i love waking up a Red Sox fan on Chris Sale day. This is always the best time of the week, even if it comes late every once and a while.

I agree that Sale should be pitching today and Fister is just the worst, but it's still a two run game with 7 innings of at bats left..

If Kahnle going forward is the same pitcher he has been in 2017, this is a very good trade for the Yankees.

Buttrey to Pawtucket is weird. - He was sent to Portland 2 days ago (although maybe that can be explained by the PawSox not having room for him then, but having room for him now) - The PawSox have Maddox, Scott, and Travis who have to report, so while they have 2 roster spots now, those are going to fill up fast. You also figure one or both of Velazquez and Johnson is going to come back down in the very near future. My guess is that either: (a) this is a paper move to make space on the Portland roster; or (b) the Red Sox know one or more PawSox are getting traded in the somewhat near future. (Less fun, but they might also just plan on cutting a player or two as well.) EDIT: Confirmed it's real. What is confirmed?

I wish Chris Sale could cut up the Red Sox uniforms in such a way that Betts couldn't physically bat lead off.

Saddest part of tonight is that sale didn't get the win.

I'd really love to see Pedroia do the exact same thing on a dp ball here.

So at this point does it matter if game under protest? If sox lose game (or win) do they come back to this point if league agrees?

Idk the rule on this, but if Holliday wasn't being weird that's a double play.

Really thought Lin gapped that one. Benintendi should have been on third in which case it wouldn't have mattered, but yea on tv it looked like a double off the bat.

I've proposed trades for Nunez in the past, I think he is a good target.

-My hot take is that Victor Robles will be the universal #1 by the end of the year, whether Moncada graduates or not. (If Moncada doesn't graduate it probably also means something went wrong, but that's another discussion). He's an absolute monster. It's pronounced Rafael Devers.

I'd give him the Craig treatment, outright him to AAA and let him earn his salary there. Not much point in saving $1M in a trade or releasing him.

Hitting the ball softly high in the air has not gone well for the Red Sox so far but they are determined to make it work

Any way Colin Moran would be available? MLB.com has him as the Astro's #23 prospect so the price could be reasonable. I think he could a better 3rd base option than we have at the ML level. Some upside with the bat.

If I were a pitcher facing the Sox, I would just throw sliders low and outside. Could end up breaking the record for strikeouts. There is a lot of truth to this statement. If an umpire calls one low and outside slider a strike in the first inning, then look out, because all our hitters heads are messed up and they have just mentally expanded the strike zone to biblical porportions. This is another reason why I think we need a veteran professional hitter on this team. We need a guy that help these hitters realize what opposing pitchers are doing to them. Ps: if Hanley is hurt, put him on the dl and let him get better. Because the wounded warrior is not helping the team. I doubt he is hitting over 200 these last 10 games or so. That's what a hitting coach is for, and we have one of those. Everyday these guys are being presented much richer data than we have, they watch lots of video, have team meetings, and get in depth scouting reports. It's difficult to hit a slider low and away. And for what it's worth the Red Sox as a team have the second lowest strikeout rate in the MLB. I for one don't think the hitters are criminally under performing. There's plenty of room for improvement, but of the 8 hitters with the most PA's the lowest wRC+ is 92. Hanley, Pedroia, and probably Betts should be hitting better, but tit's not like hey are not lost at the plate. All we need is someone who can baseball at third base.

Why is it a dumb rule? If you don't sign a pick, why should you still get the bonus money associated with that slot? Also, the reason you sign Netzer is that you thought he was good enough to draft in the third round. You only get so many draft picks. You need to sign the good ones. Maybe it's already been discussed here, but I just don't think the team should get penalized for a decision they have only so much control over.
You do run into situations like in the old system where teams are picking less talented kids in rounds 1-10 and not signing them and then turning around in later rounds and paying more talented kids with huge college commitments to get to sign with a team. I can see both sides to the argument. No system is perfect. At least the international kids aren't making 30 million dollars more than the American kids because of where they were born. No need to fix a problem that doesn't exist, besides a few outliers everyone in the first 10 rounds signs. Changing this rule would give more leeway for teams to undercut draftees.

I hope the Red Sox get a cheap replacement level to average 3b and do nothing else major this deadline. I would try to target a guy who can at least hit RHP around league average and hopefully can play multiple positions. Haven't vetted this list yet just did some quick surfing, but here are some names I'd look into. Suarez, Flores, Nunez, Freese, Y. Escobar as some of the names I haven't heard mentioned.

Is average fastball height really a good metric to use for this analysis? Wouldn't a count or % of fastballs over some threshold be a much better indicator of usage of the high FB? Maybe Red Sox pitchers are using less low fastballs or more outside/inside pitches of average height, it's not really clear from this data.
