Interesting little media quote by Bard to MLB.com: Seems to me he is grasping at straws. He needs to accept that his performance in September of 11 had nothing to do with his switching to starting as it hadn't happened yet. He velocity was down back then and his control had slipped also. He still doesn't have the bullpen velocity back even now and needs to acknowledge he has to change his style as he seems to be going forward without the velocity that kept him a force in the sox pen. Another thing that seems odd is his under pressure stats, when actually closing, as they were also suspect as it never did really show up back then. He struggled then (closing) and again later when he started it showed again and his walks skyrocketed.

Oh no question, completely ahead of ourselves. But it's a fun question to dream on. Zobrist has been one of my favorite players for a long time precisely because of how valuable his flexibility his. The ability to provide above-average offense and defense from essentially any position besides catcher and pitcher is something I've always wanted. I'd love to see Betts get some reps at as many positions as possible just to see if he could become that kind of player. It's working out swimmingly for Profar...
Also, it's really hard to be a super-utility guy when you're a second baseman. Second basemen can't play shortstop almost by definition (or they'd be shortstops), they probably don't have the arm for third or right, probably don't have the footspeed for center... and really there's not all that much utility in a 2B/LF. Zobrist is kind of awesome but that skillset is very, very rare. But how many 5-8 possibly 5-9" outfielders are there in Left or even center? Heck when he jumps he might not be able to hit the white line on the scoreboard wall even???

He probably signs with the Rays and become good again. Right I'm sure the rays are going to arbitration with him and offer him 1.5 million plus the 250,000 to end this year.

LOL yea Griffey must of been cheating back then too, after all he broke down first! The whole idea that Griffey is somehow on par with Bonds is ridiculous. You have to invent completely different careers for each of them. I mean since when do we give players credit for being injured the last ten years of their careers? It's like saying Nomar is on par with Jeter if you ignore the fact that Nomar got hurt and retired ten years before Jeter broke down. Well, sorry, players don't get credit for the careers that we imagine they might have had, they get credit for the careers they actually had. Rotflmao, you do realize I was just poking fun at the whole debate right? ?? Geez what is the purpose of the italics anymore... lol

Well, how about this. In his career, Ken Griffey Jr. accumulated 83.7 rWAR (baseball-reference). From 1986-1999 Barry Bonds gained 103.5 rWAR. Do you think he was cheating during the 1990's, too? uhhh, yeah? LOL yea Griffey must of been cheating back then too, after all he broke down first!

How is he gonna show he can outhit someone else in the lineup if he doesn't get the chance? Probably he should get to the same way Jake did when he was a rookie. Prove it and move over Coco! With a little more up and down seasoning I would think.

If you sign Ellsbury to a 5 year extension/contract (he'll get more in free agency most probably) you know he'll miss at least two of those years and 1 will be him trying to get back in shape. Yikes and if they keep JBJr he will have Tj surgery after his one good year and than suck for the rest of his career too! Guess you should start now blaming Xander for it cuz he will most likely run into JBJ thereby ruining all his great years that coulda shoulda been!

Every time a player gets caught by testing it's held up as evidence that testing is working (as well as, illogically, the opposite). But based on the list of players in the Biogenesis case, isn't that evidence that testing catches some of the cheaters, some of the time? Are the players caught by testing just the ones that didn't cheat intelligently enough - failing the Manny Ramirez test, shall we say? Yeah, I can't really get worked up about it, considering we'll never know for sure who used and how much, and who was really clean. I feel no one should get worked up about it for those that used before 2002... baseball didn't make it illegal til then anyway ... like Johnny Damon said greenies, cross tops, and black beauties were readily available in bowls in every clubhouse. Management as well as players all knew and made it a part of the game. After the new rules and testing then the penalties should be started heavily. But the condemning of all the stars {pre 2003} and such is really all wrong as owners, managers, agents, lawyers, writers, and clubhouse attendants were all involved.

Remember - the first and most important questions the Red Sox need to ask is: "If we offer player X a qualifying offer, will he accept it?" If the answer is "No", then you offer the QO. Period. Team context, value, and fit don't matter. If the answer is "Yes" or "Maybe" then there are other things to consider. But if the player isn't going to accept it - which I think is the case with Drew at least - then it doesn't really matter. didn't the Yankees offer him more money to play 3rd this year than we did but he wanted to play as the starting shortstop? I seem to remember him saying that in an article anyway.

Steamer! Does anyone know why he had that nickname? Actually I just found out from Bob out of this interview: RSN: How did you get your nickname, “Steamer”? BS: I guess it came from the steam engine, you know, Stanley Steamer. I steamed them down once in awhile. www.redsoxnation.net/index.php?showtopic=16569

Steamer! Does anyone know why he had that nickname? Stanley Steamer is a carpet cleaning company. His name is Stanley. Hence, Steamer. The Stanley Steamer was a car company actually. They were around with their steam engine from 1902 - 24 or there abouts.

I'm a little concerned to see JBJ on the DL for the right elbow again. Hope there isn't something worse going on in there than inflammation. Now that everyone seems to want to dump Ells they can all go to worrying about "what ifs" for next couple of years!!! Come on guys give Boras his 90 million and keep Ells for protection of JBJ's pending DL stints for 2+ years!!!

NESN really started to go downhill once they hired Hazel Mae. They went from likeable guys that had a basic understanding of the stuff to boneheaded girls who know nothing and Don and Jerry's bad jokes. C'mon, do we really need an extremely educated sideline reporter? I mean, most people aren't even concentrating on what Mae/Dell say...Right on, didn't everybody here dream about what it would be like to be shacked up for the night with Heidi? I mean why else would Nesn and the Lakers want this gal for but for eye candy!

It would be nice to get used to pitching in relief, as it appeared that would be his role. But with Dempster's performance last night, maybe Workman will be starting in his place for a bit. Not sure if Dempster laid an egg or if his groin is bothering more than he's letting on. I'd guess the latter. As would I, and I would put him on the DL for some R&R and call Workman back up.This is what I would like to see too. If they get 15 days out of Dempster on the DL, 2-3 starts for Workman than if they give a start off to rest Lackey and Doubront September should be here and we can go with fresher starters into the final month push with if needed a untaxed or even a rested bullpen.

Game over. Jeez - I wouldve felt better with a DL Dempster and let Wright take a shot. Dempster is hurt. He's a liability right now. Thanks Guidas, we needed that win! Way to get it...

Cherington said the Sox are likely done. Thinks they'll handle 3B from within. That's good to hear. I don't think Young is an upgrade over what we could potentially put out there. Do you think we still try and add a RH RP? I think we just picked one up in Brandon Workman.

1. Tigers, great move, found a SS of the future at minimal cost or who could very well be Adam Everett at a guaranteed 2+Million a year contract . . . . . 2. Red Sox . . 3. White Sox There fixed it for ya

Actually, all it says to me is that the Sox need a utility infielder who can backup second and SS? After all Middlebrooks or Snyder isn't going to be effective there if someone gets hurt early in a game as neither one has a game there!

I have mixed feelings about this deal. I still think, despite his recent struggles, that Iglesias will wind up being a Gold Glove SS just about every year and he'll wind up being an OK hitter. I would think he'd ping the ball around enough to hit .270 with an OPS between .600 and .650. It's obvious to me that the one of the Tigers biggest weaknesses is defense and they're kind of doing what the Sox did in 2004 - they're shaking the glove tree to improve themselves and I suspect he'll make a big difference defensively for them. I think getting rid of Iggy was a good move at this time. He sure appears to be the second coming of Adam Everett to me. I also don't think that Pokey was the way to go in 04 as until they got Orlando Cabrera and his .294 .320 .465 .785 Boston Stats they were going to win the WS. Iggy isn't going to save Detroit but he will fit there better than Boston now.
