JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 1h1 hour ago Criticism of Bryce Harper today reminds me of what you read in Ted Williams' biographies. Criticized when he was best player in the league. I was thinking of Manny. And Pedro. And Ortiz.

I am not a believer in his gargantuan month. I would sell "high" on him this offseason. In large measure that is due to the fact that we have Betts in center, and depth in the minors (Margot/Benintendi). Obviously this is not based on extensive scouting of his swing, etc. I just am not a believer in a player who struggles for such a lengthy time suddenly finding a fix. His recent struggles "confirm" (sarcasm intended) my hunch.

Mobile phone post, so please excuse lack of research. Mets traded Kazmit due to mechanics and I thought it wS Bannister who was behind that. Same guy?

He and Rei were batting 8th and 9th for Lowell, batting .175 and .173, respectively. Slow first seasons for both - though Rei was returnig from injury. I believe the expectations for Matheny were not all that glowing for upside.

Really nice game for Swihart. I'm really impressed with him. He's got a pretty good line for a catcher, especially one who was brought up early. Yesterday on YES I beliee they said he is the best hitting catcher in MLB (AL?) since all star game.

Just a reminder of how far away the GCL is. Here are the top 10 lists I could locate. Occasionally the top guy, Ramirez, Kershaw, Sano, actually becomes a very good MLBer. Most, even the top 1 or 2, never even make it to the upper levels.
2002 1. *Hanley Ramirez, ss, Red Sox 2. Rudy Guillen, of, Yankees. 3. *Merkin Valdez, rhp, Braves. 4. *Leo Nunez, rhp, Pirates. 5. Jose Diaz, rhp, Dodgers. 6. *Elizardo Ramirez, rhp, Phillies. 7. 2006 1. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Dodgers 2. Chris Parmelee, of/1b, Twins 3. Gorkys Hernandez, of, Tigers 4. Chris Marrero, of, Nationals 5. Jason Place, of, Red Sox 6. Dellin Betances, rhp, Yankees 7. 2007 1. Michael Burgess, of, Nationals 2. Jesus Montero, c, Yankees 3. Ben Revere, of, Twins 4. Che-Hsuan Lin, of, Red Sox 5. John Tolisano, 2b, Blue Jays 6. Pedro Baez, 3b, Dodgers 7. Jared Porter gone to the Cubs. Hate to say I told you so... “@pgammo: Pro scouting director Jared Porter, responsible for Eduardo Rodriguez, to the Cubs may be the beginning of the flight from the Red Sox.” “@timbritton: LRT: Dombrowski mentioned one executive had received a promotion from another organization. Now we know it’s Jared Porter to the Cubs.” “@timbritton: Dombrowski also said that move ”was in place before I even started.“” How was the pro scouting director responsible for scouting a minor leaguer? Or is that his new position with cubs?

Moncada with a dinger and two walks. Up to .295 in a charge to get to .300

So, a full year, about 18 starts, and not a single win as a starter. We really need to reevaluate our international spending.

Stats never give the global answer to a question. Pieces of analysis go into that. For example, sign Panda breaks down into multiple components. Do fat guys Age well, what is decline of generic 28 year olds, how do you measure past offense most effectively, past defense value. Does performance in big games suggest any addional value for Boston. What are the substitutes
Throw in more for Hanley an his move to of and none if this gives a firm yes no value
Same for Porcello, where ground balls require an adjustment for the Boston infield.
An exec who doesn't take that into account would be incompetent. But weighing some of those questions, like Porcello being young and in theory getting peak value, and benefitting from infield defense (which theory and weight seem to have been at play in Miley and Masterson) shows that stats and assumptions can be fatal if you place false comfort in objective stats in which components are flawed. (Not to digress, but my biggest complaint about WAR and FIp and eRA is that they take fairly accepted concepts, and then dilutes them with much weaker theories -defense and running- to create a number that a lot of people throw around as immutable.).

Hamilton cannot beat Shaq's 37/39 record, but his 18 for 22 bears watching.

There may just be another surgeon or two willing to take his place. More to the point, does he have a deep bullpen? I'll bet there are few guys watching his performance over his shoulder. There is another surgeon in Birmingham. He was with the lemak group last I saw. his name is Ortega. Supposed to be an elbow savant. Over on Sons of Frank Jobe they have him at #11 Apparently the 2016 orthopedic crop is very top heavy.

Seriously, who had Guerra with one fewer homer than Devers and Moncada combined?

Nightengale says no Sox moves. Oh well, there always the year after next year. Sounds like Chiarelli and his clipped authority at the deadline. Perhaps John Henry remembered last trade deadline.
