the most overrated player to come through Boston since Jim Rice retired but at his peak he was pretty damn good. If we're projecting Swihart to 120 OPS+ as a catcher in his peak, sign me up.

Rubby must be coming up on an innings limit in the next 20-30 innings at most. So 4ish more starts. He could make a fine 3rd starter next year, just have to find two to put ahead of him.

OK, if that's their interpretation of blind, sure. To me, it implies the highest bidder wins, which isn't necessarily the case here.

It's not a blind bidding process, though. He's free to negotiate with any team.

Ortiz missed two or three cookies in that last AB that he would have hit to DisneyLand in prior years.if he is struggling as bad next year you know he will start complaining to the media how he deserves his 2016 option to be picked up. This team is nothing without Big Papi. Truth. Imagine how bad they'd be without him this year. Oh wait.

They weren't meaningless, obviously, but Buchholz only made 3 starts when they brought him up in 2007. In that case they were looking to see if they could put him on the playoff roster. He came down with a sore arm so they shut him down. This only becomes an issue with the new rules as under the old rules, a player would be rule five eligible anyways. Owens is the first player that I can remember that doesn't have to be protected but might boost. September interest in a losing team. The team brought up Betts during a lost season and blew a 40 man spot on him even though he barely played. Good chance that the PR department makes them do that again. When they called up Betts, they had the worst OF in baseball and the season wasn't totally lost yet; I think a totally reasonable and winning-oriented move. They called up Betts presumably with the idea he was one of the three best OF in the organization while still teetering on the edge of possible contention.

Have the Red Sox ever added a real prospect to the 40-man for the sole purpose of a meaningless September start or two? Genuinely asking.

I know it's abitrary, but since it's just for discussion and nothing else, here's his stats from when we saw significant improvement from Bell and before. Last 7 starts: 36 IP, 24 H, 19 R, 12 ER, 14 BB, 25 K Prior 9 starts: 43.1 IP, 71 H, 39 R, 35 ER, 17 BB, 29 K Obviously far from perfect, but it is still a step forward and an important one at that. Has Ball really improved, though? Seems like mostly just a function of BABIP-luck. His K-rate and BB-rate haven't improved at all really, it's just the number of hits that have fallen recently. Manny Margot is having a great season, and coming on strong lately. .270/.341/.421 with a strong .778 BB/K rate. Solid power, lots of steals, good plate discipline. Looks like he sprays hits to all fields, too. I'm excited. On pace for about 15 HR and 60 SB with a seemingly good approach at the plate as a 19 year old in the Sally league. Any chance we'll see Owens in Fenway this season? I really doubt it; too many guys who are already on the 40-man roster who need to be evaluated.

How can you learn to hit major league pitchers in Pawtucket? Do you send them down til 9/1 and then bring them up after they accumulate 100 plate appearances in AAA?

Great news, Congrats to Blake. Is their anyway Blake can be a first baseman and become Napoli's replacement? Right after Marrero moves to LF.

I'd be fine with it, but there would have to be some serious trades between now and opening day. Betts/Nava/Bradley/Castillo/Cespedes/Craig/Victorino is a pretty crowded OF with no consensus as to who will actually end up with playing time. And that's without Hassan/Brentz/Cecchini/Coyle/etc. making a push mid-season. So if they think Castillo can be a 2-win player or so it's worth it since it's just money, but there have to be 3 outfielders shipped out before April 1st.

Remember when Abreu had bat speed problems? Gotta love the scouts... The divide of opinion on Abreu laid bare the flawed reasoning of sabermetric wonks. Folks who need numbers to assess a player's talent had a collective meltdown at the thought of signing a player based on seeing that player at one or two workouts. Once Abreu signed for a boatload of money, these folks starting saying that it was an overpay, that the White Sox would be saddled with an albatross contract. Once Abreu started producing, these folks started saying the numbers were illusory, the product of a small sample size. The scouts got this one right, while the wonks failed. It's been a pleasure to watch this guy perform and actually get better as the season has progressed. He absolutely trashed opposing pitchers in July. By the end of the season, even those in denial will be hard pressed not to recognize Abreu as one of the three best hitters in the American League. I thought davenport translations projected him to hit like Miguel Cabrera this year.

What kind of left handed power bat? Like Brandon Moss, Anthony Rizzo, Adrian Gonzalez or Pedro Alvarez? Good luck getting any of those guys.
But for real, why the desire for left handed power bat? Between Cespedes, Ortiz, Napoli, Middlebrooks, Craig and Bogaerts there is a lot of potential power in this lineup. Every one of those guys has the potential for a .200 ISO, which I would consider 'power-bat' level. Now, Middlebrooks could suck, Craig could suck and Bogaerts might not reach that power either, but Cespedes, Ortiz and Napoli have a ton of power and odds are that at least one of the Middlebrooks/Craig/Bogaerts trio will provide plenty of power.

Why does everyone want to add Blake Swihart to the 40 man roster before you need to? Add him over the winter when you need to and don't waste an option year for no reason.

Who gets to be the annual reclamation project they take on for 2015? Who they keep for half a year, then release only to see him play much better after leaving. I'm putting money on Josh Johnson. 1 year, 14 million in potential dollars.
EDIT: Nevermind, Padres have a 4 million dollar option they can pick up for 2015.

He's definitely declining, but his defense is still stellar and he will continue to be a 3-4+ win player for the next few years at least, but he wouldn't be the first elite second baseman to fall off a cliff at 31-33. As long as he avoids the Marcus Giles aging curve, he should still be worth his contract more or less. Trading him would be a nightmare. I'd like it in a universe where emotions don't matter and future free agent signings aren't altered by your trading away a guy who took less than market-rate to stay, because damn Mookie Betts would look nice at second next year.

Is Britton injured? Anyone seen him and what his velocity is like? He's thrown almost 500 innings since his tommy john surgery in 2008. Just throwing wild speculation out there; had surgery in October 2008 and was pitching in live games August 2009. Ten months.

He needs to play or be traded for Stanton or someone like Stanton. No platooning, no AAA. 155 games of Mookie or use him to trade for Stanton/Tulowitzki/Puig/Donaldson.
This team is going to be so stacked next year, I can feel it in my pelvis.

Your up the middle players are suppose to be your best players. All things in moderation my brothers. Have you seen the cast if characters that have roamed our outfield this year, and zippo power in the organization outside of Ortiz and Napoli. All things in moderation! And Xander. And Cespedes. And Middlebrooks. But I guess they won't get much power out of CF, C or 2B next year. The up-the-middle positions, oddly enough.
