Could you cite the article? I'm having trouble accessing it via Globe archive. Could it be that he was referring to Zimmermann, who, most likely, will receive a QO? Or another potential FA TOTR guy to be QO'd, and lumped them in with Cueto and Price?

Farrell was not reticent in playing younger players. He had Panda and Hanley given to him in Cherington's belief that he had assembled a contending team. He was also, I believe, forced to play Victorino and Napoli to attempt to build up value for a midseason trade.
He played Mookie, Bogey and Vasquez last year and Middlebrooks before that. There is also the theory that you shouldn't rush rookies into everyday lineups so as not to destroy their confidence should they encounter adversity.
Swihart developed nicely though he was forced into the role as regular catcher because of injuries to Vasquez and Hanigan. Bradley was given ample opportunity to seize a regular OF position but blew it until late in this season. So I don't buy the notion that somehow JF shunted his younger players to lesser roles on the team or sent them back to the minors.

I include Swihart only in a trade for one of the top young starters, i.e. Gray, DeGrom, Cole, to name a few. Good young catchers are harder to find than TOTR starters, especially switch hitters batting .270, showing developing power and improving defense. Besides, we don't know yet how Vasquez will fare post surgery. Will he show the promise he displayed last season, or be stunted like Wieters?
Buchholz is likely to return and DD should try to sign Rich Hill. I'd make Miley expendable as it appears the starting staff is well armed with southpaws, including Brian Johnson.
And I, for one, am glad Cafardo is still around. I didn't like his campaign to recruit Hamels but he is a respected writer who is constantly with the club. As Yogi once said" "you can observe a lot by watching".

Bradford confirming Orsillo to SD. Announcement to be made today or tomorrow. Don to do some radio PBP as well as TV as Dick Enberg eases into retirement. Multi-year deal.

Picked up by Anaheim. Not eligible for post season, but could give it a one start boost.

He's come out of nowhere and shocked the world!! It' likely he gets another start, either the final game of the Yankee series, or in Cleveland next week. What happens if he puts in another performance like the three he's has so far as a starting pitcher.
Hill has a 1.17 era thus far averaging almost eight IP per start. His K numbers have been consistently high throughout his career.
On the down side he'll be 36 in ST. Does Dombrowski roll the dice in offering him a two year contract and hope that between him and Buchholz someone will emerge as an elite starter? Or combine to fill a top spot in the rotation? This way he can use his cache of prospects to assemble a solid bullpen.
A lot will depend on Hill's final appearance.

Gaslight District might be fun, but Orsillo, with small children and, as I understand recently divorced, will have other things on his mind.

One of these players is not like the others. If, by "homegrown", it is defined as a player who was drafted or was an International sign, Brock Holt, who was traded here in the Melanson deal, does not meet the criteria.
I'm going with Bogaerts, though Mookie deserves a lot of votes.

Noe Ramirez' changeup looked really good this outing. Something to build on for next season. Agree. He has impressed me with his control and ability to change speeds. Solid season in Pawtucket with a .232 era following up on a .214 era at Portland in 2014. A guy to keep an eye on in ST.

Nice outing by Strasburg last night, albeit vs the pathetic Phillies: 8IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 14Ks.

Add to that the fact that he hadn't played in a year before signing, and his admission that he's not yet 100%, more playing time at Caguas under Cora's tutelage is the right move for his development.

I'll reiterate: let's move on. Any further posts on this topic will be moved to the throwdown subforum. Thanks. Agree. Let's stick to the topic: "Where Do You Think Moncada Will Sign?" Can't believe over 50% still believe it's the Yankees.

l . Keep both until it is determined that Vasquez is healthy and able to handle the rigors of catching on a semi regular basis. See which one will emerge as No. 1. Wait for the offers to come in even if it takes a year, then pull the trigger on a trade for a SP. I wouldn't consider Swihart for 1B as he could develop into an elite catcher.

Some solace in the price for the acquisition of Saltalamacchia; Mendez back in the org., McGuiness never panned out in Texas, and Thomas out of baseball since2012.

The development of Betts in CF and Xander at SS make Margot, Marrero and Guerra available, and attractive in trade discussions. I would also add Brian Johnson who seems blocked at the ML level by Owens and Rodriguez as well a whomever DD acquires in the offseason. A package can be put together to include these prospects for a desired starter, though including Swihart would increase the return considerably.
If I were DD I'd see what a package w/o Blake can bring.

Montreal making a big pitch to rejoin MLB. Hope it's successful. The fan base is there. Nice rivalry for the Jays regardless of which league it's in.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, but our new GM is anything but dumb. Just look at the accolades attributed to him by other baseball people. And, one of his first moves was directing Lovullo to move Ramirez to 1B. This, after quickly observing his play in the outfield. Little to soon to be attaching unflattering descriptions to his surname.

Looking back on the poll, I notice that I didn't vote for Joe Kelly. There must be some mistake. Obviously he wasn't included in the original poll.

If Papi was 29 instead of 39, maybe. I'm sure most wouldn't have thought twice about trading Mookie in 2013 or Shaw and JBJ this year for a relief pitcher either. Papi is still hitting like he's 29 and I wouldn't trade Mookie for anyone ever. He's going to be the best hitter on this team after Ortiz retires. Xander says hello!

2007 world series championship. Without Beckett you don't get that ring. That beats out anything you just posted With Gray, you have no idea if they win a ring. Especially now when the league is so much more equal than it used to be and with an extra wild card spot. Nothing is guaranteed in today's baseball. A team may be built to win it all, but get knocked out in a one game wild card. But, if you don't take a chance to fill a need on the team by surrendering quality players, you're most likely destined to mediocrity.
