What's a reasonable timeline for Callahan's promotion to AAA? The issue has always been lack of control - home plate remains unchanged between levels

Why must people continue to argue by misrepresenting the facts. We have Pedroia on video clearly saying to Machado, "I would have hit you yesterday . . . You know that and I know that"

I can write this with extreme confidence (which hopefully will never be tested): if Dever's max HR in year remains at 11 - he'll never see the majors

This is the nature of deterrence - any "evidence" for its efficacy is inherently counterfactual, which you previously wrote you would reject. Not to mention the crystalline incompetence of the Red Sox' execution.
Re: the dirtiness of the slide; the point is that (some/many/most) of the Red Sox adjudged it . . . "inappropriate"; that is all that matters. It is purely in that context that you need to consider the question "What are we gonna do about it?"

Whatever you think of the fastball tit-for-tat, I hope that Pedroia has learned that importuning Machado and the Orioles isn't a strategy.

Remember what it was like just last year? Baseball is so much more fun when your team can score at will.

When the Red Sox want to hit someone, their pitcher subtracts 5mph, it ends up missing the batter around the head.
The Orioles, add 5mph, and nail their target in the hip.

Here are the catch probability data available through 29 April (it's not clear exactly the period covered however) It's a melange of players (Red Sox, AL East, the putative best and worst, et al); obviously caveats about SS apply (we're talking about 15-25 BIP) +/- is an aggregate (counting) state B(all)H(awk)A(bove)A(verage) is a rate stat Player | +/-

The assumption is that this year's team is a run-prevention powerhouse; obviously pitching is a large part of that - defense the other.
The left-side of the infield is a disaster, and it's not just 3B (although it's pretty clear that Sandoval is a 3B in name only); I don't see how the Red Sox can sign Bogaerts long-term with an expectation that he stays at SS (although Dombrowski has traded away the most likely internal replacements).
And Moreland so far looks like he was gifted the Derek Jeter Gold Glove at 1B (except Moreland couldn't have won it for his offense).
The Statcast catch probability data for 2017 is finally available, and I'll try to update my BHAA stats periodically throughout the season.
Defense is to baseball as comparative advantage is to economics - eyes and intuition are not to be trusted

Re: Ross - there is the no small matter of his diminished velocity - 2+ ticks on his 4-seamer and an alarming 4 on his cutter; the last time he had velo like this was 2014 when his ERA was 6+
He had better not be their 2nd-best reliever.
AFA Abad - ?

Chris Sale on a 4th-through-the-order penalty is better than every non-Kimbrel reliever on the roster though. FTFY
